‘Any Palestinian is exposed to monitoring by the Israeli Big Brother’

(12.9.2014) I assumed a role in which people are called “targets”, and those people who really interest us are in no sense terrorists, but rather generally normative people – who interest us because of their roles, so that we can obtain more intelligence and achieve greater access. We take advantage of the capabilities that we have over these people in order to put ourselves at ease. We take advantage of the impact that we have on their lives. Sometimes it involves truly harming a person’s life, or their soul. I mean extortion whereby they must hide things from people around them. It can really screw up their lives. It made me feel omnipotent.

The Biggest Secret: My Life as a New York Times Reporter in the Shadow of the War on Terror

I was sitting in the nearly empty restaurant of the Westin Hotel in Alexandria, Virginia, getting ready for a showdown with the federal government that I had been trying to avoid for more than seven years. The Obama administration was demanding that I reveal the confidential sources I had relied on for a chapter about a botched CIA operation in my 2006 book, “State of War.” I had also written about the CIA operation for the New York Times, but the paper’s editors had suppressed the story at the government’s request. It wasn’t the only time they had done so.

Democrats Unveil Changes To House Rules On Debt Ceiling, Ethics

Democrats plan to tweak the rules so that a motion to vacate can only be offered on the House floor if a majority of either the House Republican Conference or the House Democratic Caucus agrees to do so. The change limits the ability of any one member to wreak havoc on the floor and ultimately bolsters incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., against potential agitators in either party.

03.01.2019 - 13:35 [ Michael McAuliff, congressional reporter ‏/ Twitter ]

Looks like Pelosi will be having none of that intra-party rebellion Ryan and Boehner faced repeatedly from the right. This new rule for the House looks to end the ability of a single member to bring a motion to vacate the chair.

Tomorrow I will also vote No on the rules package, which is trying to slip in #PAYGO. PAYGO isn’t only bad economics, as @RoKhanna explains; it’s also a dark political maneuver designed to hamstring progress on healthcare+other leg. We shouldn’t hinder ourselves from the start.

I will be voting NO on the Rules package with #PayGo. It is terrible economics. The austerians were wrong about the Great Recession and Great Depression. At some point, politicians need to learn from mistakes and read economic history. @paulkrugman @StephanieKelton @RBReich

Ocasio-Cortez slams ‘bad economics’ of budget deficit rule pushed by Democratic leaders

Khanna and Ocasio-Cortez say they’ll vote against the rules package containing paygo on Thursday. A total of 18 Democrats would need to vote against the package for it to be defeated. A defeat would be an embarrassment for Rep. Nancy Pelosi, who is expected to be elected House speaker on the same day.

Ocasio-Cortez, Khanna will vote against House Democratic rules over ‚PAYGO‘ spending restraints

Progressives who support programs like „Medicare-for-all“ and other policies likely to increase government expenditures worry that the rule would create a self-imposed obstacle with limited political upside — and come across as a sign that Democrats are committed to the austerity economics championed, at least rhetorically, by conservative groups.

Donald Trump says Syria is ‚sand and death‘, as he defends US withdrawal from country ‚lost long ago‘

The US president said: „Syria was lost long ago. It was lost long ago. We’re not talking about vast wealth. We’re talking about sand and death. I’m getting out, we’re getting out of Syria. Look, we don’t want Syria.“

He added: „The Kurds, our partners are selling oil to Iran. I‘m not thrilled about that, I‘m not happy about it at all.“

However, Mr Trump said he did want to „protect“ US-backed Kurdish fighters in the country as Washington draws down its 2,000 troops, which would happen „over a period of time“.
