Statement of UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini to the United Nations General Assembly

I have three urgent requests to prevent this devastating outcome:

First, I ask that Member States act to prevent the implementation of the legislation against UNRWA.

Changes to UNRWA’s mandate are the prerogative of the General Assembly, not individual Member States.

Second, I ask that Member States ensure that any plan for a political transition delineates UNRWA’s role.

The Agency must progressively conclude its mandate within the framework of a political solution, and hand over its services to an empowered Palestinian administration.

Finally, I ask that Member States maintain funding to UNRWA, and do not withhold or divert funds on the assumption that the Agency can no longer operate.

The cost of providing critical services, including education and healthcare, during a transition will be immense.

I must also alert Member States that abruptly dismantling the Agency will cost more than half a billion dollars in staff separation indemnities alone.

“Without intervention by member states, UNRWA will collapse, plunging millions of Palestinians into chaos,” Philippe Lazzarini warned during a special session requested by Palestine after the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, passed on Monday two laws to ban the agency’s activity and any Israeli official’s contacts with it within three months.

Trump vows to lead ‘golden age of America’ in victory speech: ‚Fix everything‘

„This was, I believe, the greatest political movement of all time. There‘s never been anything like this in this country, and maybe beyond. And now it‘s going to reach a new level of importance because we‘re going to help our country heal,“ Trump said just before 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

„We‘re going to help our country here. We have a country that needs help, and it needs help very badly. We‘re going to fix our borders. We‘re going to fix everything about our country and we‘ve made history for a reason tonight. And the reason is going to be just that. We overcame obstacles that nobody thought possible,“ he added to cheers from the crowd.

In her address to the UN General Assembly’s Third Committee, UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese expressed frustration, saying, „I always experience a sense of shock and delusion when I come to this room because many of you recite the same script you had last year.“ She acknowledged the condemnation of Hamas‘s attack, the solidarity shown to Israeli victims, and calls for the release of hostages but questioned the lack of empathy toward Palestinians, stating, „Is it possible that after 42,000 people killed, you cannot empathize with the Palestinians?“ Albanese criticized those who had ignored the crisis in Gaza, saying, „Empathy has evaporated from this room, and empathy is the glue that makes us stand united as humanity.“

Trump Rally Speaker Tony Hinchcliffe Calls Puerto Rico ‘Floating Island Of Garbage’—Campaign, GOP Lawmakers React

(Oct 28, 2024)

Hinchcliffe—a roast comic who hosts the podcast “Kill Tony”—opened Sunday’s rally as one of many speakers before Trump, and said: “There’s a lot going on. I don’t know if you know this, but there’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think it’s called Puerto Rico.”

The remark was met with uncertainty by the crowd, leading Hinchcliffe to laugh and say, “okay, we’re getting there, again, normally I don’t follow the national anthem.”

Trump campaign senior advisor Daniella Alvarez said in a statement to Forbes following the rally the “joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign.”

Vernunft und Frieden statt Kriegsbesoffenheit

(October 17, 2024)

(Johannes Arlt (SPD): Was?)

(Beifall beim BSW)

Dieser Wahnsinn muss jedenfalls gestoppt werden.

Zweites Beispiel. Ab 2026 wollen Sie US-Raketen in Deutschland stationieren, die russische Kommandozentralen präventiv ausschalten können sollen….

Waffenlieferungen an Israel stoppen

(October 11, 2024)

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Wednesday reiterated his urgent call for an end to violence and a diplomatic resolution in the Middle East shortly after Israel‘s foreign minister declared that the U.N. chief was barred from entering the country, a move that drew international condemnation.

„The raging fires in the Middle East are fast becoming an inferno,“ Guterres told a meeting of the U.N. Gaza crisis reveals ‘true nature’ of Israeli regime, Iranian President says

(September 24, 2024)

Recalling the “historic” 2015 nuclear deal, he noted that Iran, under the Joint Comprehensive Programme of Action (JCPOA), had agreed to the highest level of nuclear oversight in return for the recognition of its rights and the lifting of sanctions.

However, former US President Donald Trump’s unilateral withdrawal from the JCPOA represented a “threat-ridden approach” to politics, Mr. Pezeshkian added, stressing that unilateral sanctions targeted innocent people and weakened the Iranian economy.

“We are ready to engage with JCPOA participants. If JCPOA commitments are implemented fully and in good faith, dialogue on other issues can follow,” he said.

“We have the opportunity to transcend limitations and enter a new era, commencing with the acknowledgment of Iran‘s security concerns and cooperation on mutual challenges,” he said.

Reiterating the destructive impact of sanctions, he emphasized that Iran is ready to foster meaningful economic, social, political and security partnerships with its neighbours and global partners, “based on equal footing.”

‘This is the moment for peace, progress, equality’: UK Prime Minister

While the Universal Declaration of Human Rights inspires him, from his student days to being a prime minister, because it speaks of equal rights and peace, he said that notion “could seem like a distant hope today” amid a landscape of war, poverty, climate change or pandemics.

“My message today is this: We are returning the UK to responsible global leadership because I think the international system can be better,” he said. “This is the moment to reassert fundamental principles…to recommit to the UN…to work together for peace, progress and equality.”

Outlining a path towards those goals, he first pointed to ongoing wars, expressing London’s support for Ukraine. Calling on Israel to “step back from the brink” to provide space for a diplomat settlement, he said an immediate ceasefire is needed in Gaza, where the suffering continues to grow. Diplomacy is the only way to break the cycle of violence, he said.

“This is our proposal to you, you can accept it, amend it or change it, we are ready for all that.”

Concluding his address, Mr. Abbas said that “while we recognize the State of Israel, Israel does not recognize us”.

“We want a solution that will protect both countries – the State of Palestine and the State of Israel – so they can co-exist in peace, stability and security.”

Secretary-General‘s remarks at the Opening of the General Debate of the Seventy-ninth Session of the General Assembly ..

Many have said that the differences and divisions today are just too great.

That it is impossible for us to come together for the common good.

You proved that is not true.

The Summit of the Future showed that with a spirit of dialogue and compromise, we can join forces to steer our world to a more sustainable path.

It is not the end.

It is a start of a journey, a compass in the whirlwind.

Let‘s keep going.

Let‘s move our world towards less impunity and more accountability …. less inequality and more justice … less uncertainty and more opportunity.

The people of the world are looking to us – and succeeding generations will look back on us.

Let them find us on the side of the United Nations Charter … on the side of our shared values and principles … and on the right side of history.

Harold Pinter – Nobelvorlesung: Kunst, Wahrheit & Politik

(7. Dezember 2005)

B‘Tselem at the UNSC: For the Israeli government, the occupation and the settlements matter more than human life

On Sunday, we woke up to the news that six Israeli hostages were executed by Hamas, just before soldiers reached them in a tunnel in Gaza. Another six, added to tens of thousands of people in this land who should not have died over the past year. During this week, hundreds of thousands of Israelis have taken to the streets. They feel angry, desperate and betrayed by their government. They have understood, perhaps for the first time, that the Israeli government does not want to return the hostages in a deal, but to continue the war indefinitely. They see that the occupation and the settlements matter more than human life – and not only of Palestinians, said B‘Tselem Executive Director Yuli Novak, who addressed the UN Security Council last night (Wednesday) . B’Tselem – the Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories was invited by the Slovenian President of the Security Council to provide an expert review of the state of human rights in Israel/Palestine following the war.
