UK sees lessons from Northern Ireland that could aid the fragile Gaza ceasefire process

The Irish Republican Army eventually agreed to put its arsenal “beyond use” by way of a secret process supervised by an international commission. Disarmament ran in parallel to efforts to resolve political disputes at the heart of the conflict, something that more than three decades of U.S.-led peace efforts in the Middle East have failed to accomplish.

It was slow going: The first batch of IRA weapons was decommissioned in 2001 and the last in 2005, seven years after the Good Friday Agreement. Several other British loyalist and Irish republican militant groups also disarmed as part of the process.

“The British might be able to counsel patience and pragmatism,” said Niall O Dochartaigh, a professor of political science at the University of Galway. “The IRA leadership had to be helped in various ways to make that argument (for disarmament) within the organization.

“Ultimately, decommissioning only happened in the Irish case once the IRA was satisfied that there was a political settlement bedded down,” he added.

Planning under way for international force in Gaza, say US advisers

Among the countries the U.S. is speaking to about contributing to the force are Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Qatar and Azerbaijan, said the adviser, speaking on condition of anonymity.

After Hamas killed seven men in Gaza City it accused of collaborating with Israel, the advisers said there were discussions to establish safe zones for civilians to prevent such incidents.

Hamas agrees to formation of ‘independent administration of technocrats’ to run Gaza

“The Hamas Movement is still awaiting the response of the Zionist enemy on the proposal presented by mediators to the movement on August 18, which Hamas and the Palestinian factions have accepted,” the group said in a statement shared on its official Telegram channel.

“In this context, Hamas reiterates its readiness to go for a comprehensive deal whereby all enemy prisoners held by the Resistance would be released, in exchange for an agreed-upon number of Palestinian prisoners held by the occupation, and as part of an agreement that ends the war on Gaza, ensures the full withdrawal of all occupation forces from the entire Gaza Strip, reopens the crossings to enter all Gaza’s essential needs, and begins the reconstruction process,” it said.

Meloni’s Game-Changing Proposal: NATO Protection for Ukraine Without Membership

“Sending unspecified military contingents, whether British or any other, is the most complex and possibly the least effective solution. I have said this, repeated it, and have also ruled out the possibility that Italian troops could be sent in this context,” Meloni told reporters on the sidelines of the European Union leaders’ meeting in Brussels on March 6.

Trump‘s new Ukraine adviser urged peace deal without NATO membership or restored borders

(November 27, 2024)

To convince Russian President Vladimir Putin to join peace talks, „President Biden and other NATO leaders should offer to put off NATO membership for Ukraine for an extended period in exchange for a comprehensive and verifiable peace deal with security guarantees,“ the pair wrote.

Meanwhile, Ukraine „would not be asked to relinquish the goal of regaining all its territory,“ but would agree to try to do so through diplomacy, with the recognition it probably won‘t happen until after Putin leaves office.

Pentagon says the number of US troops in Syria is much higher than previously reported

After learning of the fluctuation in number of troops, Fox News’ Pentagon correspondent Jennifer Griffin pressed Ryder about the correction to the number of troops and timing.

„This is more than double the number of troops that we’ve been told for quite some time. So, are we talking about this has been going on for months? For Years?“ Griffin asked. „Is this something that just happened this summer? We need a time frame.“

„Yeah, I think it would probably be fair to say at a minimum, months,“ Ryder said. „I’ll go back and look. But it’s…yeah, it’s been going on for a while.“

Tehran reverses course on Amir-Abdollahian‘s statements, confirms Shafaq News reports

Committee rapporteur Ali Nehmeh clarified to Shafaq News that „Iraq was taken by surprise by the timing of Iran‘s response and had no agreement with Tehran to allow Iranian drones or missiles through its airspace. The decision to halt air traffic came as a precautionary measure after the attack, with Iraq playing no role in Iran‘s actions.“

A government source familiar with the situation suggested that Tehran may have refrained from informing Baghdad of the attack‘s timing to prevent leaks, noting that Iran had notified several regional countries three days prior, as Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian stated.

Philosophy for Palestine

(November 1, 2023)

To focus, as we do here, on the actions of the Israeli state and the unflagging support it receives from the US and its allies, is neither to celebrate violence, nor to equivocate on the value of innocent lives. Civilian deaths, regardless of nationality, are tragic and unacceptable. Yet to act as though the history of violence began with Hamas’s attacks on October 7, 2023 is to display a reckless indifference to history as well as to both Palestinian and Israeli lives. In order for violence to stop, the conditions that produce violence must stop.

The blockade of Gaza has lasted 16 years; the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza has lasted 56 years; the dispossession of Palestinians of their lands and homes across historic Palestine has lasted three-quarters of a century, since the 1948 establishment of Israel as an ethno-supremacist state. It is not without reason that observers—including both international and Israeli human rights groups—now characterize Israel’s control over the land from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea as a system of apartheid.

A Palestinian Exile Champions an Arab Vision for Gaza

Mohammed Dahlan, an adviser to the president of the United Arab Emirates, outlined one under which Israel and Hamas would hand power to a new and independent Palestinian leader who could rebuild Gaza under the protection of an Arab peacekeeping force.

While such plans face steep challenges, the leaders of Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the Emirates are open to supporting processes that are part of efforts leading to a Palestinian state, said Mr. Dahlan, who also has close ties to Egypt’s president, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.

The coming US-Saudi nuclear deal: Keep it honest

(January 5, 2024)

In 1988, the Central Intelligence Agency did discover that Riyadh bought SS-2 medium-range missiles from China but only after the deal was sealed. In 2003, when China exported DF-21 ballistic missiles to the Kingdom, the CIA again found out and was even allowed to verify the missiles were not nuclear-capable, but only after the missiles were delivered.

Several years later, when intelligence finally leaked out that China secretly built missile factories for the Saudis, the Trump administration was mum on whether there was an intelligence failure and allowed speculation that it had blessed the transaction. Then, in 2020, when US intelligence confirmed China was helping the Kingdom mill uranium domestically, it did so, again only after the mining and milling were well underway.

This track record of studied inadvertence, then, brings us to the next worry: MBS wants Washington to green-light the Kingdom enriching uranium…

Well, we are not at war with anyone. And I don‘t know how tanks will help Ukraine. Maybe they will help, or maybe they will burn down just like in Iraq. Opinion: Trump and now Biden, too? It’s time to reform the classification process

According to media reports, in November 2022, Biden’s personal lawyers were clearing out remaining items at his private office at his pre-presidency think tank when they located approximately 10 documents containing classification markings. The lawyers appear to have notified White House counsel, who then notified the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). The documents were properly secured by the federal government the next morning. Additional reporting indicates that a second separate batch of records with classification markings were found in supplemental searches by Biden aides.

To be unequivocally clear, those documents never should have been in unauthorized locations. Period.

Of the 3,958 participants, 827 had what the study defines as a ‘completed pregnancy’. This term includes those who either had a baby (what the authors call a ‘live birth’), or those who suffered from a miscarriage or still birth (termed ‘pregnancy loss’ in the study). The rest were either still pregnant or a follow-up had not yet been made by the time the preliminary analysis had been released.

Of the 827 women who had a completed pregnancy, 104 had a miscarriage.
