Handwritten in Arabic, the document, obtained from Gaza, appeared to lay out Hamasâs plan for psychological warfare against Israel, claiming that Hamas was in no rush to reach a deal to release hostages or to end the war. Some of the messaging aligned with Mr. Netanyahuâs own approach.
Critics said the Bild article based on the leak appeared to be part of a deliberate effort by the prime minister or his loyalists to weaken the domestic campaign for the hostagesâ release and influence Israeli public opinion in favor of Mr. Netanyahuâs negotiating positions.
Itâs a classic trick of liars and crooks â and itâs shaping Israelâs response to war and disaster
A real inquiry would likely deliver harsh conclusions about Netanyahuâs misguided strategy of coddling Hamas; his failure to heed intelligence before Oct. 7; the staggering human cost of the war that followed; the failure to dismantle Hamas despite two years of brutal fighting; Israelâs growing international isolation; and Netanyahuâs repeated rejection of diplomatic exit ramps.
It is obvious that a commission dealing with such explosive matters must not be controlled by the very people it will judge. Yet that is exactly the system Netanyahu has engineered, while arguing that a state inquiry would be stacked against him. Most Israelis see the attempted whitewash clearly, and some three quarters of the public have consistently said they want a state commission.

Israelâs High Court of Justice ruled Wednesday that the cabinetâs dismissal of Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar was âimproperâ and âunlawful.â The court found the firing lacked valid justification and was based on a âthin and shaky factual foundation.â
Expanding on the courtâs reasoning, court president Justice Isaac Amit condemned the governmentâs failure to consult the Senior Appointments Advisory Committee.
Israeli security chief says heâll step down June 15, facing pressure from Netanyahu
But itâs unclear if Barâs tenure will last that long. On March 21, the Israeli cabinet unanimously voted to dismiss Bar from his position as the head of the Israel Security Agency, commonly known as the Shin Bet.
Barâs dismissal was to take effect on April 10, but Israelâs High Court froze the firing, enraging Netanyahu and his right-wing allies, who can still mount an effort to fire Bar before the self-announced retirement date.
