After Blocking Fuel, the US Turns to Cuba’s Food Supply

In July, the US State Department announced a round of broad economic sanctions against Cuba targeting industries that have historically been spared, limiting the Cuban government’s ability to purchase agricultural commodities and food processing equipment from third countries by singling out Cuba’s state importer (GECOMEX) and port operator (GEMAR).

This is happening in the context of America’s monthslong oil blockade against Cuba, which has already immiserated the general population by impeding basic sanitation and food safety and has killed scores of patients in Cuban hospitals. A US congressional delegation that visited in early July described the situation on the ground as a “silent Gaza.”

Army: Israeli forces continue attacks, violations of ceasefire understandings & international law

NNA – Lebanese Army Command said that Israeli forces continue to carry out attacks and violate existing ceasefire understandings and international law through the systematic destruction of homes, shelling, machine-gun fire, land bulldozing, and the burning of olive groves and agricultural land across several areas in southern Lebanon.

In an issued statement by the Army‘s Orientation Directorate on Sunday, it indicated that the Israeli forces have demolished a water facility belonging to the Litani River Authority in Markaba and opened fire near army positions in Kfartebnit, Nabatieh al-Fawqa, and Zawtar al-Gharbiyeh, disrupting its operations.

In Iraqi Desert, Two Israeli Outposts Were Kept Secret for Months

The presence of an Israeli outpost in Iraq was previously reported by The Wall Street Journal. Iraqi officials told The Times there was another undisclosed second base also in Iraq’s western desert.

The base Mr. al-Shammari came across predated the current war between the United States, Israel and Iran, the regional security officials said, and was used during the 12-day war against Tehran in June 2025.

Israeli forces began preparing to build the makeshift base as far back as late 2024, one of the regional officials said — identifying remote sites from which to operate in future conflicts.

Iraqi farmer killed to hide evidence of two Israeli bases in country: Report

The presence of two secret Israeli bases in Iraq may have led to the death of a shepherd who discovered them, according to an investigation by The New York Times (NYT).

The Wall Street Journal reported last week that Israel set up a covert outpost in Iraq’s western desert during the conflict with Iran. The site was reportedly used to support air operations and housed special forces units.

Israel uproots thousands of grapevines in Hebron to expand settler road

Zuhur Tarwa stood in shock as Israeli army markers appeared across her vineyard, declaring it confiscated.

The 68-year-old Palestinian had spent years tending the land with her two daughters in the fertile Baqa’a Valley, east of Hebron in the occupied West Bank.

Their 200 grapevines once filled the plot with broad green leaves, promising a strong harvest.

Before that could happen, the confiscation order arrived – followed soon after by bulldozers.

“They razed the entire land, uprooting the grapevines and other crops,” Tarwa told Middle East Eye.

USDA to develop ‘One Farmer, One File’ with Palantir

(March 2

Government websites in December reported a Palantir contract with USDA.

Palantir has said it can revolutionize government computer systems, but concerns have also been raised that its system can be used for government surveillance.

Farmers have long been concerned about the privacy of their information, particularly with private companies.

U.S. Waives Shipping Regulation to Ease Fuel, Fertilizer Deliveries

The waiver, a rare exception to the century-old law, underscores the administration’s urgent response to a crisis that has sent gasoline prices sharply higher and disrupted critical fertilizer supplies for U.S. farmers.

China restricts fertiliser exports, further crimping war-tightened supply

In mid-March, Beijing banned exports of nitrogen-potassium fertiliser blends and certain phosphate varieties, sources told Reuters.

The ban, which has not been formally unveiled, was reported earlier this week by Bloomberg News.

Added to existing bans and export quotas for urea, only a handful of fertilisers – notably ammonium sulphate – can be exported, five sources said. That would mean between half and three quarters of China‘s exports last year are restricted, potentially up to 40 million metric tons, according to a Reuters estimate.

The Other Global Crisis Stemming From the Strait of Hormuz’s Blockage

(March 12, 2026)

Deprived of their natural gas supplies from Qatar, fertilizer firms in India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan have had to shut down production. Egypt, another important producer, has lost its gas imports from Israel and must turn to the ever-pricier LNG market. The benchmark price of urea, the most widely traded fertilizer, is up about 30 percent in the last month.

The damage extends beyond nitrogen to another key crop nutrient, phosphorus. Gulf countries produce around 20 percent of phosphate fertilizers, and as well as a quarter of global sulfur, which is largely an oil and gas byproduct. Fertilizer producers need sulfur (sulfuric acid, to be precise) to turn phosphate rock into a liquid that plants can absorb.

Colonists set fire to dozens of dunums of land south of Nablus

NABLUS, July 1, 2025 (WAFA) – Israeli colonists on Tuesday set fire to dozens of dunums of land in the village of Duma south of Nablus, according to a local official.

Abdullah Ziyada, head of the village council, told WAFA that colonists from the illegal colony of Yitzhar set fire to agricultural fields stretching along the bypass road, destroying hundreds of olive trees.

Residents, assisted by Palestinian civil defense crews, rushed to the area to contain the flames; however, colonists and Israeli forces actively obstructed the firefighting efforts by preventing the teams from accessing the village’s nearby water well, located near the al-Murabba checkpoint, to refill their fire trucks.

Brownley, Carbajal Condemn Cruel and Reckless ICE Activities in Ventura County

“We have received disturbing reports of ICE enforcement actions in Ventura County, including in Oxnard, Port Hueneme, and Camarillo, where agents have reportedly stopped vehicles, loitered near schools, and attempted to enter agricultural properties and facilities in the Oxnard Plain. These actions are completely unjustified, deeply harmful, and raise serious questions about the agency’s tactics and its respect for due process.

“Let us be clear: these raids are not about public safety. They are about stoking fear. These are not criminals being targeted. They are hardworking people and families who are an essential part of Ventura County. Our local economy, like much of California’s and the country’s as a whole, depends on undocumented labor. These men and women are the backbone of our farms, our fields, our construction and service industries, and our communities.

“We are outraged by the cruelty and recklessness of this campaign. It is unconscionable. The Trump administration is deliberately inflicting harm on immigrant families and doing so without transparency, accountability, or even basic communication with Congress. Neither we nor our colleagues have received any notification or briefing from ICE about these activities. Our inquiries to the administration have gone unanswered. This total lack of transparency is unacceptable.

50 Jahre Nelkenrevolution in Portugal
