New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday launched an investigation into nursing homes‘ conduct during the COVID-19 outbreak, which has left more than 3,500 residents of long-term care facilities dead since the start of March.
The state Department of Health and Attorney General Letitia James will co-lead the investigation, which will focus on whether nursing homes and adult-care facilities appropriately followed state law and regulation as the coronavirus went on its torrid spread in New York.

Confirmed cases: 138,836 statewide, up from 130,689 on Monday.
Currently hospitalized: 17,493 people statewide, up from 16,837.
In intensive care: 4,593, up by 89 from 4,504 on Monday.
The governor emphasized that the numbers were not an abstraction. “That’s 731 people who we lost,” he said. “Behind every one of those numbers is an individual, is a family, is a mother, is a father, is a sister, is a brother. So a lot of pain again today for many New Yorkers.”

“There has been anecdotal evidence that it is promising; that’s why we’re going ahead,” he added, noting that some patients have a pre-existing condition or medication regimen that prevents them from taking it.
