Tensions Between Pelosi and Progressive Democrats of ‘the Squad’ Burst Into Flame

Six months into the new House Democratic majority, long-simmering tensions between the speaker and the squad — Representatives Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts — have boiled over in the most public of ways, setting off a flurry of criticism of Ms. Pelosi among liberal activists and reinvigorating a debate within the party about how best to stand up to President Trump.

Republicans have no problem giving over $1 trillion in tax breaks to the rich and massive corporations. But when it comes to canceling student debt or tuition-free college, we „can‘t afford it.“ What hypocrisy!

Why is Nancy Pelosi slamming AOC and helping Trump?

Pelosi‘s criticism came after a June 25 vote in which the four were the only Democrats to oppose a House bill to provide funding for the crisis at the southern border because as they put it in a statement, „in good conscience, we cannot support this supplemental funding bill, which gives even more money to ICE and CBP and continues to support a fundamentally cruel and broken immigration system.“

Pelosi on disagreement with Ocasio-Cortez, Omar, Tlaib, Pressley: ‚They‘re four people and that‘s how many votes they got‘

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), in an interview with a New York Times opinion columnist, said that despite their popularity, progressive congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) and Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) each only get one vote.

Pelosi‘s comments follow a recent split between the four lawmakers and more moderate House Democrats over a House-passed spending measure aimed at helping migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Democracy: the unfinished revolution

To that end, spiked is launching a programme of radical democratic reform. Fighting for Brexit remains the priority, but we must also look beyond Brexit and make the case for reforms that will disempower unelected elites and empower the public. Over the next five weeks we will outline our five key cries – listed below – and after that we will publish a series of essays and articles making the case for popular sovereignty, democratic engagement, a philosophy of nationhood and a universalism based on democratic nations, not unaccountable global elites.

To kick off, here are the five reforms spiked thinks we need now to start the process of energising popular democracy.

Labour as we knew it is no more

EU MUST BE JOKING: Labour officially backs Remaining in the EU in huge Brexit betrayal to millions of voters

In a bombshell announcement Jeremy Corbyn said today that his party will back another divisive vote to stop Brexit – as long as the Tories are still in power.

After years of flip-flopping on the issue, he said that no matter what Brexit deal the next PM gets with the EU, they should put it back to the people for another say.

Brexit news – live: Corbyn says Labour will back Remain in new referendum as MPs’ bid to block no-deal rejected

However his message, which came during a day of meetings with senior party figures, raised fresh questions over Labour‘s Brexit strategy in a general election.

It comes as attempts to stop the next prime minister forcing through a no-deal Brexit by Halloween were rejected by the deputy speaker.

As Dominic Grieve fails again, MPs are no closer to stopping no-deal

Grieve‘s plan was less concerned with the meat of the legislation itself than it was with giving MPs opportunities to impose their will on an executive determined to leave the EU without an agreement. Now that is has failed, the legal path to progrogation remains clear to a prime minister sufficiently motivated to take it – though the politics are still tricky.

FBI, ICE find state driver’s license photos are a gold mine for facial-recognition searches

Thousands of facial-recognition requests, internal documents and emails over the past five years, obtained through public-records requests by researchers with Georgetown Law’s Center on Privacy and Technology and provided to The Washington Post, reveal that federal investigators have turned state departments of motor vehicles databases into the bedrock of an unprecedented surveillance infrastructure.

Police have long had access to fingerprints, DNA and other “biometric data” taken from criminal suspects. But the DMV records contain the photos of a vast majority of a state’s residents, most of whom have never been charged with a crime.
