“Erfahrungsgemäß muss bis zum schriftlichen Einbringen der Vollmitgliedschaft in der Generalversammlung der Vereinten Nationen jede Sekunde damit gerechnet werden, dass P.L.O., Fatah, die “Autonomiebehörde”, ihr Chefdiplomat Saeb Erekat und Präsident Mahmud Abbas, entgegen all ihrer Beschlüsse, Ankündigungen, Versprechen, etc, die Sache Palästinas wieder verraten.”
Genau so kam es heute. Weder kündigte Abbas in seiner Rede den Antrag auf Vollmitgliedschaft im Sicherheitsrat an, noch einen Antrag in der entscheidenden Generalversammlung. In den Bedingungen für eine irgendwann Mitte 2018 vorgeschlagene “Friedenskonferenz” taucht die U.N. Vollmitgliedschaft Palästinas nicht auf. Stattdessen bot Abbas Israel, allen palästinensischen Beschlüssen zum Trotz, auch noch an, während irgendwelcher neuen “Verhandlungen” keinen internationalen Organisationen “beizuwohnen” (“joining”). Das bedeutet effektiv auch den Verzicht darauf, die Besatzungsmacht endlich wegen Bruch des Völkerrechts vor dem Internationalen Strafgerichtshof zu verklagen.
Im Gipfel der Erbärmlichkeit warf sich Abbas in seiner Rede am Ende auch noch dem Sicherheitsrat zu Füßen und bezeichnet den Sicherheitsrat mit seinen Atommächten als “höchstes Gremium..der Völker der Welt”:

Racist National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir appears to threaten Hadash MK Ayman Odeh with impeachment, tweeting out a picture of him with the message “next in line.” The photo shared by Ben Gvir shows Odeh holding the arm of Khalida Jarrar, a legislator and senior figure in the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, as she flashes a victory sign following her release from prison in September 2021. On last December 27, Jarrar was arrested again by occupation forces.
The far-right leader’s message comes hours after members of the Knesset House Committee overwhelmingly supported a motion to expel Hadash-Ta’al party lawmaker Ofer Cassif, voting 14-2 to advance his impeachment to the Knesset plenum following two days of contentious debate. During Tuesday’s debate on Cassif’s impeachment, Hadash-Ta’al MK Ahmad Tibi warned the Communist lawmaker’s ouster would “set a precedent” allowing for the impeachment of “all the Arab MKs in the Knesset.” “This is a black day for the Knesset,” Tibi declares following the vote.

Israeli politician Ofer Cassif announced his support for the Gaza genocide lawsuit against Israel at the ICJ, and is now facing an attempt to get him kicked out of parliament. He explains why he did it.
Forer announced the move after Cassif signed a petition in support of the South African case against the Jewish state and claimed that members of the government were calling for ethnic cleansing and even genocide.
Eighty-seven MKs subsequently signed on to the initiative, passing the minimum threshold required for lawmakers to remove a colleague who expresses “support for an armed struggle by an enemy state, or a terrorist organization against the State of Israel.”
All Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia and Egypt, have issued many statements condemning Israel‘s assault on Gaza, but they did not take any further action. Saudi Arabia and the Arab League waited for more than a month of onslaught in Gaza to hold a summit in Riyadh to discuss the issue.
The summit decided to break the siege and blockade, but Arab countries never turned this resolution into action. Instead, Egypt obeyed Israeli commands and refused to give access to move injured civilians for treatment outside of Gaza unless Israel approved their names.
But something else is happening that is just as important: Palestine is being officially defended by the Global South. South Africa has taken the lead by launching the case for genocide at the International Court of Justice in the Hague.
Palestine, at the same time, is reemerging as a global cause, just as was the case in the fight against apartheid in South Africa. The composition of South Africa’s team of lawyers says it all: multi-ethnic, male, female, Irish, British, South African. There was no Palestinian officially with them in the group. And yet, a day after the hearing ended, there were massive demonstrations in 45 countries – but not in Egypt, Saudi Arabia or even Algeria.
Although the Palestinian people believe in the justice of their cause and are fully aware of the injustices and crimes committed against them, they still harbour legitimate fears, given their bitter experiences with the international community and the United Nations Security Council. Many of us have doubts about the seriousness of the international community – especially the US – when it comes to ending, or even mitigating, Israel’s crimes against us.
Although the final judgment of the ICJ will likely take years, we hope the court will make a quick decision on a ceasefire. But this hope dulls when we realise that implementing the ruling depends on the Security Council, where the US can veto any resolution against Israel. This has allowed Israel to long behave with impunity and in disregard of the Geneva Conventions.
Brazil´s President Lula Da Silva has announced his country’s support for South Africa’s case against Israel in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) alleging genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza. The announcement came just hours before the ICJ opens the first session of the hearing in The Hague.
The Republic of Cuba has been a State Party to the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide since 1953 and, in accordance with the commitments undertaken therein, has the obligation to prevent and punish genocide.
In this regard, expresses its support for the claim of the Republic of South Africa to initiate proceedings against Israel in the International Court of Justice, in connection with the violations by that country of its obligations under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

Bolivia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Monday that it is joining the case filed by South Africa before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against Israel for committing genocide crimes in the Gaza Strip.
Ayman Safadi on Thursday said that Amman will be preparing the necessary legal documents in consultation with legal experts to support South Africa’s file, and will also coordinate with Arab and Islamic countries on the matter.

Turkish foreign ministry spokesperson Oncu Keceli said in a statement that Ankara welcomes the South African case, which says Israel has violated its obligations under the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

Malaysia’s foreign ministry said the petition also included a request for the ICJ to indicate provisional or short-term measures ordering Israel to stop its military campaign in the besieged territory, and to ensure Israel’s compliance with its obligations under the Genocide Convention.

The letter was released days after South Africa filed its claim, asking the ICJ to declare that Israel has breached its obligations under the Genocide Convention, to which it is a party.
The death toll in Gaza has reached at least 22,313, with at least 57,296 people wounded and thousands feared dead under rubble.
The hearings will be devoted to the Request for the indication of provisional measures contained in South Africa’s Application. In its Request, South Africa asks the Court to indicate provisional measures in order to “protect against further, severe and irreparable harm to the rights of the Palestinian people under the Genocide Convention” and “to ensure Israel’s compliance with its
obligations under the Genocide Convention not to engage in genocide, and to prevent and to punish genocide”.

Beyond material progress and architectural marvels that rival ancient wonders, a truly progressive state is marked by its commitment to accountability and justice – a domain where some established democracies have faltered.
After enduring a harrowing 85 days of bombardment resulting in nearly 22,000 killed, including more than 8,000 children and 6,000 women, 1.9 million displaced and the collapse of the health infrastructure, South Africa, a signatory of the Genocide Convention has finally called upon the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to examine the crisis.
This long-awaited step reflects a crucial recognition of the international community‘s role in conflict resolution and human rights protection.
By the 1920s, Lemkin was formulating the concepts and laws that were articulated in his best-known book, Axis Rule in Occupied Europe (1944). His unpublished manuscripts reveal that he saw colonialism as an integral part of a world history of genocide.
Those manuscripts covered an extremely wide range of cases where European colonial powers were responsible for mass killing, from the Spanish conquest of the Americas in the sixteenth century and the slaughter of indigenous peoples in Australia and New Zealand to the German massacre of the Hereros in Namibia a few decades earlier.
Eylon Levy, an official in the Israeli prime minister’s office, on Tuesday accused South Africa of “giving political and legal cover” to the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas that triggered Israel’s campaign.
“The state of Israel will appear before the International Court of Justice at the Hague to dispel South Africa’s absurd blood libel,” he said.

Israeli forces killed 207 Palestinians and wounded 338 people over 24 hours in Gaza, the Palestinian health ministry said.
That brought the total number of Palestinians killed in Gaza since 7 October to 22,185, and the wounded to at least 57,00o.

South Africa initiated proceedings against Israel in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Friday, according to a press release from the ICJ.
Article 7
1. There are established as principal organs of the United Nations: a General Assembly, a Security Council, an Economic and Social Council, a Trusteeship Council, an International Court of Justice and a Secretariat.

Article 94
1. Each Member of the United Nations undertakes to comply with the decision of the International Court of Justice in any case to which it is a party.
2. If any party to a case fails to perform the obligations incumbent upon it under a judgment rendered by the Court, the other party may have recourse to the Security Council, which may, if it deems necessary, make recommendations or decide upon measures to be taken to give effect to the judgment.

Article 96
– The General Assembly or the Security Council may request the International Court of Justice to give an advisory opinion on any legal question.
– Other organs of the United Nations and specialized agencies, which may at any time be so authorized by the General Assembly, may also request advisory opinions of the Court on legal questions arising within the scope of their activities.

Allegations of war crimes by both Israel and by Palestinian militant groups in territories occupied by Israel in 1967 are already under investigation at the International Criminal Court, which is independent of the U.N. But the impact of that investigation is unclear because Israel is not a member nation of the I.C.C. and does not recognize its jurisdiction.
Israel is, however, a signatory of the Genocide Convention, along with South Africa, which paved the way for the case at the International Court of Justice, also known as the World Court.
South Africa and Israel are both parties to the Genocide Convention, according to the ICJ, which is also known as the World Court and is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations.
The filing, made on December 29, alleges that Israel has through its state organs, agents and affiliated entities consistently violated its obligations under the Genocide Convention.
The application also draws special attention to Israel’s failure to prevent and prosecute direct and public incitement to genocide since October 7, 2023.
Shockingly, more than 1.9 million individuals, constituting 85% of Gaza’s population, have been forcibly evacuated in the wake of orders from the Israel Occupation Forces (IOF).
According to the statement, Israel’s conduct towards the Palestinians in Gaza “is in violation of its obligations under the Genocide Convention,” the government in Pretoria said. They also accused Israel of having “failed to prevent genocide” and “failed to prosecute the direct and public incitement to genocide” since October 7.
