Turkey says Israel should be suspended from UN General Assembly

(August 25, 2025)

On 27 September 1974, the UN Credentials Committee rejected South Africa’s credentials, a routine procedure before General Assembly meetings.

Three days later, the General Assembly passed Resolution 3207, urging the Security Council to review South Africa’s membership in light of its constant violations of the Charter.

Although the Security Council vetoed the resolution, in November of that year the president of the General Assembly, Algeria’s Abdelaziz Bouteflika, ruled that, given the Credentials Committee’s decision and the adoption of Resolution 3207, the General Assembly would refuse to allow South Africa’s delegation to participate in its work.

South Africa remained suspended from the General Assembly until June 1994, following the end of apartheid.

Activists argue that the UN General Assembly could apply the same process to Israel. They note that the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in July 2024 issued an advisory opinion declaring Israel’s decades-long occupation of Palestinian territories “unlawful” and its near-complete segregation of populations in the West Bank a breach of international law on “racial segregation” and “apartheid”.

Remarks by the President of the General Assembly H.E. Ms. Annalena Baerbock at the European Parliament, Strasbourg 10 February 2026

These are trying times.

When President Metsola invited me in September at the High-Level Week of the UN General Assembly, the world felt already chaotic. I warned of a make-or-break moment for our multilateral system.

Today, only 40 days into 2026:

Venezuela.
Iran.
Greenland.

On top of Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan and so many more crises.

The international order is not only under pressure, it is under attack.

And we face a new and more troubling kind of crisis: conflicts waged not even under the pretense of self-defense or respect for international law but often carried out in open defiance of it.

At precisely the moment when we most need cooperation, most need the United Nations, powers, even those who have a special responsibility to protect peace and security, are pulling away from it or even outright attacking it.

This geopolitical shift towards a world where ‘might makes right’, contradicts more than a century of hard, bloody lessons, which people of this region remember all too well.

Rules and standards drawn from these experiences, which were believed to be set in stone, are now openly questioned, dismissed, or violated.

History teaches us that large systems rarely collapse in one dramatic moment.

They erode slowly. Rule by rule. Commitment by commitment.

With those who should defend them, rather staying silent.

Until one day, what seemed permanent simply vanishes.

General Assembly President urges Europeans to ‘stand up’ for the UN

(February 10, 2026)

In a key address to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, Annalena Baerbock repeated her call to uphold multilateralism amid “trying times” globally.

She noted that just 40 days into 2026, the world has already seen crises around Venezuela, Iran and Greenland, on top of continuing devastation in Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan and elsewhere.

“The international order is not only under pressure, it is under attack,” she told lawmakers.

“And we face a new and more troubling kind of crisis: conflicts waged not even under the pretence of self-defence or respect for international law but often carried out in open defiance of it.”

She warned that at precisely the moment the world most needs cooperation and the UN, “powers – even those who have a special responsibility to protect peace and security – are pulling away from it or even outright attacking it.”

Ms. Baerbock recalled that four years ago, when she was Germany’s Foreign Minister, she addressed the General Assembly and called for the UN to stand up for Europe’s peace as Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

“Today, I’m coming as President of the General Assembly to Europe, calling for Europe to stand up for the United Nations because the world needs the UN. But right now, the UN and its principles as enshrined in the Charter, needs the world too,” she said, referring to all continents.

Demolition of UNRWA premises is symbolic of Israel’s attack on the United Nations system: UN expert

This outrageous attack by a UN member State against a UN General Assembly-mandated organisation is unprecedented, dangerous, and should spur the international community into action, especially in view of the Provisional measures of the ICJ in the case brought by South Africa and the recent ICJ opinion, confirming that Israel has no right to interfere with UNRWA’s work.

This attack constitutes a grave violation of the privileges and immunities of the United Nations, and an apparent international crime which adds to the long list that Israel continues to commit in the Palestinian territory it illegally occupies.

These actions are part of Israel‘s genocidal strategy that will not pause of its own volition; it must be stopped through tangible actions from States that must ensure accountability and cut ties with Israel.

I call on the Secretary General to request that the General Assembly convene a special session and consider next steps following these unprecedented attacks on UNRWA and the wider UN.

It is time for the General Assembly to suspend Israel’s credentials, pursuant to Article 6 of the UN Charter, and authorise sanctions and embargoes against Israel, especially on the arms trade.”

‘No ordinary session’: Baerbock opens UN General Assembly with call for courage and reform

As the UN General Assembly opened its 80th session on Tuesday, new President Annalena Baerbock called on Member States to unite in addressing global crises – from war and poverty to climate change – taking her oath on the original 1945 Charter and pledging to lead with courage and inclusiveness.

AN APPEAL TO ALL BROADCASTERS – Stop ignoring international demand for military intervention

(August 29, 2025)

We are aware that international calls for military intervention have been sidelined and ignored by mainstream media platforms, but people worldwide are awakening to a clear truth – Israel is ideologically committed to the extermination or expulsion of Palestinians, cannot be negotiated with and must therefore by stopped militarily.

The world has a legal and moral obligation to militarily intervene to stop the extermination. The illegal seige of Gaza must be broken, unlimited food and aid must be delivered to all Palestinians, a no fly zone must be estbalished, all Israelies must be forced to evacuate from Palestine including in West Bank and East Jerusalem, all Israeli checkpoints and walls and military inftrastructure must be dismantled. These are the minimum conditions to stop Israel‘s genocide of Palestinians and for any meaningful prospect of Palestinians exercising self determination or the continuation of their inherent right to armed resistance over their own land, all of which must remain the ultimate goal of international military intervention.

Gaza Tribunal calls for armed UN intervention to halt ‘most lethal phase of genocide’ in Gaza

(August 18, 2025)

“The imminent escalation deeply challenges member governments of the UN … to take drastic action now,” Falk declared, citing legal pathways such as the 1950 Uniting for Peace Resolution and the Responsibility to Protect framework adopted at the UN’s 2005 summit.

Quoting Palestinian UN envoy Riyad Mansour’s appeal for immediate protection forces, the tribunal declared: “We, as the Gaza Tribunal, join with those who treat silence in the face of genocide as complicity.”

Resolution adopted by the General Assembly on 16 September 2005

Responsibility to protect populations from genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity

138. Each individual State has the responsibility to protect its populations from genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity. This responsibility entails the prevention of such crimes, including their incitement, through appropriate and necessary means. We accept that responsibility and will act in accordance with it. The international community should, as appropriate, encourage and help States to exercise this responsibility and support the United Nations in establishing an early warning capability.

139. The international community, through the United Nations, also has the responsibility to use appropriate diplomatic, humanitarian and other peaceful means, in accordance with Chapters VI and VIII of the Charter, to help to protect populations from genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity. In this context, we are prepared to take collective action, in a timely and decisive manner, through the Security Council, in accordance with the Charter, including Chapter VII, on a case-by-case basis and in cooperation with relevant regional organizations as appropriate, should peaceful means be inadequate and national authorities are manifestly failing to protect their populations from genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity. We stress the need for the General Assembly to continue consideration of the responsibility to
protect populations from genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity and its implications, bearing in mind the principles of the Charter and international law. We also intend to commit ourselves, as necessary and appropriate,
to helping States build capacity to protect their populations from genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity and to assisting those which are under stress before crises and conflicts break out.

140. We fully support the mission of the Special Adviser of the Secretary-General
on the Prevention of Genocide

Uniting for peace – General Assembly Resolution

In the face of Israel‘s genocide in Gaza, ongoing silence and inaction is complicity

For nearly two years, we have witnessed a live-streamed genocide. War crimes have been well-documented by journalists, rights groups, doctors and civilians. There’s enough evidence to sift through for decades to come.

Activists and celebrities have reminded the western world of their vow to “never again” allow something like this to happen. Countless social media campaigns have pleaded with the public to keep “all eyes on Rafah” and on Gaza.

But still the genocide persists. Israel’s actions in Gaza and the occupied West Bank have become more brazen and violent than ever.

Why is this happening? It’s not because Israel is a small beacon of democracy in the Middle East surrounded by enemies. Rather, it’s because Israel is a rogue state surrounded by capitulators who have allowed this to unfold.

Gaza is a mirror reflecting the world‘s absolute shame: Opinion

Never in recent history has a civilian population been locked into a fenced strip of land – denied food, water, and fuel – while being bombed from air, land, and sea.

This is not siege. It is the world’s first televised extermination.

A concentration camp under constant aerial assault.

(…)

What is happening in Gaza does more than violate law – it obliterates it.

It tears through every principle of humanity, every treaty that claims to uphold it.

The world did not merely fail Gaza. It abandoned her. And in doing so, it exposed itself.

Gaza is not just a killing field.

She is a mirror – and in her reflection, we see our absolute, unvarnished shame.

Terror and chaos for Gaza’s people now entering the ‘death phase’

In an alert, the UN agency for Palestine refugees, UNRWA, relayed desperate testimonies from its colleagues who are also struggling to survive in the war-torn enclave.

“We’re in the death phase,” one UNRWA worker said. “Everything around people at the moment is death, whether it’s bombs or strikes, children wasting away in front of their eyes from malnourishment, from dehydration, and dying.”

Doctors and nurses who continue to work in the UN agency’s clinics and medical centres “are watching children disappear and die in front of their eyes, and there‘s absolutely nothing that they can do about it,” the worker continued.
Civilians ‘faced sniper and tank-fire’

The development comes after desperate Gazans seeking aid came under fire at the weekend “from Israeli tanks, snipers and other gunfire”, according to the UN World Food Programme (WFP).

In a detailed statement after the incident on Sunday 20 July, it explained that a 25-truck lorry convoy crossed the Zikim border point in northern Gaza “destined for starving communities”.

Shortly after passing the final checkpoint after the Zikim crossing point, the convoy encountered large crowds of civilians waiting to access food supplies. This was when the shooting began, leaving “countless” Gazans dead, WFP said, echoing reports by the health authorities.

Condemning the incident, WFP noted that the victims “were simply trying to access food to feed themselves and their families on the brink of starvation”. ….

UN urged to take legal action at ICJ to uphold Francesca Albanese’s immunity

(today / July 11, 2025)

Agnes Callamard, head of the world’s leading human rights organisation Amnesty International and a former special rapporteur, said the UN should act to shield Albanese from the impact of sanctions.

“I think what is more likely to have an impact is other governments, including Albanese’s own government and the EU to take a very strong stand against the sanctions,” she told Middle East Eye.

“But we cannot let the UN off the hook, and we do need to demand that it responds to the attack.”

Guterres‘s spokesman Stephane Dujarric on Thursday denounced the sanctions as “unacceptable” but did not outline concrete measures that will be taken to protect Albanese.

South Africa Is Suspended By U.N. Assembly, 91‐22

(Nov. 13, 1974)

The vote of 91 to 22 was taken to uphold a ruling by the Assembly‘s President, Foreign Minister Abdelaziz Bouteflika of Algeria, suspending South African participation.

The United States unsuccessfully challenged the ruling, Which was also opposed by Britain, a number of Western Europeans and South Americans, and some others. Nineteen countries abstained.

Gaza: can the UN suspend Israel over its treatment of Palestinians? It’s complicated, but yes

At the start of each annual general assembly session, the credentials committee reviews submissions from each member state before they are formally admitted. Usually, this is a formality, but on September 27 1974, the credentials of South Africa – which was then operating an apartheid system – were rejected.

(…)

A draft resolution calling for South Africa’s expulsion was eventually put to the security council at the end of October, but it was vetoed by the US, the UK and France.

However, on November 12, the president of the general assembly, Algeria’s Abdelaziz Bouteflika, ruled that given the credentials committee’s decision and the passing of resolution 3207, “the general assembly refuses to allow the delegation of South Africa to participate in its work”. South Africa remained suspended from the general assembly until June 1994 following the ending of apartheid.

Carnage in Gaza: ‘How much is enough?’ asks UN Assembly President

(19.01.2024)

Addressing the 19th Non-Aligned Summit in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, President Dennis Francis urged the bloc of 120 nations to exert its influence to bring an end to the “carnage” in the war-ravaged enclave.

“That situation behooves us to ask: how much is enough? And does the very concept of enough even exist in this setting?” he said. “I renew the demand for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and for the release of all hostages. This stands as the only credible course of action to authentically address – let alone resolve – this conflict.”
