President Abbas: The Palestinian cause will remain the greatest test of the international system and its credibility

Excellencies, Heads of Delegations and Representatives of States and International Organizations

Ladies and Gentlemen

Today, in these difficult circumstances that our people are enduring, we commemorate the seventy-eighth anniversary of the Nakba, the catastrophe that is ongoing until this very day, and the crime of ethnic cleansing inflicted upon our Palestinian people. This crime, carried out by Zionist militias with the support of colonial powers, led to the uprooting of 950,000 Palestinians from their cities and villages, and their removal from the land of their ancestors, which they had inherited and inhabited for thousands of years, to be displaced and replaced, transforming them into a people of refugees, witness to the attempts to steal, falsify and erase their history and heritage.

This heinous crime, the Nakba, was accompanied by numerous massacres during which tens of thousands of our people were slaughtered and killed, and their cities and villages destroyed. More than 531 towns and villages, once vibrant with cultural, economic, social, and political life, were erased.

We will not leave, and we will not forget.

We, the Palestinian people and our refugees, did not emigrate from Palestine nor leave it voluntarily in 1948, as Israel and the Zionist movement have claimed, rather, we were forcibly and coercively expelled from it. The truth is that the Palestinian people rose up repeatedly to defend their historic homeland and their existence on their land. We still remember the Palestinian revolution of 1936–1939, but colonial powers provided the Zionists with every means and force necessary to seize the land of Palestine by force of arms.

The Zionist movement’s reliance on false narratives, mythology, and the infamous Balfour Declaration from the colonial era, along with the selective manipulation of fabricated historical events does not create rights, nor does it nullify the deeply rooted historical and legal rights of the Palestinian people to self-determination. It also does not negate international law or the Charter of the United Nations.

Britain recognises Palestine, 108 years on from Balfour declaration

The UK, Canada, and Australia have officially announced their recognition of a Palestinian state.

The historic move comes ahead of the UN General Assembly session in New York, which will begin on Monday.

France is expected to imminently follow suit.

Speaking at the United Nations, the British foreign secretary, David Lammy, cited another century-old document in arguing that recognition would redress a historical injustice: the Balfour Declaration, issued a year after the signing of Sykes-Picot, which endorsed “the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people.” It had a proviso that “nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine.”

Dear Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary, Re. UK recognition of a Palestinian state

We write to you in advance of the UN Conference co-chaired by France and Saudi
Arabia on the 28th-29th July in New York, to put on record our support for UK recognition of a Palestinian state.

We are expectant that the outcome of the conference will be the UK Government
outlining when and how it will act on its long-standing commitment on a two-state solution; as well as how it will work with international partners to make this a reality.

Whilst we appreciate the UK does not have it in its power to bring about a free and independent Palestine, UK recognition would have a significant impact due to our historic connections and our membership on the UN Security Council, so we urge you to take this step.

British recognition of Palestine would be particularly powerful given its role as the author of the Balfour Declaration and the former Mandatory Power in Palestine. Since 1980 we have backed a two-state solution. Such a recognition would give that position substance as well as living up to a historic responsibility we have to the people under that Mandate.

But the protests held in Suhrawardy Udyan on April 12 where a declaration outlined the demands for the United Nations, the world community and Muslim world leaders, especially Arab nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the Bangladesh government appear hardly critical of the United States. Israel’s genocide in Gaza has, of course, resulted from the nonchalance of the Muslim world, especially Arab nations. But it could not happen without the complicity of the United States. Before the Balfour declaration was made public, it was approved by the United States in early 1918. The west, generally, and the United States, especially, having ignored the historical context has given rise to the current state of the conflict. The United States, the first country to grant Israel recognition on May 14, 1948, engineered the Oslo accord and the Abraham accord to further consolidate Israel as the colonial settler state in occupied Palestine with support from major Arab states. The Arab world and the United States are both equally responsible for the current state of Palestine and they all should be equally condemned.

Balfour-Deklaration

In der Balfour-Deklaration vom 2. November 1917 erklärte sich Großbritannien einverstanden mit dem 1897 festgelegten Ziel des Zionismus, in Palästina eine „nationale Heimstätte“ des jüdischen Volkes zu errichten. Namensgeber war der damalige britische Außenminister Arthur James Balfour. Mit der Deklaration sollten auch die Rechte bestehender nicht-jüdischer Gemeinschaften gewahrt bleiben. Damals befand sich Palästina noch im Machtbereich der Osmanen. Die damalige britische Regierung unter Lloyd George versprach sich von der Zusage an die zionistische Bewegung Vorteile in der Mobilisierung zusätzlicher Ressourcen während des Krieges und auch langfristige strategische Vorteile.

Palestine Action Strike Britain’s Foreign Office and Occupy Leonardo On Balfour 106

Today, on the 106th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration, activists from Palestine Action targeted Britain’s foreign office and are currently occupying the weapons firm Leonardo at their London HQ. Leonardo’s London offices have been covered in red paint, to symbolise the Palestinian bloodshed by their weaponry, whilst one activist remains on top of the company’s front overhang. Elsewhere, the Foreign Office in London was sprayed in messages including ‘Britain Guilty’ and ‘Fuck Balfour.
