Russia Risks Reputation Of Its Weapons Systems With Iran Air Defense Delivery

(August 7, 2024)

The report did not specify the exact type of equipment Russia is delivering. Iran is interested in acquiring the long-range, strategic S-400 Triumf air defense missile system. Tehran acquired advanced S-300PMU-2 systems from Moscow in 2016 and also operates short and medium-range Russian Buk and Tor systems. (…)

Israel trained for striking S-300s for over a decade before the Isfahan strike. Its air force trained against Greece’s S-300PMU-1 based on the island of Crete in 2013, gaining valuable insights about its capabilities and potential vulnerabilities it could one day exploit against a Syrian or Iranian system.

Whether you go to the beach with it, carry potatoes or mount a machine gun on it for war, keeping it in the ‘garage’ is your right.”

So that photo all but rules out the „nearby Ukrainian 5V55K missile launch“ narrative. The crater is too small and there is no fragmentation damage on the tractor and cart consistent with a „5Zh93“ warhead in airburst or impact modes.

S300 warheads are different for AD & ground. AD uses fragmentation & proximity fuse: it means the tires you see in the photo would have been shredded & there would be no crater. It‘s a huge hole, so if not a cruise, a ground-attack S300. Only Russia uses those.

Only missile converted from S-300 to ballistic one could cause destruction like in Poland – Oleksiy Hetman

(17 November, 2022)

„If we assume that the rocket completely deteriorated and lost electronic control, then if it fell to the ground, it would also not have been able to explode. The missile does not explode from detonation, it explodes from the command of electronic equipment located inside. The Russians turned such S-300 missiles into ballistic missiles with a regular charge instead of metal balls and cubes. Such a missile can fall to the ground and explode. This missile has been processed from an anti-aircraft missile to a ballistic one. In Ukraine, such processed missiles were not made,“ Hetman stressed.

Moscow’s S-300 Double Bluff in Syria

The biggest mystery about the Russian military S-300 transfer to Syria is the sighting of only four launchers. Combined with some of the other issues involved, it seems that Moscow has used the S-300 system as a double bluff: its transfer to the SAA will not result in deterring the Israeli Air Force from conducting future strikes in Syria, nor will a full-fledged joint Russia-Syria air-defense system emerge.
