The meetings with Trump were expected to give both leaders a chance to push their agendas with the president at a time when U.S. policy towards Iran and the Russia-Ukraine war continues to be in flux.
The meeting comes as new polling shows that a growing share of the presidentâs base no longer believes the war is worth its economic costs. And Republicans are increasingly resigned to the fact that the war will likely still be hanging over voters in some form when they head to the polls in November.
Curt Mills, executive director of the American Conservative magazine, described the meeting as âDEFCON 1.â
The Senate rejected the latest attempt to rein in President Trump‘s war powers in Iran on Thursday, soon after the House adopted a separate measure rebuking the president amid escalations in the conflict in recent days.
In a 47 to 49 vote, one Republican â Susan Collins of Maine â joined Democrats in voting to advance the measure. Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania was the sole Democrat to oppose. Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Rand Paul of Kentucky, who have previously supported similar war powers efforts, did not vote.
Thursday‘s vote is largely symbolic, and the resolution will not go to Trumpâs desk for signature if the Senate chamber were also to pass it.
But Democrats‘ war powers effort underscores that the war in Iran is continuing to divide Republicans, several of whom have complained the White House has not given enough visibility to Congress about the militaryâs actions.
Just 34% of voters approve of Trump‘s handling of Iran, according to a Fox News poll released Wednesday.
The 214-208 vote requiring congressional approval for the war comes as the Senate is expected to consider a similar resolution later Thursday morning. Though the votes forced by Democrats are largely symbolic, they are meant as a strong signal to the Republican president that his support on Capitol Hill is chipping away as the war drags on and lawmakers in both parties have questioned his administrationâs endgame.
The war has had âno clear mission, no strategy, no end goal,â said Washington Rep. Pramila Jayapal, a Democrat who led the resolution on the House floor.

Later in the day, however, signs emerged that some of the Senate Republicans who had previously voted to constrain Mr. Trump‘s war powers were reconsidering.
Cassidy was briefed on Iran at the White House by Vice President JD Vance and special envoy Steve Witkoff, the senator confirmed on X, writing that the conversation „address[ed] many of my concerns.“ Cassidy voted against advancing the resolution Wednesday night.
And Paul voted present on Wednesday, despite voting in favor of the last several Iran war powers resolutions. He said on X his goal was to „give the President more space and leverage to negotiate a lasting peace.“

President Trump‘s meeting with Republican senators on Wednesday turned testy, and at one point, he sternly told Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy to sit down, after questions arose about the War Powers Resolution, according to sources directly familiar with the meeting.
GOP Sens. Rand Paul, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and Bill Cassidy joined Democrats in voting for the resolution, while Democratic Sen. John Fetterman voted against it. The final tally was 50-48. The absences of GOP Sens. Mitch McConnell and Dave McCormick, who have previously voted against advancing war powers resolutions, contributed to the measureâs adoption.
Wednesday‘s action defied President Donald Trump as a handful of Republicans joined with Democrats to end the three-month-long war. House Speaker Mike Johnson had tried to prevent an outcome that would show the mounting opposition to the war.

Democratic lawmakers are on the verge of passing a resolution to end President Trumpâs war with Iran â with some help from a steadily growing group of Republicans.
In the House and Senate, resolutions under the 1973 War Powers Act this past week saw more members of Trumpâs party crossing the aisle to vote in favor of the so-far failed measures, with others voicing their support for a future resolution.
According to Jabareen, âThe dissolution of the Joint List in 2021 was a severe mistake that cost the Arab public political power and influence. Today, everyone understands this.â He added that despite ideological gaps with Raâam, âThe price of running separately will be unbearableâa drop in voter turnout and the continuation of the far-right rule.â He also emphasized that intensive talks are underway to reach agreements: âWe are doing everything we can to bring hope back to our public.â
Representatives from Hadash and two Arab partiers, Balad, and Taâal held a joint meeting last night to accelerate the reunification of the Joint List and remove obstacles toward an agreement. The three parties emphasized their consensus on core political issues and highlighted the importance of ongoing political and parliamentary coordination after the elections.
In a joint statement, the parties declared: âWe would like Raâam to be a partner in the political agreement, but we are aware of the significant gaps between our positions regarding the character and path of the Joint List. The Senate on Tuesday agreed to take up a measure that would force President Trump to end the war in Iran or win authorization from Congress to continue it, after a handful of Republicans joined Democrats in pushing forward with a resolution the G.O.P. has managed to block for months.
Last month, the Hadash party announced that it would promote direct dialogue with other Arab parties to explore the revival of the Joint List, which at its peak in 2015 and 2020 became the third-largest bloc in the Knesset and briefly held kingmaker influence.
The Hadash source said that several discussions have since taken place but that Mondayâs was the first to be publicized, signaling âmomentum.â
The bloc split due to internal fighting in 2021 when Mansour Abbasâs Islamist United Arab List (Raâam) broke away and it collapsed the following year ahead of the 2022 election.
