Four Arrested in Protest at Knesset Against Death Penalty Law for Palestinians, Petitions to Supreme Court
The Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) filed a petition with the Supreme Court demanding the repeal of the âDeath Penalty for Terrorists Lawâ, minutes after it passed its second and third readings in the Knesset. On Tuesday morning, Adalah â The Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel, the Public Committee Against Torture in Israel (PCATI), HaMoked: Center for the Defense of the Individual, Physicians for Human Rights and Gisha, together with Hadash-Taâal MKs Aida Touma-Sliman, Ayman Odeh, and Ahmed Tibi, filed a second urgent petition to the Israeli Supreme Court, demanding that the âDeath Penalty for Terrorists Lawâ be declared null and void. The petitioners argue that the law represents a complete negation of the right to life and imposes cruel and inhuman punishment.
Israel: Arab parties agree to revive Joint List ahead of Knesset election
„The Joint List could become the second or third largest party in the Knesset in terms of size and representation, forming a parliamentary bloc capable of achieving far more than any small party acting alone,“ he added.
Efforts to re-establish the Joint List have been underway for some time. In August, The Times of Israel reported that party leaders were holding talks aimed at reviving the alliance, amid frustration over Israelâs war on Gaza and a desire to increase the political influence of Palestinian citizens of Israel.
Palestinian parties in Israel agree to revive Joint List ahead of elections
The pledge document, entitled „Joint List Now“, was signed by Sami Abu Shehadeh, head of the National Democratic Assembly (Balad); Ayman Odeh, head of the Hadash alliance; Ahmad Tibi, head of the Arab Movement for Change (Taâal); and Mansour Abbas, head of the United Arab List (Raâam).
The parties first formed the Joint List in 2015 to run on a shared platform representing Palestinian citizens of Israel.
Penalties for Hadash MKs Who Called Occupation Soldiers âMurderersâ
Odeh was punished with salary deduction and suspended from the plenum and Knesset committees for two weeks, among other things for statements that âwhat the army is doing in Gaza is murder and massacre.â Touma-Sliman and Tibi were suspended from the plenum and the Knesset for three days, following posts in which they referred to Israeli soldiers in Gaza as âmurderers and occupiers.â
MK Cassif: Hussam Abu Safiya is the Symbol of the Gaza Genocide
According to Hadash-Taâal MK Ofer Cassif, âWe must not allow the Israeli government to kill this noble man [Abu Safiya]. His life and liberty, like those of all Palestinians, must be protected.â âIn human history, every genocide has had its own martyrs and symbols. Those who faced barbaric power and humanitarian calamity with resilient, stoic virtue. Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya and his unlawful abduction is the symbol of the Gaza genocide. We must not allow him to perish in captivity. I filed an official query for the Minister of Defense, like habeas corpus, demanding to know of his whereabouts. But this isnât enough. I urge all to demand his immediate release from Israeli captivity.â
MK Ahmed Tibi (Hadash-Taâal) called in the Knesset plenum on Monday, December 30, for the release of the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital. Tibi stated that âDr. Abu Safiya has become an international icon in the last 24 hours. With a systematic destruction of hospitals in Gaza, and all health infrastructure, to render life impossible after the conflict â Israel is the country that has destroyed the most hospitals globally.â âThis brave doctor, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, whose 15-year-old child was killed, and later had his hospital shot at and was wounded, remained with his team and patients â itâs a brave decision.â He added: âUltimately, he came out to the tank and was arrested. Today, heâs in the detention facility at Sde Teiman and there is an international demand to release him. Why? Because doctors are killed in Sde Teiman. Dr. Albatsh, an orthopedist, was detained, tortured, and died. I called on the Defense Minister to release him today.â
According to Hadash-Taâal MK Aida Touma-Sliman, âDozens of Palestinians who were held at some point by the Israeli Army are nowhere to be found. The fact is extremely concerning given that according to Btâselem, more than 60 Palestinians have died while imprisoned by Israel since the beginning of the war â some with clear indications of violence and torture. Like the darkest regimes, Israel is creating, under the cover of war, a parallel world of torture and violence where people are being disappeared.â
Knesset Passes McCarthyistic Law Allowing Far-Right Government to Fire Teachers
The bill was attacked during the debate in the plenum by Hadash-Taâal MK Ahmad Tibi, who retweeted a statement by the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) arguing that its purpose was âto regulate the discourse in schools and to harm teachers whose statements and worldview do not coincide with those of the education minister and the political parties controlling the Education Ministry.â
âThe purpose of the law is to threaten teachers and principals of Arab schools, to mark them and make them a target for surveillance and persecution,â the rights group stated, arguing that the tools already at its disposal before the current law were âadequate and sufficient.â âThe law severely violates the rights to expression, employment and pedagogical autonomy of teachers and administrators,â it added. The teachersâ unions also opposed the bill.

(05.03.2024)

Racist Ben Gvir Warns Hadash Leader âNext in Lineâ to Be Expelled from Knesset
Racist National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir appears to threaten Hadash MK Ayman Odeh with impeachment, tweeting out a picture of him with the message ânext in line.â The photo shared by Ben Gvir shows Odeh holding the arm of Khalida Jarrar, a legislator and senior figure in the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, as she flashes a victory sign following her release from prison in September 2021. On last December 27, Jarrar was arrested again by occupation forces.
The far-right leaderâs message comes hours after members of the Knesset House Committee overwhelmingly supported a motion to expel Hadash-Taâal party lawmaker Ofer Cassif, voting 14-2 to advance his impeachment to the Knesset plenum following two days of contentious debate. During Tuesdayâs debate on Cassifâs impeachment, Hadash-Taâal MK Ahmad Tibi warned the Communist lawmakerâs ouster would âset a precedentâ allowing for the impeachment of âall the Arab MKs in the Knesset.â âThis is a black day for the Knesset,â Tibi declares following the vote.
