Equating Israeli and Iranian Protests, U.S. Lawmakers Slam Netanyahu’s Judicial Overhaul

“All over the world liberal democracy is under siege by right-wing autocrats and fanatical extremists who are in a coordinated global attack on freedom,” says Raskin, 60, who was a constitutional law professor prior to serving in Congress.

„Fortunately, the forces of strong democracy, judicial independence, human rights and women’s equality, religious pluralism and the rule of law are on the march too – from the streets of Jerusalem to the streets of Tehran to the heroic people of Ukraine battling fascist invasion to all their powerful democratic allies in the United States and Europe,“ he continues, putting the Israeli government in some previously unimaginable company.

Demonstration in Berlin: Zehntausende protestieren gegen Iran

German embassy is the instigator of unrest in Iran

(September 28, 2022)

Nearly two weeks ago, a young Iranian girl died in police custody under ambiguous circumstances. The girl, Mahsa Amini, collapsed as a result of a stroke suffered in the custody, according to footage released by police authorities. The incident caused huge anger and sorrow in Iran, prompting the country’s highest political echelons to highlight the need to investigate the incident.

Iranian President Ayatollah Seyed Ebrahim ordered an investigation into the tragic death of Amini. He also spoke to the family of Amini to offer condolences and assure them about following up on the case.

“I learned about this incident during my trip to Uzbekistan, and I immediately ordered my colleagues to investigate the matter especially. I assure you that I will demand this issue from the responsible institutions so that its dimensions are clarified and no rights are violated,” President Raisi told the family, adding, “Your daughter is like my own daughter, and I feel that this incident happened to one of my loved ones. Please accept my condolences.”

Some Iranians staged some protests in the wake of the incident. And authorities sought to address their concerns and soothe them. Soon the peaceful protests turned violent and led to the killing of many police officers. According to the unofficial toll, more than 40 people were killed in riots over the last two weeks, with dozens of public and private properties burned.

The Tehran Times has learned that four European countries and an Asian one have been involved in inciting riots and protests.

This Iranian opposition group was labeled a terrorist organization. Now it has supporters in the White House

(29.07.2019)

For decades, the United States categorized the Mujahedin Khalq, or MEK, as a terrorist organization. In the Trump era, members of the Iranian dissident group, which seeks to topple the government in Iran, have found key allies in Washington.

People close to President Trump, including national security advisor John Bolton, and Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudolph W. Giuliani, are supporters of the Mujahedin Khalq. For years, Bolton and Giuliani have called for a change of government in Tehran and have described the Mujahedin Khalq as a viable alternative to the government of the Islamic Republic.

Iran: The Nationwide Uprising and the Role of MEK Resistance Units

(26th September 2022)

– One of the major characteristics of these protests is the direct and indirect role of the Resistance Units affiliated with the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK) in organizing and, more importantly, working to prolong them.

– Beginning in 2014, MEK organized the Resistance Units, which, while affiliated to the organization, are ordinary citizens with regular ties and communication with others around them, in the workplace, in offices, hospitals, and in society in general. The objective conditions in society, i.e., the unresolved and profound social and political grievances, facilitated the formation of the Resistance Units.

Iran Nuclear Deal: Protests in Iran make restoring the JCPOA more urgent than ever

If the idea of withdrawing from the JCPOA was always bad, it is even more detrimental now considering the political shifts in Tehran. The moderate administration of Hassan Rouhani which sought better relations with the West has been wholly discredited by Trump’s aggressive policies. The hardliners who now dominate the whole political landscape in Iran have always been skeptical of the JCPOA.

Moreover, an influential faction within the hardline camp sees the JCPOA as irrelevant at best and constraining Iran’s security options at worst. According to this line of thinking, Iran has already weathered the storm of the U.S. sanctions. Following on from that, what Iran needs now is not to get sanctions lifted, but rather to further immunize Iran from them by seeking closer ties with Russia and China. Iran notably has become a full-fledged member of the Shanghai Security Organization.

To Support Iranians, Abandon the JCPOA

(October 5, 2022)

Though official numbers are unknown, opposition groups have reported 300 deaths and 15,000 arrests in the protests. With ubiquitous chants of “death to Khamenei” (referring to Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei) and “death to the dictator,” Iranians have made their intentions clear: they are fighting for a complete overthrow of the ruling theocracy and will not be satisfied with meaningless “reforms” that preserve the illegitimate regime.

Will protests in Iran end the Islamic Republic?

Suzanne Maloney, vice president and director of Foreign Policy at Brookings, speaks with David Dollar about what the continuing demonstrations in Iran over the death of Mahsa Amini could mean for regime stability, plus Iran’s economic situation, the prospects of Iran returning to some form of a nuclear deal with the West, and what it would take for the U.S. and Iran to have a better relationship.

Germany steps up pressure for EU to impose sanctions on Iran

(29.09.2022)

The bloc last agreed human rights sanctions on Tehran in 2021. No Iranians had been added to that list since 2013, however, as the bloc has shied away from angering Iran in the hope of safeguarding a nuclear accord Tehran signed with world powers in 2015. Those talks have now stalled.
