CAIR Director Nihad Awad: Texas terror designation ‘unconstitutional’

In an interview with our Arabic edition Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, Awad said: „We defeated him three times in court when he ignored the rights of Texas citizens in the right to boycott against Israel.

We believe this is retaliation against the institution, and US courts do not allow any official in power to take revenge on an institution or place that defeated them in the judiciary.“

Founded in 1994, CAIR is the largest civil-rights and Muslim advocacy organisation in the United States. Headquartered in Washington, DC, it operates more than 35 regional offices nationwide.

Rumors swirl of a plot to oust Keir Starmer as the embattled British leader denies attacking his rivals

Lawmakers are also perplexed by the timing of the briefing. After an unsteady first 16 months in office left Starmer one of the most unpopular British prime ministers on record, Labour MPs had previously signaled that the prime minister would not face a serious leadership contest until after local elections in May 2026, giving his government time to reverse its decline in the polls.

UN Failed Rwanda

(December 16, 1999)

In a statement, Annan acknowledged the systematic failure of the United Nations and expressed his „deep remorse“ on behalf of the organization. Annan, who was head of UN peacekeeping operations during the genocide, commissioned the report to find out the truth about the UN role in the massacre and to learn from the mistakes. He appointed a three-man team to conduct the 6-month-long analysis, and turned over UN files, cables and archives as well as UN personnel for testimony.
(…)
The report faulted the United Nations in several key areas leading up to that date, including its failure to act on a now-famous cable sent by the force commander, Canadian Lt. Gen. Romeo Dallaire on Jan. 11, 1994 warning of the risk of genocide. The cable was received by Annan and wasn‘t shared with the Security Council and didn‘t receive the follow-up such an important piece of evidence deserved, the report said. In addition, the United Nations and Security Council virtually ignored a groundbreaking assessment by the UN human rights investigator for Rwanda who raised the possibility in August 1993 that a genocide might occur.

But the report points most of its criticism at how the United Nations – and in particular its Security Council members – reacted to the killings once they started. There was little political will within the council, particularly from the United States, to authorize a robust peacekeeping force in the months after the failed Somalia mission, that left 18 Americans dead. After rampaging killers in Rwanda killed 10 Belgian peacekeepers at the beginning of the genocide, there was little will to keep the peacekeepers in place, much less strengthen their mandate.

The departure of peacekeepers from a school where thousands of civilians had massed hoping for protection was cited by the report as one of the main reasons for the enduring bitterness Rwandans feel Thursday toward the United Nations because of the ensuing massacre there. „The manner in which the troops left, including attempts to pretend to the refugees that they were not in fact leaving, was disgraceful,“ the report said.

UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell’s remarks on the humanitarian situation for children in Gaza at the UN Security Council meeting

NEW YORK, 16 July 2025 – „Excellencies, good afternoon. Thank you to Pakistan, as president of the Council, and to Member States for bringing us together this afternoon. Thank you for inviting UNICEF to share our firsthand perspective on this desperate situation for Gaza’s 1 million children.

„From the beginning of the present conflict, children – Palestinian and Israeli – have suffered terribly. Children have been killed, traumatized, and taken hostage. Children have been orphaned and injured. Children are hungry and lack clean water. Children are out of school, and the safety of their homes is a distant memory.

„Children are not political actors. They do not start conflicts, and they are powerless to stop them. But they suffer greatly, and they wonder why the world has failed them. And make no mistake, we have failed them.

„Over the past 21 months of war, more than 17,000 children have reportedly been killed and 33,000 injured in Gaza. An average of 28 children have been killed each day – the equivalent of an entire classroom. Consider that for a moment. A whole classroom of children killed, every day for nearly two years.

„These children are not combatants. They are being killed and maimed as they line up for lifesaving food and medicine.

Before Butler shooting, Secret Service denied multiple requests to bolster Trump‘s security detail during his 2024 campaign, report says

„This report reveals a disturbing pattern of communication failures and negligence that culminated in a preventable tragedy,“ Paul, who chairs the Senate Homeland Security Committee, wrote in the report. „What happened was inexcusable and the consequences imposed for the failures so far do not reflect the severity of the situation.“

The report accuses then-Secret Service director Kimberly Cheatle of „falsely“ testifying to Congress that „no USSS asset requests were denied for the Butler rally.“ Cheatle resigned nearly a year ago after testifying before Congress.

Cardiologist‘s killing will have ‚devastating impact‘ on healthcare in Gaza, says medical organisation

Sultan was one of only two cardiologists left in the Gaza Strip, and the director of the Indonesian hospital in north Gaza. He was killed in an Israeli air strike on his apartment on Wednesday, along with his wife and at least three of his children.

Paying homage to the renowned cardiologist, Alser told The Guardian: “The killing of Dr Marwan al-Sultan by the Israeli military is a catastrophic loss to Gaza and the entire medical community, and will have a devastating impact on Gaza’s healthcare system.

“This is part of a much longer and systematic atrocious targeting of healthcare workers sanctioned by impunity.

„This is a tragic loss of life, but also an obliteration of their decades of lifesaving medical expertise and care at a time when the situation facing Palestinian civilians is unfathomably catastrophic,” Alser added.

Director of north Gaza hospital killed alongside his family in Israeli strike on apartment

The director of one of north Gaza‘s largest hospitals was killed, along with his wife, daughter and sister, in an Israeli strike on their apartment, medical officials said Wednesday.

Dr. Marwan Al-Sultan was the director of the Indonesian Hospital — the largest medical facility north of Gaza City and a critical lifeline for civilians in the area since the start of the nearly 21-month-long war in the territory.

Diaa Al-Najjar, Al-Sultan‘s nephew, said his uncle never stopped working amid the war, even for a moment.

„He kept resisting. Until the last second, the last moment,“ Al-Najjar told CBC News in Gaza City. „May God grant us patience and may God have mercy on our martyrs.“

‚This Is What Fascism Looks Like‘: Beloved Labor Leader David Huerta Arrested

In a later update, the union said Huertas—a veteran labor leader whose union represents over 45,000 janitors, airport workers, security guards, and other property service workers—had been released from the hospital where he received treatment for injuries sustained during his arrest, but that he remained in custody.

The union included remarks from Huertas, who said, „We all collectively have to object to this madness because this is not justice. This is injustice.“

„This is about something much bigger“ than his own arrest, said Huertas. „This is about how we as a community stand together and resist the injustice.“

NYU Imposes One-Year Suspensions on 11 Students for Protesting Gaza Genocide

On Dec. 11, over a dozen NYU students and faculty dropped flyers and hung banners throughout the Bobst Library while 13 people sat in on the administrative floor of thelibrary. The actionists were demanding a meeting with administrators, who had, in the spring during the Gaza solidarity encampment movement at NYU, promised students to disclose the university’s endowment, including all its investments in weapons manufacturers and ties to Israel and companies that profit off its occupation of Palestine.

The direct action was organized by student group Shut It Down NYU, which challenges what it sees as NYU’s ties to imperialism. Not only were the students’ demands ignored, but yesterday, 11 of them were suspended for a year on the pretext of participating “in coordinated and collective disruptive action” — the non-violent action at the library. Several more NYU students are currently going through disciplinary proceedings that could result in similar punishments.
