Beteiligung der Marine an EUNAVFOR Aspides im Roten Meer soll fortgeführt werden

Am 8. Oktober 2026 haben die parlamentarischen Beratungen über die Fortsetzung der Beteiligung bewaffneter deutscher Streitkräfte an der von der Europäischen Union geführten Operation European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR) Aspides begonnen.

Daten und Fakten

– Die personelle Obergrenze soll unverändert bis zu 350 Soldatinnen und Soldaten betragen.
– Das Mandat soll bis zum 31. Oktober 2027 verlängert werden.
– EUNAVFOR Aspides („Schilde“) ist eine Operation der Europäischen Union. Der Einsatz wurde am 8. Februar 2024 von der EU beschlossen. Die Bundesregierung sprach sich für eine deutsche Beteiligung am 16. Februar 2024 aus und das Parlament gab am 23. Februar 2024 grünes Licht.
– Der deutsche Beitrag zum Einsatz umfasst derzeit Stabspersonal im Hauptquartier im griechischen Larissa, sowie auf dem Führungsschiff der Operation. Darüber hinaus erfolgen regelmäßige Einsatzflüge zur Bereitstellung luftgestützter Seeraumüberwachung und die grundsätzliche Möglichkeit zur Beteiligung mit seegehenden Einheiten.

Einsatzgebiet

Das Einsatzgebiet von EUNAVFOR Aspides umfasst die internationalen Gewässer im Roten Meer, im Golf von Aden, im Arabischen Meer, im Golf von Oman und im Persischen Golf. Im Bereich der Straße von Hormus gibt es allerdings ein gesondert ausgewiesenes Einsatzgebiet mit besonderen Regelungen. Dort gibt es für Aspides derzeit keine Befugnisse für das Minenräumen oder den Schutz von Schiffen.

The window to prevent a disaster was closing. He recommended that the Israeli government grant Hamas economic concessions to avert conflict. His message, according to one former Israeli official later briefed on the visit, was: If you don’t change course, Gaza is going to blow up in your faces.

Kamel didn’t provide Israeli officials with a date or specific information on what turned out to be a multipronged attack on Israel less than two weeks later, on October 7. And it’s not clear exactly with whom he met. The Egyptian plane remained on the ground in Israel for 67 minutes, according to an Israeli-airport-authority flight log, before returning to Cairo. But a person who said they had spoken with Sheikh Mohammed and another person who said they had been briefed by someone on the call between the two leaders told The New York Times that the Emirati leader had secretly reported to Mr. Netanyahu that Hamas was considering a major attack.

The warning from the Emirati leader, however, never reached the leaders of Israel’s security establishment, according to five former senior Israeli officials.

At least two people were killed on Wednesday when the town of Mayfadoun was rocked by an explosion amid ongoing Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon that have included airstrikes, artillery barrages and ground incursions.

Lebanon’s official National News Agency (NNA) attributed the explosion to a “suspicious object” left behind from a previous Israeli attack.

When the Ayatollah Said No to Nukes

A few Iranian sources have previously pointed to a fatwa by the Islamic Republic’s first supreme leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, prohibiting chemical weapons as the explanation for why Iran did not deploy these weapons during the war with Iraq. But no details have ever been made public on when and how Khomeini issued such a fatwa, so it has been ignored for decades.

Now, however, the wartime chief of the Iranian ministry responsible for military procurement has provided an eyewitness account of Khomeini’s ban not only on chemical weapons, but on nuclear weapons as well. In an interview with me in Tehran in late September, Mohsen Rafighdoost, who served as minister of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) throughout the eight-year war, revealed that he had proposed to Khomeini that Iran begin working on both nuclear and chemical weapons — but was told in two separate meetings that weapons of mass destruction are forbidden by Islam.
