Mélenchon declares ‘Bastille retaken’ after major student rally in Paris
The storming of the Bastille in 1789 marked a major turning point in the French Revolution and became a symbol of the people’s resistance to royal authority.
The leader of France Unbowed and his allies have been accused by their opponents of stoking unrest and manipulating young people for political gain. Mélenchon has rejected these criticisms, underlining that despite the fact that his party supports the protests, they were independently launched by students.
The student and professional union coalition has called for another day of protests and strikes on 13 October, with a further major mobilisation planned for 17 October.

From France to Italy, Belgium to Greece, student protests spread across Europe
The unrest is not being organised as a single Europe-wide movement. The grievances are different from country to country, but the concerns are strikingly similar. Students are increasingly questioning whether governments are putting enough money into education at a time when schools and universities are struggling with staff shortages, infrastructure problems and higher costs.
France’s student protests highlight a debt crisis that could spill over to the rest of Europe
Worries about a potential debt crisis in France boiled over last week, leading to a selloff in French bonds and a sharp rise in yields.
The spread between French and German bond yields expanded to its widest level since 2012. That difference in yields means investors are demanding much higher returns to hold debt from France compared with Germany, which is deemed a safer alternative.
The French bond rout has sparked fears of spillovers to other high-yield European debt markets, with some analysts drawing parallels with the eurozone debt crisis of the early 2010s.
Man habe sämtliche aktuelle Themen besprochen.
Were Oct. 7 records altered? New allegations target Netanyahu‘s inner circle
The appeal by the October Council families follows a July 2024 report by Nadav Eyal in ynet and Yedioth Ahronoth revealing that Maj. Gen. (res.) Avi Gil, Netanyahu‘s military secretary at the time of the massacre, had contacted the attorney general to express concerns that attempts had been made to alter official transcripts in the Prime Minister‘s Office during the war.
Israelis grapple with reports that Netanyahu was warned of Oct. 7 attacks years ago
(October 6, 2026)
LONSDORF: NPR has spoken to four people in the Middle East with direct knowledge of such warnings, which the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, the New York Times and the Atlantic first reported, confirming much of the reporting that Netanyahu is trying to deny. The ripple effects of those reports are playing out as Israelis are preparing to head to the polls in less than three weeks.
