Earthquake strikes Tokyo ahead of Trump’s visit to Japan
President Trump’s trip to Japan started with a bang – a magnitude-5.1 earthquake centered near the golf course where he and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe are set to play golf Sunday.
The temblor, which rattled Tokyo just hours before Trump’s arrival, briefly halted nearby bullet trains, but did not derail the leaders’ plans for their first meeting of the four-day visit, which will take place at the Mobara Country Club in Chiba.
Sudan military chief meets Egypt‘s Sisi on first trip since ouster
The head of Sudan’s ruling military council visited neighboring Egypt on Saturday – his first trip abroad since the army overthrew former president Omar al-Bashir last month after mass protests against his rule.
Military Council maintains Sudanese troops in Yemen
The statement came after a short visit to Jeddah on Thursday by the Vice-President of the Transitional Military Council, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo (Hemetti), during which he met the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman.

U.S. President Donald Trump and his wife, Melania, landed in Japan on Saturday on a largely ceremonial visit meant to showcase strong ties with Tokyo even as trade tensions loom.
John Bolton Says North Korea Missile Testing Violates UN Resolutions
National security adviser John Bolton said Saturday that sanctions against North Korea must be kept in place after the rogue country violated a United Nations Security Council resolution when it test-fired short-range missiles last week. The Associated Press reported that Bolton, speaking in Tokyo ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump’s state visit, also defended the U.S. seizure of a North Korean cargo ship May 14.
Bipartisan thirst for more war: 75% of Congress calls on Trump to boost intervention in Syria, to ‘pressure’ Iran and Russia
While Trump threatens Iran and Venezuela with new wars, 400 Congress members, including leaders from both parties, want to intensify the eight-year war on Syria, to weaken Iran, Russia, and Hezbollah.
Nearly 400 Lawmakers Call on Trump to Address Threats in Syria
(20.05.2019)
The region has also been destabilized by Iranian regime’s threatening behavior. In Syria, Iran is working to establish a permanent military presence that can threaten our allies. In the past year alone, an Iranian-armed drone infiltrated Israeli airspace and the IRGC fired dozens of missiles toward Israel from Syria. Additionally, Iran continues its program to pursue a direct overland route from Iran to Lebanon.

COP21 and Agenda 2030: The challenges of complementarity
(26.11.2015)
The interaction of climate change and development has found full recognition in the Agenda 2030 programme adopted in September 2015.
Transforming our World: The 2030 Agenda for sustainable Development
(26.09.2015)
This Agenda is a plan of action for people, planet and prosperity. It also seeks to strengthen universal peace in larger freedom. We recognise that eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions, including extreme poverty, is the greatest global challenge and an indispensable requirement for sustainable development.
All countries and all stakeholders, acting in collaborative partnership, will implement this plan. We are resolved to free the human race from the tyranny of poverty and want and to heal and secure our planet. We are determined to take the bold and transformative steps which are urgently needed to shift the world on to a sustainable and resilient path. As we embark on this collective journey, we pledge that no one will be left behind.
(26.09.2015)
Nochmal in Kürze:

Scientists predict sun‘s activity will be weak during next solar cycle
(08.04.2019)
„We expect Solar Cycle 25 will be very similar to Cycle 24: another fairly weak cycle, preceded by a long, deep minimum,“ said panel co-chair Lisa Upton, Ph.D., solar physicist with Space Systems Research Corp. „The expectation that Cycle 25 will be comparable in size to Cycle 24 means that the steady decline in solar cycle amplitude, seen from cycles 21-24, has come to an end and that there is no indication that we are currently approaching a Maunder-type minimum in solar activity.“
Surprise: Solar System „Force Field“ Shrinks Fast
(01.10.2010)
„If we’ve learned anything from IBEX so far, it is that the models that we’re using for interaction of the solar wind with the galaxy were just dead wrong,“ David McComas, principal investigator for the IBEX program, said during a NASA press conference Thursday.
For starters, it’s been assumed that the heliosphere’s expansion and contraction follows the sun’s roughly 11-year activity cycle, during which the flow rate of charged particles, or solar wind, fluctuates.

Sun‘s Magnetic Field To ‚Flip‘ Causing ‚A Ripple Effect‘ Past Pluto (VIDEO)
(06.08.2013)
The polar switch also affects cosmic rays, which can endanger satellites and astronauts. Disturbances in the rays could even affect Earth‘s climate.
The sheet acts as a „shield“ against these rays, and a wavy current sheet can be even more effective.
Pluto Is Emitting X-Rays, and That‘s Really Weird
(16.09.2016)
The most likely explanation, according to Wolk, is that high energy particles from the solar wind are colliding with escaped bits of Pluto’s atmosphere—which is mostly nitrogen, carbon, and oxygen—stripping away electrons, and producing an x-ray flare. If true, that’s a very important insight, because it means Pluto’s atmosphere is boiling away into space. Slowly.
(…)
Clearly, more research is needed to figure out exactly why Pluto’s atmosphere is leaky, and what’s responsible.
Spring on Pluto: an analysis over 30 years
(10.05.2019)
Thus Pluto had its equinox in 1988, before moving to perihelion (at 30 au) in 1989. Since then, the dwarf planet has continually moved away from the Sun to reach 32 ua in 2016, which represents a loss of 25 % of his average insolation.
Naively, a sharp fall in atmospheric pressure could be expected. In fact, the gas-ice balance of nitrogen imposes that for each degree Kelvin lost at the surface, the pressure should decrease by a factor of two.
But the exact opposite occurs.
Pluto‘s lower atmosphere and pressure evolution from ground-based stellar occultations, 1988-2016
(06.03.2019)
Results: (i) Pressure has suffered a monotonic increase from 1988 to 2016, that is compared to a seasonal volatile transport model, from which tight constraints on a combination of albedo and emissivity of N2 ice are derived;
Winter is coming to destroy Pluto‘s atmosphere by 2030, study says
(29.04.2019)
If Pluto‘s atmosphere collapses and freezes over, the dwarf planet may appear brighter in our sky because it will reflect more sunlight, Cole said.
Pluto warms while the sun cools
(Last updated on 15 September 2010 by gpwayne)
Claims that solar system bodies are heating up due to increased solar activity are clearly wrong. The sun’s output has declined in recent decades. Only Pluto and Neptune are exhibiting increased brightness.
Pluto is undergoing global warming, researchers find
(09.10.2002)
Elliot said the new results have surprised the observers, who as recently as July thought that Pluto‘s atmosphere may be cooling. (…)
Since 1989, for example, the sun‘s position in Pluto‘s sky has changed by more than the corresponding change on the Earth that causes the difference between winter and spring.

A Gloomy Mars Warms Up
(14.05.2007)
They discovered that a wind-whipped, dusty surface has a measurable effect on the amount of sunlight that is reflected by the planet. The results of this research show that an increase in darkened surface areas may account for a one degree Fahrenheit rise in the surface air temperature of the planet.
Historical and Contemporary Trends in the Size, Drift, and Color of Jupiter‘s Great Red Spot
(13.03.2018)
Observations of Jupiter‘s Great Red Spot (GRS) span more than 150 years. This allows for careful measurements of its size and drift rate. High spatial resolution spacecraft data also allow tracking of its spectral characteristics and internal dynamics and structure. The GRS continues to shrink in longitudinal length at an approximately linear rate of 0fdg194 yr−1 and in latitudinal width at 0fdg048 yr−1. Its westward drift rate (relative to System III W. longitude) has increased from ~0fdg26/day in the 1980s to ~0fdg36/day currently. Since 2014, the GRS‘s short wavelength (<650 nm) reflectance has continued to decrease, while it has become brighter at 890 nm, indicating a change in clouds/haze at high altitudes. In addition, its north–south color asymmetry has decreased, and the dark core has become smaller.
Jupiter’s great red spot is shrinking: Scientists believe that huge storm is getting smaller due to climate change
(09. März 2009)
Observations of cloud cover over the past decade or so have suggested the huge, oval tempest was getting smaller as Jupiter’s climate changes.
Less absorbed solar energy and more internal heat for Jupiter
(13.09.2018)
The radiant energy budget and internal heat are fundamental properties of giant planets, but precise determination of these properties remains a challenge.
(…)
Furthermore, the significant wavelength dependency of Jupiter’s albedo implies that the radiant energy budgets and internal heat of the other giant planets in our solar system should be re-examined.
(…)
Furthermore, the transfer and distribution of radiant energy within the atmospheric systems modify the thermal structure and hence generate the mechanical energy to drive atmospheric circulation, weather, and climate. The radiant energy budget and the related internal heat of the giant planets also bear upon their evolutionary history.
Time variation of Jupiter’s internal magnetic field consistent with zonal wind advection
(20.05.2019)
However, of the six Solar System planets with active dynamos, secular variation has been firmly established only for Earth. Here, we compare magnetic field observations of Jupiter from the Pioneer 10 and 11, Voyager 1 and Ulysses spacecraft (acquired 1973–1992) with a new Juno reference model (JRM09)1. We find a consistent, systematic change in Jupiter’s field over this 45-year time span, which cannot be explained by changes in the magnetospheric field or by changing the assumed rotation rate of Jupiter.
Jupiters Magnetfeld schwankt
(24.05.2019)

The French European election campaign has been defined by the president, Emmanuel Macron, as an existential fight between pro-European progressives and Eurosceptic, far-right nationalists.
Boris Johnson vows to take Britain out of the EU on Oct 31 ‚Brexit deal or no deal‘
Hours after a tearful Theresa May announced June 7 as the date she will step down as Tory leader, Mr Johnson insisted there would be no further extension of Article 50 if he wins the race to succeed her.
His campaign received a major boost as both Philip Hammond and Amber Rudd indicated they could back him, suggesting he could receive top-level support from both Remain and Leave campaigners.
Theresa May Will Remain An MP
The question now is whether she will stick around like Ted Heath or move on at the time of a General Election like Margaret Thatcher.
