The expansive and experimental effort is being used to conduct mass surveillance there, collecting and cataloging the faces of Palestinians without their knowledge or consent, according to Israeli intelligence officers, military officials and soldiers.
The technology was initially used in Gaza to search for Israelis who were taken hostage by Hamas during the Oct. 7 cross-border raids, the intelligence officials said.

There is little complaint from western politicians. Corsight’s complicity isn’t seen as an urgent matter.
Nor, for that matter, do most of these politicians give sufficient attention to Israel’s genocidal policies in Gaza.
Unmentioned by the Times is that Giora Eiland, a retired Israeli major general, serves on the board of directors of Corsight.
When Eiland joined the board in January 2021, Igal Raichelgauz, chairman and founder of the Cortica Group, stated, “We are excited to add Giora to the company board, we believe that due to his extensive experience in the national security field, Corsight will continue growing into new markets and territories and lead the face recognition market in Israel and in the world.” Corsight is a subsidiary of Cortica, a firm focused on artificial intelligence.
Eiland is a proponent of the ethnic cleansing of the occupied territory of Gaza.
No data is available on how often the cameras are used for this purpose. But the previously unreported practice highlights how efforts to make public housing safer are subjecting many of the 1.6 million Americans who live there — overwhelmingly people of color — to round-the-clock surveillance. If evicted, former tenants can face difficulties finding housing and employment for the rest of their lives.

Zu den deutschen Unterzeichnern gehören Birgit Sippel (SPD), Cornelia Ernst (Linke) und Dr. Patrick Breyer (Piratenpartei).
Einige Anwendungen künstlicher Intelligenz wären nach dem AI Act verboten. Dazu gehören zum Beispiel sogenannte Social-Scoring-Systeme. Auch wäre es illegal im öffentlichen Raum für die Strafverfolgung „biometrische Echtzeit-Fernidentifizierungssysteme“ zu verwenden, gemeint ist damit Videoüberwachung, die Personen am Gesicht oder am Gang identifizieren kann.
Hier sind allerdings Ausnahmen vorgesehen, etwa darf solche Software bei Terrorgefahr oder der Suche nach einem vermissten Kind eingesetzt werden. Generell lässt die Formulierung viele Lücken, so wäre der Einsatz von Gesichtserkennungssoftware außerhalb der Strafverfolgung weiterhin möglich. Auch wird nicht ausgeschlossen, Videoaufnahmen aus dem öffentlichen Raum im Nachhinein zu durchsuchen.

According to the document, some EU countries are pushing to add more exemptions for law enforcement.
These include the police being able to use real-time facial recognition (RTFR) to prevent any “substantial threat” to critical infrastructure. The exceptions join the list, which already includes searching for kidnapping victims and suspects of crime.
German liberal Svenja Hahn told Politico that negotiations are still ongoing, but the EU parliament will formally try to secure its position on the matter by the end of the year.

Despite its statements, the Interior Ministry plans to continue collecting fingerprints for its biometric ID database until 2025, at the earliest. Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked has proposed a three-year extension of the emergency order that provides for gathering fingerprints from citizens. The Knesset must vote on the measure.
The ministry’s Population and Immigration Authority says it needs about two years to buy and introduce facial recognition technology that will obviate the need for fingerprints. The agency is considering retaining the fingerprint database for victim identification in the event of a national disaster.

The City Council has passed legislation forcing the NYPD to explain how it uses facial recognition and other surveillance technologies to track New Yorkers.
The Public Oversight of Surveillance Technology Act was first introduced in March 2017 and had picked up 38 council sponsors ahead of today’s vote. If signed by Mayor Bill de Blasio, the measure would require the NYPD to report and evaluate its surveillance technologies and would compel the department to create a “surveillance impact and use policy.”
The criticism of the programs is also reigniting congressional efforts to craft federal regulations for the technology.
Amazon on Wednesday announced that it is placing a one-year moratorium on police use of its facial recognition technology, Rekognition.
„We’ve advocated that governments should put in place stronger regulations to govern the ethical use of facial recognition technology, and in recent days, Congress appears ready to take on this challenge,“ the company wrote in a blog post.

Critical Response Command (CRC) is one of the Department‘s first lines of defense against a terrorist-related attack. A permanent cadre of hand-selected police officers devoted to counterterrorism, CRC members are trained to respond swiftly, with sufficient expertise and force, to the most highly organized and heavily armed attacks. All CRC team members are trained in special weapons and long-range guns, explosive trace detection, radiological and nuclear awareness, biological and chemical weapons awareness, and are equipped with the skills to detect an impending attack and utilize the best possible response to an emerging situation. The team conducts daily counterterrorism deployments to critical infrastructure sites throughout New York City, saturating strategic locations with a uniform presence to disrupt and deter terrorist planning and hostile surveillance operations.

Domain Awareness System (DAS) is a powerful counterterrorism and policing tool jointly developed and built by the NYPD and Microsoft. As a central platform, DAS is used to aggregate data from internal and external closed-circuit television cameras, license plate readers, and environmental sensors, as well as 911 calls and other NYPD databases. DAS uses an interactive dashboard interface to display real-time alerts whenever a 911 call is received or a sensor is triggered.
