Aldous Huxley: Schöne neue Welt

(1932)

»Was soll das alles?

A U.S. Ground Invasion of Iran Would Face 1 Million Troops, 4,000 Tanks, and Mountains That Favor the Defenders

As is often the case in large-scale military operations, logistics are crucial to success. Preparing, staging, and deploying a large, mechanized ground force is a massive and difficult undertaking, and in this case, the favorable points of entry are most likely Turkish territory or the ocean. It seems unlikely the United States could stage an invasion force in Iraq.

To say the prospective operation is “high-risk” might be an understatement. Any concentration of U.S. forces would immediately offer a target for Iran’s remaining precision-guided ballistic missiles.

US deploys Additional Warships to Middle East for possible Ground Assault Inside Iran

A report by Washington Post said the Pentagon is weighing bold military actions, including raids on Kharg Island and strategic coastal targets near the Strait of Hormuz.

The moves stop short of a full invasion, but the stakes could not be higher. The plans involve elite special operations forces alongside conventional infantry, putting American troops directly in the line of fire against Iranian drones, missile systems, and ground defenses.

Spain‘s Sanchez slams double standards on Ukraine, Gaza and Lebanon

(March 25, 2026)

Speaking before Spain‘s lower house of parliament, Sanchez challenged the selective application of principles.

„What we cannot do is condemn the invasion of Ukraine … and applaud Iran‘s attacks,“ Sanchez said. „We cannot demand respect for Greenland‘s territorial integrity and remain silent when territorial integrity is violated in Gaza or Lebanon.“

The Spanish revolt: The European leader who says no to Trump

(March 27, 2026)

As the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran spreads shock waves throughout the global economy, Sánchez, a telegenic 54-year-old Socialist, has adopted the simple slogan of “no a la guerra,” or “no to war.” Unlike others in Europe, he has refused to let the U.S. military use his country’s air bases for the war despite Trump’s anger.

Spain, rarely the center of gravity in European affairs, has become the standard-bearer for Europeans frustrated at the continent’s fear of standing up to a U.S. president. Trump’s threats on Greenland and the unpopularity of the Iran war with voters have brought more Europeans around to his position.

Libya, Syria, Somalia and Yemen: Calculating the Millions-High Death Toll of America’s Post-9/11 Wars

(26.4.2018)

As Barbara Lee presciently warned her colleagues before she cast her lone dissenting vote in 2001, we have “become the evil we deplore.” But these wars have not been accompanied by fearsome military parades (not yet) or speeches about conquering the world. Instead they have been politically justified by “information warfare” to demonize enemies and fabricate crises, and then waged in a “disguised, quiet, media free” way, to hide their cost in human blood from the American public and the world.

After 16 years of war, about 6 million violent deaths, 6 countries utterly destroyed and many more destabilized, it is urgent that the American public come to terms with the true human cost of our country’s wars and how we have been manipulated and misled into turning a blind eye to them – before they go on even longer, destroy more countries, further undermine the rule of international law and kill millions more of our fellow human beings.

Iraq conflict has killed a million, says survey

(January 30, 2008)

The margin of error in the survey, conducted in August and September 2007, was 1.7 percent, giving a range of deaths of 946,258 to 1.12 million.

ORB originally found that 1.2 million people had died, but decided to go back and conduct more research in rural areas to make the survey as comprehensive as possible and then came up with the revised figure.

Survey Puts Iraqi War Dead Above One Million

(September 18, 2007)

The British polling agency ORB has released a new survey of Iraqis that suggests that more than one million Iraqis have been killed since the war began. One surprising finding from the study was that most of the estimated 1.2 million deaths were the result of a gun shot, not car bomb.

(March 3, 2026)

In the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, attacks, President George W Bush launched what he called a “war on terror”, a global military campaign that reshaped US foreign policy and triggered wars, invasions and air strikes across numerous countries.

According to an analysis by Brown University’s Watson Institute of International & Public Affairs, US-led wars since 2001 have directly caused the deaths of about 940,000 people across Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Yemen and other conflict zones

Silvio Rodríguez: ‘The world is run by an authoritarian, warmongering, thieving regime. And it’s not Cuba’

(March 26, 2026)

The image of a rifle in the hands of a singer-songwriter is strange, but not when the one wielding it is Silvio Rodríguez, 79. The Cuban singer-songwriter has spent his entire life singing, directly or indirectly, about the Revolution, its leaders and its ideals; about the martyrs and the guerrillas. “There are politics in my songs, but not propaganda,” says the musician, who receives EL PAÍS on Wednesday at the Ojalá studios in Havana. He speaks of the government’s “orthodox and closed” vision in the economic sphere, and of his commitment to a less “rigid” socialism. “Socialism by the book is very idealistic,” he concludes. He doesn’t budge an inch on his opinion of the United States government: “The world is run by an authoritarian, warmongering, thieving regime. And it’s not Cuba.”

‚No Kings‘ protests draw large crowds in cities, towns across US

Huge crowds of protesters took to the streets in more than 3,000 cities and towns across the country Saturday to again call out President Donald Trump and his polices, with organizers saying this one could be the biggest so far.

The „No Kings“ protests are the latest since October and organizers said they are looking to send a message addressing what they call „the constant chaos of the Trump administration“ since then. Organizers said later in the day that an estimated 8 million people took part in the demonstrations.

What we covered
By CNN staff

• Widespread protests: “No Kings” demonstrations have taken place from coast to coast today, with attendees rallying against President Donald Trump’s policies, the rising cost of living and the war with Iran.

• On the ground: Throughout the day, crowds gathered to march, sing, dance and wave signs in major cities, suburbs and small towns across red and blue states, with huge marches taking place in Los Angeles and New York. A marquee event in Minnesota featured a Bruce Springsteen performance and a slate of high-profile speakers.

• Third round: Last year, millions of people attended largely peaceful protests on two “No Kings” days. Since then, Trump’s nationwide immigration enforcement blitz has come and gone in several major cities. Now, Americans are facing skyrocketing gas prices and a flagging economy due to the war.
