Libya, Syria, Somalia and Yemen: Calculating the Millions-High Death Toll of America’s Post-9/11 Wars

(26.4.2018)

As Barbara Lee presciently warned her colleagues before she cast her lone dissenting vote in 2001, we have “become the evil we deplore.” But these wars have not been accompanied by fearsome military parades (not yet) or speeches about conquering the world. Instead they have been politically justified by “information warfare” to demonize enemies and fabricate crises, and then waged in a “disguised, quiet, media free” way, to hide their cost in human blood from the American public and the world.

After 16 years of war, about 6 million violent deaths, 6 countries utterly destroyed and many more destabilized, it is urgent that the American public come to terms with the true human cost of our country’s wars and how we have been manipulated and misled into turning a blind eye to them – before they go on even longer, destroy more countries, further undermine the rule of international law and kill millions more of our fellow human beings.

‚Everything changed‘: The human cost of 25 years of US wars

Less than a month after 9/11, the US invaded Afghanistan, launching what President George W Bush called the “War on Terror” – a series of seemingly endless wars and military campaigns spanning Afghanistan, Iraq and countries across the Middle East, South Asia and Africa.

According to the Cost of War project at Brown University’s Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs estimates that US-led wars since 2001 have directly or indirectly killed an estimated 4.5 to 4.7 million people – including approximately 940,000 direct deaths and 3.6 to 3.8 million indirect deaths from disease, malnutrition and health complications.

25 Years After 9/11, the War on Terror Has Left a More Dangerous World

On that ill-fated day, 25 years ago, the world stood united. The attack on the US was seen as a brutal assault on the very idea of a modern, open society. The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 1368, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) invoking Article 5 for the first and only time, and the global outpouring of support: Washington enjoyed empathy and credibility in spades.

The Global War on Terror (GWOT) was not seen as a US-led war but as one against a medieval ideology that used jihadi terror as an instrument…

9/11 Changed the World in Many Ways. It Also Spawned the Digital Media Era

The whole world, literally, was watching. Never before had more people seen the same news event at the same moment. An estimated two billion people or more—a third of the species—saw the attacks in real time or watched coverage in that day’s news reports. “If you think about the rise of terrorism since 9/11,” explained David Hazinski, the former head of the University of Georgia’s broadcast news initiative, five years after the attacks, “it’s almost proof that terrorist[s] recognize this is a global village. Now you have the potential to reach a two and a half billion audience for your act.”

Israeli settlers attack journalists, including CNN, on the anniversary of deadly West Bank beating

This attack on journalists comes just days after US Rep. Ro Khanna was detained by settlers near the village of Turmus Ayya in the West Bank. The village has a population of thousands of Palestinian-Americans who have come under repeated attack by settlers in the area.

Khanna visited the village to show solidarity with American citizens who have told CNN they feel forgotten by their government.

“I saw the arrogance in the eyes of those settlers, 21- and 22-year-olds with guns, laughing that they had detained us, the arrogance of those young IDF soldiers that my tax dollars are funding, having no respect for the fact that they were detaining Americans, no respect that there was an American congressperson in that bus, and laughing when our translator told them that there are Americans there and the American embassy is concerned,” Khanna told Reuters.

Immer dasselbe – in zeitlichen Schleifen, auratischen Wellen, historischen Episoden.

President Abbas: The Palestinian cause will remain the greatest test of the international system and its credibility

Excellencies, Heads of Delegations and Representatives of States and International Organizations

Ladies and Gentlemen

Today, in these difficult circumstances that our people are enduring, we commemorate the seventy-eighth anniversary of the Nakba, the catastrophe that is ongoing until this very day, and the crime of ethnic cleansing inflicted upon our Palestinian people. This crime, carried out by Zionist militias with the support of colonial powers, led to the uprooting of 950,000 Palestinians from their cities and villages, and their removal from the land of their ancestors, which they had inherited and inhabited for thousands of years, to be displaced and replaced, transforming them into a people of refugees, witness to the attempts to steal, falsify and erase their history and heritage.

This heinous crime, the Nakba, was accompanied by numerous massacres during which tens of thousands of our people were slaughtered and killed, and their cities and villages destroyed. More than 531 towns and villages, once vibrant with cultural, economic, social, and political life, were erased.

We will not leave, and we will not forget.

We, the Palestinian people and our refugees, did not emigrate from Palestine nor leave it voluntarily in 1948, as Israel and the Zionist movement have claimed, rather, we were forcibly and coercively expelled from it. The truth is that the Palestinian people rose up repeatedly to defend their historic homeland and their existence on their land. We still remember the Palestinian revolution of 1936–1939, but colonial powers provided the Zionists with every means and force necessary to seize the land of Palestine by force of arms.

The Zionist movement’s reliance on false narratives, mythology, and the infamous Balfour Declaration from the colonial era, along with the selective manipulation of fabricated historical events does not create rights, nor does it nullify the deeply rooted historical and legal rights of the Palestinian people to self-determination. It also does not negate international law or the Charter of the United Nations.

At a Moment of Chaos in Trump’s Washington, the Royals Come to Town

Presidents use state visits as an occasion to showcase the best of American culture — and, in this case, perhaps, subtly highlight the resilience of a people who, 250 years ago, rose up and wrested themselves from a king’s control.

The shooting over the weekend at the White House correspondents’ dinner has featured the darker side of the United States at a time when Mr. Trump is supposed to be showcasing America’s 250th birthday for the British royalty. For a moment over the weekend, it was unclear if King Charles would travel to Washington at all, before he reassessed and ultimately committed to his plans for a four-day visit to Washington, New York and Virginia.

Karl Liebknecht proklamiert am 09.11.1918 die Sozialistische Republik Deutschland (Auszug)

(Vossische Zeitung Nr. 576 vom 10. 11. 1918)

On October 30, 1918, the naval garrison of Wilhelmshaven resisted the order to launch the operation against the British forces. Arrested by their officers, the mutineers were then brought to Kiel, where the local dock crews and workers joined their struggle. The rebellion soon spread through the coastal town, with soldiers and workers creating a council to demand the release of mutineers, freedom of speech, and the immediate stop of “all military measures” against the movement. Fearing the outbreak of a revolution, members of the Reichstag hastily traveled to Kiel, where they promised to accept the Soldiers’ and Workers’ Council demands.

By the time the government representatives arrived in Kiel, anti-war and pro-democracy protests had already reached countless coastal towns and ports.
