Large crowds took to the streets across Italy on Friday, October 30, in response to a call from the Unione Sindacale di Base (USB), a grassroots trade union that had organized a general strike in the public sector. Although many civil servants did not walk out and public transportation was only minimally disrupted, the streets and squares of major cities were packed with demonstrators, reflecting a rising tide of social discontent nationwide.

Thousands of protesters marched through Rome, Italy, on Friday, 30 October, during a general strike called by the left-wing Unione Sindacale di Base (USB) trade union.
Turnout at âthe protests stood at â320,000 ânationwide, with about 70,000 in Paris, â the interior ministry said Saturday â fewer than in previous protests.
However, the youth trade union coalition put the number at nearly half a million, including 200,000 in Paris.
Some 70,000 police and gendarmes were deployed across the country, and Paris marches were rerouted to the outskirts of the capital.
More nationwide protests from the Yellow Vests movement were also underway in France on Saturday, in what has been billed as theâŻthird act of demonstrations, following earlier protests on October 17 and 24.âŻStudents and some unions are also expected to join.
French Interior Ministry said 320,000 people were protesting across the country on Saturday, with 70,000 turning up in Paris.

A top Arab political leader said he is prepared to help the opposition bloc led by Gadi Eisenkot form a minority government in order to oust Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
âIf they want us to help, we will be there in order to help,â Ahmad Tibi, the head of the Joint Listâs bloc, told CNN in an interview. âWe want to support the candidate of the opposition. It is important. It should be done.â
Tibi said his coalition is not looking to join an Eisenkot-led government and would not be seeking any ministerships.
Leader of the Democrats party, Yair Golan, has said that the United Arab List could be part of the governing coalition in Israel, if the opposition bloc manages to oust Netanyahu.
âMansour Abbas [leader of the United Arab List] could be part of the next coalition. I see no issue with that. After all, Netanyahu himself wanted him in a coalition,â Golan told Israelâs Channel 12.
The party gained four seats in the 120-member Knesset compared with its current representation.
Golan‘s party entered election night projected to secure between eight and ten seats in the 26th Knesset, according to final pre-election polling published ahead of the vote.
The Central Elections Committee‘s preliminary results put Netanyahu‘s bloc at 53 seats in the 120-member Knesset, against 48 for the opposition bloc led by former military chief Gadi Eisenkot. The Arab-led Ra‘am and Joint List parties are projected to win a combined 19 seats. At least 61 seats are required for a majority.
With about 85% of the vote counted as of Wednesday afternoon, the Central Elections Committee‘s official results released Wednesday projected Israel‘s two main Arab parties, Raâam and the Joint List, to win seven and 12 seats, respectively.

In theory, this means Netanyahu could continue as caretaker prime minister for months and even years, with most of his powers.
This has actually previously happened: Netanyahu himself holds the record for length of time serving as a caretaker prime minister, for a year and a half between December 2018 and May 2020.
In that period, three indecisive elections were held, until Netanyahu finally formed a unity government with his main political rival.
In a post on the US social media platform X, Ben-Gvir said Netanyahu had âpromised the US administration that, following the election, he would form a unity government with Gadi Eisenkot â and without Ben-Gvir.â
His remarks came after newspaper Israel Hayom reported that US President Donald Trump is pushing for a unity government involving Netanyahu and his main challenger Eisenkot, with the Israeli premier reportedly signaling in closed-door talks that he would be willing to abandon his far-right allies to advance the Abraham Accords to normalize ties with Arab countries, including with Saudi Arabia.
Israelâs far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has urged right-wing voters to cast their ballots, claiming that unprecedented turnout among Palestinian citizens of Israel could help bring a âdangerous left-wing governmentâ to power.
âDo not despair! It is still possible to win,â Smotrich said in a post on X.
