EU Revives Plan to Ban Private Messaging

(August 4, 2025)

Italy, Spain, and Hungary have been in favor of mandatory chat scanning from the start. France could tip the balance since blocking the plan requires four countries representing at least 35 percent of the EU’s population. Paris has moved from tentative support to saying it could “basically support the proposal.”

Government shutdown live updates as up to 750,000 federal workers face furlough

– The federal government began to shut down overnight after Democrats and Republicans failed to come to an agreement to extend government funding ahead of the Oct. 1, 2025, deadline.

– As many as 750,000 government workers could be furloughed, according to the Congressional Budget Office, and they will not be paid until Congress appropriates funding and the shutdown ends. Workers deemed to be essential will stay on the job, although they will likewise not be paid until Congress reaches a funding deal.

– Republicans and Democrats are blaming each other for the impasse.

The Trumpanyahu “Peace” Plan, And Other Notes

The onus is on the party committing genocide to stop committing genocide. The onus is not on the victims of the genocide to sign agreements in the hope of saving themselves from the genocide. This is obvious to anyone who isn’t a psychopath.

(…)

I didn’t come to where I’m at ideologically from reading Lenin or talking to Marxists, I got here because I did a lot of inner work and had some transformative experiences and came out the other side with a deep love for this beautiful planet and for the strange naked ape mutants who people it, and with a yearning to help create a healthy world. I just kinda felt my way through the human experience as the barefoot hippie earth mama that I am, and it carried me to a clear intuitive understanding that the western empire must end and that capitalism cannot carry our species into the future.

Looking back: The Madleen

As the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) nears the Gaza coastline, Al Jazeera takes a look at some of the past flotillas.
The Madleen

The Madleen was launched by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) on June 9, 2025.

Among the activists on board were Sweden’s Greta Thunberg, Brazil’s Thiago Avila and French MEP Rima Hassan.

All three are also on board this current GSF.
The Madleen was intercepted by the Israeli military about 185km (100 nautical miles) from Gaza, in international waters.

After the interception, activists on the boat were detained by Israel. Some were instantly deported, while others were held in detention before their deportation.

Looking back: The Handala

As the Global Sumud Flotilla nears the Gaza coastline, Al Jazeera takes a look back at some of the past flotillas.
The Handala

Israeli forces stormed the Gaza-bound flotilla, which was carrying aid to starving Palestinians, on July 26, 2025.

Activists on the Handala came from Australia, France, Iraq, Italy, Morocco, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Tunisia, the UK and the US.

As the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla – the largest initiative of its kind – is expected to enter a high-risk zone in the Mediterranean where Israeli forces may attempt to intercept it as they did before.

The flotilla, carrying urgently needed food, medicine, and humanitarian supplies, set sail after nearly two years of Israel’s relentless attacks on Gaza and 18 years of an illegal blockade that has left Palestinians in Gaza deliberately starved and deprived of essentials, as part of Israel‘s ongoing unlawful occupation of the Palestinian territory.

The persistent inaction of states in the face of Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip has forced activists from across the world to take peaceful measures to break the siege.

States have a responsibility to guarantee the flotilla’s safe passage. They must step up pressure to protect the flotilla and demand an end of Israel‘s genocide, and of its unlawful blockade once and for all.

Italian navy to stop assisting Gaza flotilla despite fears of Israeli attack

(September 30, 2025)

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni later reiterated her call for flotilla members to immediately stop their mission, warning that a confrontation with Israel could derail diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza.

„Many would be happy to disrupt a peace plan pushed by US President Donald Trump, Meloni said in a statement. „I fear that the flotilla‘s attempt to breach the Israeli naval blockade could provide a pretext for this.“

Gaza-bound flotilla organizer says Israeli navy failed in interception attempt as ships near Gaza

Israeli warships then tried to penetrate the flotilla from multiple sides to disperse it, but that all ships maneuvered and stayed on course, he said, describing the interception attempts as a test of the flotilla’s resolve: “Even if you stop 47 vessels, the 48th will continue on to Gaza.”

Earlier in the day, a large warship was spotted near the Gaza-bound humanitarian aid flotilla as its organizers reported a state of high alert at sea.

Contact has been restored with the Alma ship after being lost for a short time, said an Al Jazeera correspondent on board the flotilla.

According to the correspondent, an Israeli vessel came within just five feet of the Alma, and jammed all of its communication systems, as well as its engine, rendering them inoperative.

He added that participants on board the Alma threw their phones into the sea in line with the established security protocols.

Israeli attacks kill at least 45 in Gaza as ceasefire plan hangs in balance

The continuous bombardment of Gaza City has razed the territory’s largest urban centre, killing dozens of people daily, destroying numerous residential buildings and schools, and forcing tens of thousands of Palestinians to flee to an unknown fate to the south, often targeted on the way.

Meanwhile, 11 unidentified bodies were buried in a mass grave inside al-Shifa Hospital courtyard, west of Gaza City. The medical complex, the largest in the besieged enclave, has been under constant Israeli fire in recent days.

Must watch: Netanyahu reveals to Hebrew audiences after the press event where Trump revealed the 20-point plan to end the war on Gaza, that he has no intention of withdrawing Israeli troops from Gaza – “No way, that’s not happening.”

(September 30, 2025)

He said:
“This is a historic visit. Instead of Hamas isolating us, we turned the tables and isolated Hamas. Now the entire world, including the Arab and Muslim world, is pressuring Hamas to accept the terms we set together with President Trump: to release all our hostages, both living and deceased, while the IDF remains in most of the Strip. Who would have believed this? After all, people constantly say, the IDF should withdraw… No way, that’s not happening.”
