Instead, on Macron’s orders, Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne used a controversial clause in the Constitution, Article 49.3, to pass the bill.
The Republican Party are widely supportive of Macron’s reform bill, which raises the age of retirement from sixty-two to sixty-four, and issued instructions for its sixty-one Members of Parliament to vote against the motion. But nineteen of its MPs defied orders, adding to the dissent and disorder which has swept France in recent days, in parliament and on the street.

France saw a wave of strikes against Emmanuel Macron’s pension reforms on Thursday, causing disruption to trains, flights, schools and even hospitals. Polls show a majority of the French oppose the president’s measures – and analysts say maintaining public support of strikes will be crucial to unions’ chances of forcing a U-turn.
Protestors in France Saturday demonstrated for a seventh day against President Emmanuel Macron’s pension reform plan, which has been widely disputed across the country since his announcement of the plan in January.
According to the Confederation of Labor (CGT), a national federation of French trade unions, hundreds of thousands of employees, young people, and retirees went on strike and protested in the streets of French cities Friday against Macron’s plan.

Die französische Opposition konnte sich in der Nacht auf Mittwoch im Parlament gegen die Regierung durchsetzen. Weite Teile des Covid-Gesetzes wurden damit verhindert. Die gesetzliche Möglichkeit, den Grünen Pass in Frankreich wieder einzuführen, konnte damit abgewendet werden. Eine herbe Niederlage für Macron.

Am Abend sagte Mélenchon vor Anhängern, das Ergebnis sei „total unerwartet“. Er griff Macron scharf an: „Das ist ein totales Debakel der Präsidentenpartei.“ Sein Lager habe sein Ziel erreicht, Macron die parlamentarische Mehrheit zu entziehen.
Er erneuerte den Anspruch des von ihm geführten Linksbündnisses, das Land regieren zu wollen. „Alle Möglichkeiten sind in eurer Hand“, rief er vor seinen Zuhörern.
In a country as complex, large and diverse as theirs, a political system designed to concentrate authority in the hands of a single head of state maybe isn’t the best way of reflecting popular will. And perhaps, after 64 years, it’s time to try something new.
Dass es überhaupt so weit kommen könnte, ist dem links-außen Politiker Jean-Luc Mélenchon geschuldet. Mit dem links-grünen Wahlbündnis Nupes aus seiner Partei La France Insoumise, den Grünen, Sozialisten und Kommunisten hat er ein Gegengewicht zu Macrons Mitte geschaffen und einen extrem linken Gegenentwurf zur sozialliberalen Politik des Präsidenten präsentiert.
Das neue linke Bündnis aus Linkspartei, Sozialisten, Grünen und Kommunisten, angeführt von Linkspolitiker Jean-Luc Melenchon, kann auf deutlich mehr Sitze im Parlament hoffen. Sollte das Mitte-Lager des Präsidenten nur eine relative Mehrheit erreichen, wären der Präsident und die Regierung gezwungen, Unterstützung aus den anderen Lagern zu suchen.

L’invasion militaire de l’Ukraine par la Russie est un acte de guerre extrêmement grave que nous condamnons avec la plus grande fermeté.
C’est une violation inacceptable des principes du droit international dont Vladimir Poutine porte la responsabilité et qui fait peser le risque d’une guerre généralisée sur le continent.
À cette heure, nos pensées vont vers les populations civiles prises au piège et qui vivent dans la peur. L’urgence est à agir pour les protéger et exiger un cessez le feu immédiat et le retrait des troupes russes. La France doit porter cette exigence devant l’ONU.

Laut dem vorläufigen amtlichen Ergebnis kam Macrons Mitte-Bündnis landesweit auf 25,75 Prozent der Stimmen. Dies teilte das Innenministerium in Paris in der Nacht zu Montag mit.
Die vom Linkspolitiker Jean-Luc Mélenchon angeführte Allianz aus Linken, Kommunisten, Grünen und Sozialisten kam demnach auf 25,66 Prozent und hatte damit hauchdünn das Nachsehen. Der Unterschied betrug gerade einmal 21.442 Stimmen – bei rund 48,7 Millionen Wahlberechtigten.
Beaune believes that Mélenchon’s real intention is not to become a prime minister – as he has declared – in the next legislative election but to “crush the left and kill the Socialist Party and the Greens for the benefit of Jean-Luc Mélenchon alone”.

In the days following Macron’s re-election, Mélenchon and his team engineered what many had come to see as an impossible feat: a broad alliance of France’s deeply fractured left, united around a common policy platform and fielding a single candidate in each of France’s 577 constituencies.

Laut Innenministerium gingen am Samstag mehr als 140.000 Menschen auf die Straße, mehr als 18.000 davon in Paris.
Die Teilnehmerzahlen gingen in den vergangenen Wochen jedoch immer mehr zurück: Im Juli und August waren an mehreren Samstagen noch jeweils mehr als 200.000 Menschen auf die Straße gegangen.
