PM Nawaf Salam at beginning of Cabinet session at Grand Serail: We hope ceasefire will succeed and thank all who contributed to this outcome

Premier Salam said at the beginning of the Cabinet session held at the Grand Serail: „Since the start of the war imposed on Lebanon, the Lebanese government has continuously worked to bring it to an end and to spare Lebanon and the Lebanese people further harm.

Today, we hope that the ceasefire announced by the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran will succeed in putting an end to this war and stopping the killing, destruction, displacement, and all the tragedies and suffering inflicted upon the Lebanese people. I can only extend my sincere thanks to all those who contributed to reaching this outcome.“

No safe route for civilians to exit southern Lebanon

Some of the Palestinian refugee camps are densely populated. About 28,000 Palestinian refugees live in Tyre, according to the UN, and only about one-third have left since the displacement threat was issued.

The Israelis are trying to make it seem as if they’ve given everyone enough warning to safely flee, but the Geneva Convention requires that evacuation routes are safe, that people are given enough time, and that a return route is provided so the occupation does not continue.

Israeli military activities in southern Lebanon do not meet those requirements.

Iran suspends military operation against Israel but says it will resume if attacks on Lebanon continue

(2 hr 50 min ago)

“The powerful Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in support of the oppressed people of Lebanon, delivered a painful response to this regime (Israel),” Iran’s military said in a statement cited by Tasnim news agency.

“Should the aggressions and hostile acts continue – including in southern Lebanon – far more severe and crushing measures than before will be forthcoming,” it said.

Based on Mr. Aoun‘s comments, one would think it‘s Iran that has occupied 1/5 of Lebanon, displaced 1/4 of Lebanese and bombing his country on daily basis. Had Lebanon been bargaining chip for Iran, we‘d have a deal long ago.

Iran says ceasefire in Lebanon remains condition for US deal

Iran’s Foreign Ministry said on June 1 that a ceasefire in Lebanon remains a key condition for any deal with the US to end the Middle East war.

“We insist that a ceasefire in Lebanon is an essential condition for any deal aimed at ending the war,” the ministry’s spokesman, Esmaeil Baqaei, said at a weekly news briefing, as Israel expands its offensive in Lebanon.

Is Israel trying to foment civil war in Lebanon?

On April 14, the Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors to the United States, Nada Hamadeh and Yechiel Leiter, met in Washington with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The goal is ostensibly to extend the ceasefire while working “on longer term disarming of Hezbollah, along with a peace deal between the countries.” During the two hours in which the meeting took place, Israel bombed at least 23 towns in southern Lebanon; afterward, Leiter said that both Israel and Lebanon were united in “liberating Lebanon” from Hezbollah.

This came less than a week after one of the most violent days in Lebanese history. On April 8, Israeli warplanes ravaged large parts of the country, killing at least 303 people and wounding 1,150.

Lebanese Civil War

Among the consequences of the war was the Syrian occupation of Lebanon until 2005; the Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon until 2000; the creation of the Hezbollah, a Shiʿi militia formed to confront Israel and later adapted into a political party and social welfare network; the expulsion of the PLO from Lebanon; and the rebuilding of Lebanon by a handful of businessmen, including the two-time prime minister (1992–98; 2000–04) Rafic al-Hariri. With Palestinian forces continuing to conduct cross-border raids into Israel, Israel launched a major reprisal attack in March 1978, sending troops into the south of Lebanon as far as the Litani River. The resulting conflict led to the establishment of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL)—a peacekeeping force meant to secure Israeli withdrawal and support the return of Lebanese authority in the south—as well as to the creation of the South Lebanese Army (SLA)—a militia led by Saad Haddad and armed and financed by Israel to function as a proxy militia under Lebanese Christian command.

Hezbollah ‘was counting on Iran’ to deliver Lebanon ceasefire

(today)

Now, Hezbollah can continue to fire rockets across the border, and it has been doing that. Hezbollah has also been trying to slow Israel’s ground invasion in the south. But as you can see, Israel is the one that has the upper hand. It controls the skies, it can cause death, it can cause destruction, and this is all heaping pressure on the population and on the Lebanese government.

Hezbollah was counting on Iran having the leverage to silence this front, but that has not happened yet, despite statements from Iranian officials.

Hezbollah just restarted the fight that Israel was waiting to finish

(March 2, 2026)

In the pre-dawn hours of Monday morning, Hezbollah opened a new front in the US-Israeli war against Iran when it launched “missiles and a swarm of drones” at a military base in northern Israel.

The Iran-backed militant group, which has its power base in southern Lebanon, called it revenge for the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Never mind that Israel says the attack did no damage. One projectile was intercepted, while others fell in open areas.

Or that Lebanon’s Prime Minister Nawaf Salam called it “an irresponsible and suspicious act,” and banned Hezbollah’s military activities.

Israel has been poised for this moment for months.

The military also said Israeli attacks are ongoing and do not distinguish between soldiers and civilians across various regions.

It warned against incitement and efforts by some media outlets and social media platforms to undermine confidence in the armed forces, noting that such narratives could have negative repercussions for civilians and fuel internal tensions.

Israel offensive in Lebanon echoes tactics used in Gaza, think tank says

Maha Yahya, director of the Carnegie Middle East Center think tank, told CNN’s Eleni Giokos that “we’re seeing a replay of things we have seen in Gaza.”

She said Israel had issued evacuation orders across roughly 10% of Lebanese territory, affecting an estimated half a million people.

“It’s the same story, mass evacuation notices, targeting of Israeli policy makers, threatening ambulances and accusing ambulances of carrying Hezbollah members,” Yahya said.

“It’s no more just about whether Hezbollah may have military assets. It’s basically a collective punishment of the entire population,” she added.

More than 1 million people in Lebanon have been internally displaced and at least 886 people killed since the latest conflict began two weeks ago, according to Lebanese authorities.

Ground Troops, Airstrikes, and Displacement: No Guarantee of Safety in Lebanon With Relentless Israeli Assaults

(March 9, 2026)

Since the escalation began last week, Israeli attacks have killed at least 486 people in Lebanon—including 83 children—and wounded more than 1,313 others, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry. “On average, more than 10 children have been killed every day across Lebanon over the past week, with approximately 36 children injured each day,” UNICEF said in a statement.

Sweeping displacement orders issued by the Israeli military have forced hundreds of thousands of people from their homes. After ordering everyone south of the Litani River to flee north on March 4, the Israeli military issued a displacement order for all of Beirut’s southern suburb of Dahiye—home to approximately 700,000 people—causing panic and traffic jams across the capital. Evacuation orders have also been issued for parts of the Bekaa Valley.

Egypt detains pro-Palestine protesters on 7 October anniversary, says rights group

According to the London-based Egyptian Network for Human Rights, a small group of young people held a protest on the Nile Corniche in Cairo on Monday, carrying Palestinian and Lebanese flags and banners condemning the deadly Israeli onslaught on Gaza and Lebanon.

Citing eyewitness accounts, the rights group said several participants were detained by security forces, but the exact number and names have yet to be confirmed.

“The Egyptian Network for Human Rights condemns the arrest of citizens peacefully expressing their support for their brothers and sisters in occupied Palestine and Lebanon and their opposition to the war on both countries, and calls for their immediate release,” the group said in a statement shared with Middle East Eye.
