Araghchi interview draws fire from Iran hardliners

Beyond espionage: Araghchi says spies seek to shape Iran‘s decisions
Omid Memarian, an Iran analyst at DAWN, said one possible manifestation of the kind of influence Araghchi described would be officials advocating policies that prolong the war despite the damage continued conflict causes to the Islamic Republic‘s own interests.
„Some of the decisions they are making are exactly the things that Israelis might wish for,“ Memarian told Iran International.
„When it comes to Iran‘s national security and national interests, they don‘t make sense,” he added.

Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said during an interview that was released on Sunday that he resisted attempts by the United States and Israel to bribe his country.
Araghchi: Pre-Planned Scenarios Were in Place for Khamenei’s Death
Reiterating that he has not yet seen Mojtaba Khamenei, the third Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, Araghchi described decisions to enter or end a war as “collective,” noting that negotiations with the United States were not his personal initiative. He emphasized that decisions on war and peace are made within the Supreme National Security Council.
Araghchi says security breach behind Khamenei assassination remains and affects decision-making
According to the Iran International website, Araghchi made the remarks during an interview on the programme The Story of the War. He said he was at Khamenei’s headquarters on 28 February when the site came under attack.
Araghchi said the attack on the headquarters was carried out through a security breach, adding: “That breach still exists, and it also affects the direction and mechanisms of decision-making.”

Why has Iran’s air defence network failed so badly?

For long-range defence, Iran has developed the Bavar-373 which has comparable capabilities to the Russian S-300. For short range air defence, the country has reverse engineered the Chinese HQ-7 as the Ya Zahr, and in 2021 the Zoubin system was unveiled.
Besides these copy cat systems, the country also leans on ageing Russian air defences, most notably the S-300PMU-2 battery.
However, Israel destroyed a significant number of these components in October 2024 and again during the 12-Day War the following year. Worse still, the Israeli Defence Forces learned all they can about the system in 2015 during joint air drills with Greece, which formerly operated its predecessor, the S-300PMU-1.
The exercise allowed Israel to develop comprehensive electronic warfare (EW) technologies specifically designed to compromise radars like those used with S-300 batteries: the Icebreaker missile and Haroop loitering munitions.
Norway: International law is worth defending, even when allies break it
In an interview with Middle East Eye‘s Expert Witness podcast in Oslo, four months into the devastating war, Andreas Kravik said the war on Iran, launched on 28 February, had no basis in law.
„In our interpretation of the law, it is not a legal operation,“ Kravik said. „We think that is a violation of the UN Charter, and we have said so in no unclear terms.“
Kravik, a public international lawyer and the foreign ministry‘s former chief of legal affairs, said a state could lawfully use force against another only with authorisation from the UN Security Council, in self-defence against an immediate threat, or with the consent of the state concerned. None applied in Iran‘s case.
„There is no authorisation here from the UN Security Council… and there was no consent from Iranian authorities,“ he said. Norway had carried out its own legal assessment, he added.

Iran’s president to Americans: Look beyond war propaganda fog, reject ‘manufactured threat‘
The president sought to draw a sharp line between governments and their citizens, stating that the Iranian people harbor no ill will towards Americans. “The Iranian people harbor no enmity toward other nations, including the people of America, Europe, or neighboring countries” he wrote, describing this distinction as “a deeply rooted principle in Iranian culture and collective consciousness—not a temporary political stance.”
Building on this theme, Pezeshkian noted that the perception of Iran as a danger is an invention. He said such a view is “the product of political and economic whims of the powerful—the need to manufacture an enemy in order to justify pressure, maintain military dominance, sustain the arms industry, and control strategic markets.”
“In such an environment, if a threat does not exist, it is invented,” he added.
Iranian president says it does not view American people as enemies
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said ordinary Americans are not considered enemies despite longstanding tensions.
In a letter, he said Iranians “harbor no enmity” toward people in the US, Europe or neighbouring countries.
He added that Iran distinguishes between governments and the people they represent, describing it as a deeply rooted principle rather than a temporary political position.

The official drew parallels with two previous rounds of negotiations held in the spring and winter of 2025, characterising them as deceptive.

The top US general says most of Iran‘s best air defenses are no longer factors, clearing the way for deeper air operations
In October 2024, Israel carried out a significant strike targeting Iran‘s missile production and air defenses, saying it could operate „with greater freedom in Iranian airspace.“
Israel conducted another preemptive strike in June 2025, destroying Iranian air defenses so its air forces could attack Iran‘s nuclear facilities. Days later, the US carried out Operation Midnight Hammer aimed at destroying major Iranian nuclear sites.
After that operation, Caine said it didn‘t look like Iran got a shot off at the strike package. „It appears that Iran‘s surface-to-air missile systems did not see us,“ he said.

Will the war with Iran boost Netanyahu’s prospects at the ballot box?
