Former head of Saudi Arabia‘s General Intelligence Presidency and former Saudi ambassador to the US Turki al-Faisal condemned both Hamas and Israel in a speech on Tuesday, saying Hamas committed acts forbidden by Islam and Israel was ‚indiscriminately‘ bombing civilians in Gaza.
„There are no heroes in this conflict, only victims,“ said Faisal in a speech at a conference hosted by Rice University‘s Baker Institute for Public Policy.

The president who dramatically expanded the CIA secret drone war, ordered a troop surge in Afghanistan and aggressively prosecuted leakers made a forceful defense of his actions and an even more forceful case for winding down the war on terrorism.
The key line: „This war, like all wars, must end. That‘s what history advises. That‘s what our democracy demands.“
Harris maintained the same stance she has previously shared regarding the war in Gaza: She condemned Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack while expressing support for a cease-fire and a two-state solution.
“Israel has a right to defend itself,” Harris said. “It is also true far too many innocent Palestinians have been killed—children, mothers. What we know is that this war must end.”
When asked about the war in Gaza, both candidates reached for their usual talking points.
Harris said she backs a ceasefire deal in Gaza that would see the release of Israeli captives, but she renewed her pledge to continue to arm Israel. She also voiced support for the two-state solution. (…)
For his part, Trump reiterated his position that the war in the Middle East would not have broken out if he were in office. He also accused Harris of having a bias against Israel.

„Well, I will tell you, I agreed with President Biden‘s decision to pull out of Afghanistan.“ she said.
„Four presidents said they would and Joe Biden did.“
During the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, 13 U.S. service members were killed in a terrorist attack.
If Democrats were concerned about anything amounting to a repeat of Biden’s shoddy debate performance in late June, which led to his dropping out, it was quickly erased. Harris returned to the form that made her the runaway winner of the early 2020 Democratic primary debates.
More than that, though, with a premium on Trump defining the lesser-known Harris, she made sure the debate was overwhelmingly about Trump and his less-appealing traits.

Taking note of the resolutions of the Security Council and General Assembly, the Court is of the view that Member States are under an obligation not to recognize any changes in the physical character or demographic composition, institutional structure or status of the territory occupied by Israel on 5 June 1967, including East Jerusalem, except as agreed by the parties through negotiations and to distinguish in their dealings with Israel between the territory of the State of Israel and the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967. The Court considers that the duty of distinguishing dealings with Israel between its own territory and the Occupied Palestinian Territory encompasses, inter alia, the obligation to abstain from treaty relations with Israel in all cases in which it purports to act on behalf of the Occupied Palestinian Territory or a part thereof on matters concerning the Occupied Palestinian Territory or a part of its territory; to abstain from entering into economic or trade dealings with Israel concerning the Occupied Palestinian Territory or parts thereof which may entrench its unlawful presence in the territory; to abstain, in the establishment and maintenance of diplomatic missions in Israel, from any recognition of its illegal presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory; and to take steps to prevent trade or investment relations that assist in the maintenance of the illegal situation created by Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (see Legal Consequences for States of the Continued Presence of South Africa in Namibia (South West Africa) notwithstanding Security Council Resolution 276 (1970), Advisory Opinion, I.C.J. 281. Finally, the Court is of the view that the precise modalities to bring to an end Israel’s
unlawful presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory is a matter to be dealt with by the General Assembly, which requested this opinion, as well as the Security Council. In an announcement – watch below – Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant told Channel 12 that starving the roughly two million people who live in the Gaza Strip is necessary to ensure Israel’s “existence in the region.”

Wir sehen im Grunde eine endlose Reihe von Spiegelungen. Aber manchmal muss ein Schriftsteller den Spiegel zerschlagen – denn von der anderen Seite dieses Spiegels blickt uns die Wahrheit ins Auge.
Ich glaube, dass den existierenden, kolossalen Widrigkeiten zum Trotz die unerschrockene, unbeirrbare, heftige intellektuelle Entschlossenheit, als Bürger die wirkliche Wahrheit unseres Lebens und unserer Gesellschaften zu bestimmen, eine ausschlaggebende Verpflichtung darstellt, die uns allen zufällt. Sie ist in der Tat zwingend notwendig.
Wenn sich diese Entschlossenheit nicht in unserer politischen Vision verkörpert, bleiben wir bar jeder Hoffnung, das wiederherzustellen, was wir schon fast verloren haben – die Würde des Menschen.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) calls for an independent investigation of these killings and for Israel to stop targeting journalists. More than 130 media professionals have been killed in Gaza by the Israeli army since 7 October, including at least 31 while doing their job.
When questioned about targeting journalists, the Israeli army usually replies that these accusations “are false,” despite mounting evidence to the contrary. Yet the day after their attack on Ismail al-Ghoul’s car, the army took responsibility for killing the 27-year-old, stating on X (formerly Twitter) that it had eliminated a “terrorist” and “journalist.” Since then, the IDF’s official position has consisted of accusations discrediting al-Ghoul – without mentioning his cameraman Rami al-Rifi, who was also killed in the attack – based on insufficient, questionable evidence, according to RSF’s analysis.

Senators rejected the amendment 86-9 as they are debating a separate repeal of two authorizations of military force in Iraq. There is broad bipartisan support to withdraw that congressional approval granted in 1991 and 2002 for military strikes against Saddam Hussein‘s regime.
While those two authorizations are rarely used and focused on just one country, Iraq, the 2001 measure gave President George W. Bush broad authority for the invasion of Afghanistan and the fight against terrorism, approving force „against those nations, organizations, or persons“ that planned or aided the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.

Unabhängig von der technischen Umsetzung der Chatkontrolle, hält Threema die mit der Chatkontrolle einhergehende Massenüberwachung für nicht mit der Demokratie vereinbar. Zudem sei sie unwirksam und untergrabe die Datensicherheit.
Der Messenger warnt auch davor, dass es später keinen Weg gäbe um zu überprüfen, ob die Chatkontrolle wirklich nur bei CSAM (Missbrauchsmaterial) Anwendung finde: „Ist der Massenüberwachungsapparat erst einmal implementiert, kann er leicht für das Erkennen anderer Inhalte als CSAM erweitert werden, ohne dass dies jemand merkt“, so Threema. Aus Sicht eines Dienstbetreibers sei der Erkennungsmechanismus, der von Dritten entwickelt und unterhalten würde, nichts anderes als eine Blackbox.
Sollte die EU-Verordnung zur Chatkontrolle in einer Form durchkommen, die verschlüsselte Kommunikation untergräbt, möchte Threema zuerst alle Optionen wie rechtliche Schritte und technische Workarounds prüfen. Sollte es keinen anderen Weg geben „werden wir andere Kommunikationsdienste aufrufen, die EU mit uns zu verlassen.“
Auch Signal-Messenger gegen Chatkontrolle
Am Montag hatte auch Meredith Whittaker, die Chefin des Signal-Messengers, den belgischen „Kompromissvorschlag“ kritisiert. Mit dem Begriff „Upload Moderation“ hätte die belgische Ratspräsidentschaft der Technologie des Client-Side-Scannings nur einen neuen Namen verpasst, das Scannen bleibe aber das gleiche. Es sei letztlich egal, ob man das Untergraben von Verschlüsselung nun Hintertür, Vordertür oder „Upload Moderation“ nenne, der Effekt bleibe gleich, so Whittaker. Sie warnt vor einer „gefährlichen Schwachstelle in der Kerninfrastruktur“, die außerdem über Europa hinaus globale Auswirkungen hätte.

Die Verhandlungen zwischen den EU-Staaten über die umstrittene Chatkontrolle sind nun unter anderem wegen der deutschen Bedenken vorerst gescheitert. Eine Abstimmung im Rat, die am Donnerstag angesetzt war, wurde vertragt. Es habe sich abgezeichnet, dass keine ausreichende Mehrheit erreicht werden würde, hieß es am Donnerstag von der belgischen Ratspräsidentschaft. Der Vorsitz beschloss daher, den Punkt von der Tagesordnung zu nehmen.

Many good, sincere scientists toiled away on their own small portion of that enormous report. These people no doubt did their best to be honest and accurate.
But here’s the problem: almost no one will ever read that 7,000-page report. (…)
Everyone knows this. Which is why the IPCC also produces documents in the 20 to 30-page range bearing the title: Summary for Policymakers. (…)
In fact, IPCC authors only draft these summaries. And then something incredible transpires.
A big IPCC meeting takes place. Attended by governments. Although some people in the room are scientists, the vast majority are diplomats, politicians, foreign affairs specialists, bureaucrats, and assorted other officials. These people then spend the next week re-writing the summary authored by scientists.(…)
But the bad news doesn’t stop there. There’s actually a step in the IPCC process in which the original, lengthy report gets amended so that it conforms to the politically-negotiated Summary. I am not making this up.

Correlations between geomagnetic-field and climate parameters have been suggested repeatedly, but possible links are controversially discussed. Here we test if weak (Earth-strength) magnetic fields can affect climatically relevant properties of seawater. We found the solubility of air in seawater to be by 15% lower under reduced magneticfield (20 mT) compared to normal field conditions (50 mT). The magnetic-field effect on CO2 solubility is twice as large, from which we surmise that geomagnetic field variations modulate the carbon exchange between atmosphere and ocean. A 1% reduction in magnetic dipole moment may release up to ten times more CO2 from the surface ocean than is emitted by subaerial volcanism.

1. Ist der vor fünf Monaten vom Staat unter Anglizismen-Blödelei (“Lockdown”, “Social Distancing”) ausgerufene Ausnahmezustand verfassungsgemäß?

Das “Robert Koch Institut” ist eine Regierungsbehörde. Eine Re-gier-ungs-be-hör-de.
Hat der Bundestag oder dessen “Ausschuss für Gesundheit”, von dem Sie nie gehört haben, zu irgendeinem Zeitpunkt die Angaben der Regierungsbehörde “Robert Koch Institut” kontrolliert?
Sind innerhalb des gesamten fünfmonatigen Ausnahmezustands, oder gar vorher, die gewählten Abgeordneten des Parlaments auch nur ein einziges Mal bei dieser zu drei heiligen Buchstaben aus dem Morgenlande geronnenen Behörde aufgetaucht und haben irgendetwas, auch nur eine der auserwählten Zahlen denen sich diese Bananenrepublik zu Füßen geworfen hat, tatsächlich überprüft? Haben sie kontrolliert, woher dieses ganze neue Zahlentestament überhaupt stammt, wer es zusammengezählt oder einfach erzählt hat? Haben sie Akten studiert, Datenbanken durchforstet, vor Ort, so als ginge es für sie um einen Steuernachlass von 500 Euro wegen eines neuen, potentiell absetzbaren Smart Devices in ihrer 7-Zimmer-Villa, also praktisch um ihr Leben?
Nein.

Man darf nun spekulieren, dass morgen explizit Kretschmann alles daran setzen wird, der vom üblichen Verdächtigen Schäuble (Rückblick: “Einmal einkaufen, schon ´ne Grundgesetzänderung“) betriebenen Verfassungsänderung zuzuarbeiten. Wenn das, zumindest vorläufig, wieder nicht gelingt, wie beim Versuch Schäubles im Bundestag, wird versucht werden das Infektionsschutzgesetz so zu verändern, dass es zumindest die bisherigen staatlichen Maßnahmen im Nachhinein legalisiert und, aus staatlicher Sicht, “bestenfalls” der Bundesregierung erlaubt, demnächst nach eigenem Ermessen zu bestimmen wann sie Bevölkerung und Parlament gnädig gestattet sich zu versammeln, zu arbeiten, oder aus dem Haus zu gehen.
Und das nennt man dann einen Putsch.

Am 19.März, dem Tag des Angriffs von Frankreich, Großbritannien, Kanada, Italien und den USA auf Libyen, wurde in Moskau eine der erbärmlichsten Erklärungen in der russischen Geschichte veröffentlicht (Angriffskrieg gegen Libyen beginnt: Ticker). Das russische Außenministerium von Sergei Lawrow:
“In Moskau bedauern wir diese bewaffnete Intervention im Rahmen der UN Resolution 1973, die hastig beschlossen wurde.”
Die Weltöffentlichkeit konstatiert: Russlands Staatsführung ist ein Haufen Tölpel, dem – wenn er schon nicht lesen kann und deshalb nicht weiss was vor sich geht – selbst das Wort „Veto“ mit einem einfachen Armhochhalten schon zu viel ist. Das Gleiche gilt für die Atomschwachmacht China, deren leseunkundige kommunistische Staatspartei immerhin 1.3 Milliarden Menschen herumkommandiert. In der Parteizeitung „People´s Daily“ redete man sich heute nun selbst in ein Gewissen, was man nicht hat (1):
„Die blutgetränkten Gewitter, denen Irak seit acht Jahren unterzogen wurde und das unaussprechliche Leiden seines Volkes sind ein Spiegel und eine Warnung. Die militärischen Attacken auf Libyen, folgend den Kriegen in Afghanisten und Irak, sind das das dritte Mal, dass einige Länder bewaffnete Aktionen gegen souveräne Staaten gestartet haben. Die Weltöffentlichkeit versteht: früher hiess es in China „Bombardiert das Hauptquartier“, letzten Freitag hiess es „Bombardiert Libyen“ und heute wieder anders herum. Mal sehen, zu was sich Chinas Staatsführung am Donnerstag entscheidet. Vielleicht der Einfachheit halber zu „Bombardiert irgendwas“.

Ukraine is seeking to obtain from Israel missile interceptor capabilities, but Jerusalem has so far refused as Israeli leaders seek to avoid overly antagonizing Russia. This hesitance appears largely linked to Israel’s strategic need to maintain freedom of operations in Syria, where Russian forces largely control the airspace. Israel is one of the few countries that maintains relatively good relations with both Ukraine, a fellow Western democracy, and Russia.

Since the October 7 attack by Hamas on Israel, in which more than 1,400 Israelis were killed, shares of Boeing Co, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and Raytheon Technologies (RTX) have all increased in value, collectively adding roughly $23 billion in market capitalization.

Article III
States Parties to the Treaty shall carry on activities in the exploration and use of outer space, including the moon and other celestial bodies, in accordance with international law, including the Charter of the United Nations, in the interest of maintaining international peace and security and promoting international co-operation and understanding.
Article IV
States Parties to the Treaty undertake not to place in orbit around the earth any objects carrying nuclear weapons or any other kinds of weapons of mass destruction, install such weapons on celestial bodies, or station such weapons in outer space in any other manner.
The moon and other celestial bodies shall be used by all States Parties to the Treaty exclusively for peaceful purposes. The establishment of military bases, installations and fortifications, the testing of any type of weapons and the conduct of military manoeuvres on celestial bodies shall be forbidden. The use of military personnel for scientific research or for any other peaceful purposes shall not be prohibited. The use of any equipment or facility necessary for peaceful exploration of the moon and other celestial bodies shall also not be prohibited.

Die amerikanische Drohne sei nicht im Rahmen der US-Mission „Prosperity Guardian“, die gegen Angriffe der Houthi-Rebellen im Roten Meer patrouilliert, im Einsatz gewesen. Denn die Besatzung der „Hessen“ sei nach Sichtung der unbekannten Drohne mit Mitgliedern von „Prosperity Guardian“ in Kontakt gewesen. Doch auch diese wussten nicht Bescheid vom Einsatz des Flugobjekts. Diese sei vermutlich für eine andere US-Mission in der Region unterwegs gewesen.

An exiled Iranian arms dealer named Manucher Ghorbanifar claimed to have contacts with a moderate faction inside Iran, and further alleged that weapons sales would improve that faction’s standing. Ghorbanifar collaborated with Israel, which proved to be an important intermediary. While Israel was no ally of Iran, it was also no ally of Iraq, and the ongoing war between the two countries kept them both distracted. Israel began selling U.S.-made weapons to Iran in 1981, even after the U.S. State Department began an effort to end arm sales, known as Operation Staunch, in 1983.

As of today, those foundational commitments and guarantees are under direct and tangible threat, from the very government charged with upholding them.
WE DECLARE that, with effect from the moment of the termination of the Mandate being tonight, the eve of Sabbath, the 6th Iyar, 5708 (15th May, 1948), until the establishment of the elected, regular authorities of the State in accordance with the Constitution which shall be adopted by the Elected Constituent Assembly not later than the 1st October 1948, the People‘s Council shall act as a Provisional Council of State, and its executive organ, the People‘s Administration, shall be the Provisional Government of the Jewish State, to be called „Israel“.

It is recalled that Nicaragua filed an Application instituting proceedings against Germany concerning alleged violations by Germany of its obligations under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and their Additional Protocols, “intransgressible principles of international humanitarian law” and other norms of general international law in relation to the Occupied Palestinian Territory, particularly the Gaza Strip (see press release 2024/19).
The hearings will be devoted to the request for the indication of provisional measures
contained in Nicaragua’s Application. Nicaragua asks the Court to indicate provisional measures as a matter of extreme urgency, pending the Court’s determination on the merits of the case, with respect to Germany’s “participation in the ongoing plausible genocide and serious breaches of international humanitarian law and other peremptory norms of general international law occurring in the Gaza Strip”.

Israel needs to start getting used to the number 10. That’s the number of years Israel will probably stay in the Gaza Strip, according to the current thinking emanating from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office.
The estimates are that it will take one or two years for the first stage of the war — eradicating Hamas — to be complete, and another eight years for an alternate government to stabilize, if it does at all.
