The State Department has begun firing more than 1,300 people as part of a dramatic overhaul of the agency, according to a State Department official.
The firings will affect 1,107 civil service and 246 foreign service officers, an internal notice seen by CNN said. It comes as the State Department implements a drastic reorganization as part of the Trump administration’s broader efforts to shrink the federal government.
The White House said in a statement Saturday that Trump was deploying the Guardsmen to “address the lawlessness that has been allowed to fester” in California.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, objected to the move and said in a post on X that the move from the Republican president was “purposefully inflammatory and will only escalate tensions.”

The proposal under discussion involves stationing French Dassault Rafale fighter jets, equipped with nuclear weapons, on German soil. This move would serve both as a deterrent against potential Russian aggression and as a signal of Europe’s ability to act independently of the United States in defence matters.
According to The Telegraph, French officials have indicated that such a deployment would not be technically difficult and could send a powerful strategic message.

An extension of the French and British nuclear deterrent to other European countries has been on the table for several years, but has gained more urgency with the gradual withdrawal of the US from Europe‘s security architecture.
Most recently in early 2024, France’s Emmanuel Macron had pitched the creation of a new ‚strategic dialogue‘ on the French nuclear strategy with key European partners, and offered joint deterrence exercises.
Macron echoed this perspective in a live chat on social media on Thursday evening.

Speaking with POLITICO and two French journalists after spending around six hours with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his trip, Macron emphasized his pet theory of “strategic autonomy” for Europe, presumably led by France, to become a “third superpower.”
A mere 25 percent of those polled said they wanted the current government to continue leading the country. Thirty-three percent said they support a unity government instead, and another 33 percent prefer another round of elections. Among Likud voters, just 43 percent want the government‘s term to continue, 35 percent prefer a unity government and 10 percent want a return to the polls.
