Throughout the weekend, Jean-Luc Mélenchon and his radical-left party, La France Insoumise, criticized the French government‘s crisis management of the protests on Saturday, October 17, and the violence surrounding them. As peaceful demonstrations where LFI supporters again turned out in strength overlapped with violence and looting, LFI continued its strategy of direct confrontation with the authorities, even at the risk of deepening its rift with the rest of the political class and some voters who hold them responsible for the unrest.

Je n’imagine pas cette campagne présidentielle comme le simple énoncé d’un programme, mais surtout comme un choix des principes de vie en société. Dans les analyses fournies à propos de notre succès, on parle de qui nous sommes, comment nous agissons, comment nous faisons campagne, nos capacités techniques à faire campagne… Beaucoup voient bien que nous sommes toute une équipe, au contraire de tous nos concurrents. Mais ce n’est pas ça la leçon essentielle de nos succès. Elle est ailleurs, dans la réponse à la question : dans quel état d’esprit est le peuple français. Que se passe-t-il dans la société dont nous sommes l’écho ? Aussi bien quand des jeunes acclament les députés Insoumis qui viennent les voir dans leur faculté ou leur lycée, ce qui est sans précédent.

The storming of the Bastille in 1789 marked a major turning point in the French Revolution and became a symbol of the people’s resistance to royal authority.
The leader of France Unbowed and his allies have been accused by their opponents of stoking unrest and manipulating young people for political gain. Mélenchon has rejected these criticisms, underlining that despite the fact that his party supports the protests, they were independently launched by students.
The student and professional union coalition has called for another day of protests and strikes on 13 October, with a further major mobilisation planned for 17 October.

Pour aboutir, elle doit recueillir au moins 1 million de signatures dans au moins 7 pays de l’UE. Récemment, des initiatives initiatives européennes pour garantir le droit à l’avortement partout en Europe et pour interdire les thérapies de conversion contre les personnes LGBTI ont récolté suffisamment de signatures pour contraindre la Commission européenne à se saisir du sujet. Nous pouvons faire de même pour la Palestine !
Face à l’horreur, ne détournons pas les yeux. Unissons-nous pour demander justice pour la Palestine et la fin à la complicité de l’UE dans le génocide !

Anfang des Monats trafen Zehntausende in der Stadt nordöstlich von Paris zusammen. Trotz der brennenden Sonne waren sie gekommen, um den Linken Mélenchon beim Start seines Wahlkampfs für die Präsidentschaftswahl 2027 zu erleben.
Es war eine eindrucksvolle Demonstration der Wahlkampfmaschinerie, die Mélenchon seit seiner ersten Kandidatur 2012 aufgebaut hat. Damals hatte er die Parti Socialiste (PS) verlassen, um links von ihr seinen eigenen Weg zu gehen.

On Thursday, expressions of support came almost entirely from LFI and the far-left. For the anti-capitalist NPA, Olivier Besancenot expressed his “solidarity with Rima Hassan” on X, as did Nathalie Arthaud, the spokesperson for the Trotskyist Lutte ouvrière (LO).
Two former LFI members, Alexis Corbière and Clémentine Autain, also spoke out. “A member of the European Parliament placed in police custody for a retweet? Freedom of expression applied selectively is not the Republic,” said the latter. “The disproportionate repression of expressions of support for Palestine is clear, it must stop,” wrote the former.
On Friday, a handful of elected representatives from other parties began to join the chorus of criticism, including the communist MP Elsa Faucillon, who deplored a “relentless campaign revealing the mobilisation of the state apparatus against any solidarity with Palestine” and the Green MP Benjamin Lucas, who denounced “double standards”. Another Green MP, Sandrine Rousseau, expressed her “support” for Rima Hassan.
More surprisingly, the socialist MEP Chloé Ridel, a close ally of the Socialist Party leader Olivier Faure, also commented: “Everything about the police custody imposed on the European Member of Parliament Rima Hassan is disproportionate and violates her parliamentary immunity, whatever our disagreements. Was Louis Sarkozy [editor‘s note, son of former president Nicolas Sarkozy and a political commentator] placed in custody when he said about Palestinians ‘let them all die’?”

French Prime Minister François Bayrou used special executive powers on Monday to force his government’s 2025 budget through parliament without a vote. France‘s hard-left France Unbowed (LFI) party has said it will put forward a no-confidence motion which is likely to take place on Wednesday.
