In 2015, Iran proved the peaceful nature of its nuclear program to the world by signing the multilateral nuclear agreement, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) — with six world powers.

However, Washington’s unilateral withdrawal in 2018 and its subsequent re-imposition of sanctions against Tehran left the future of the deal in limbo.

In 2019, Iran started to roll back the limits it had accepted under the JCPOA after the other parties failed to live up to their commitments.

‘This is the moment for peace, progress, equality’: UK Prime Minister

While the Universal Declaration of Human Rights inspires him, from his student days to being a prime minister, because it speaks of equal rights and peace, he said that notion “could seem like a distant hope today” amid a landscape of war, poverty, climate change or pandemics.

“My message today is this: We are returning the UK to responsible global leadership because I think the international system can be better,” he said. “This is the moment to reassert fundamental principles…to recommit to the UN…to work together for peace, progress and equality.”

Outlining a path towards those goals, he first pointed to ongoing wars, expressing London’s support for Ukraine. Calling on Israel to “step back from the brink” to provide space for a diplomat settlement, he said an immediate ceasefire is needed in Gaza, where the suffering continues to grow. Diplomacy is the only way to break the cycle of violence, he said.

Concluding his address, Mr. Abbas said that “while we recognize the State of Israel, Israel does not recognize us”.

Secretary-General‘s remarks at the Opening of the General Debate of the Seventy-ninth Session of the General Assembly ..

Many have said that the differences and divisions today are just too great.

That it is impossible for us to come together for the common good.

You proved that is not true.

The Summit of the Future showed that with a spirit of dialogue and compromise, we can join forces to steer our world to a more sustainable path.

It is not the end.

It is a start of a journey, a compass in the whirlwind.

Let‘s keep going.

Let‘s move our world towards less impunity and more accountability …. less inequality and more justice … less uncertainty and more opportunity.

The people of the world are looking to us – and succeeding generations will look back on us.

Let them find us on the side of the United Nations Charter … on the side of our shared values and principles … and on the right side of history.

Israeli attacks on Gaza, Lebanon dominate first day of UNGA

What we’ve seen so far is something very clear and that’s real urgency in all of the speeches that we have heard.

Urgency about the issues that are facing the world right now, particularly the urgency of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and Israel’s continued bombardment of the Gaza Strip. But now also something that perhaps a week ago world leaders weren’t expecting, but they are forced to talk about now. And that’s Israel’s attacks on Lebanon.
