The IPCC: Where’s the Science?

(Mar 11, 2014)

The UN’s climate panel claims to be a ’scientific body.‘ But it’s actually in the business of writing reports that rely on thousands of judgment calls. It’s time to stop pretending that fallible human judgment is ’science.‘

3 Things Scientists Need to Know About the IPCC

(01.09.2015)

The bottom line is that this is a week of naked political horse trading that goes on behind closed doors. Journalists are not allowed to witness what takes place, which is why we’ve been looking at official IPCC photos here. This is what they permit us to see.

It’s only after the diplomats have haggled over this Summary – paragraph by paragraph – that the final version gets officially released at a press conference.

The world is then told that science has spoken. But what’s just happened has nothing to do with science. Scientific truth is not determined in the dead of night by UN-level negotiations. On what planet would such an approach make scientific sense?

But the bad news doesn’t stop there. There’s actually a step in the IPCC process in which the original, lengthy report gets amended so that it conforms to the politically-negotiated Summary. I am not making this up.

Cop26 president: UN climate crisis report is a ‘wake-up call for the world’

He urged “all the major emitters to play their part”, adding the G20 group of nations “is going to be absolutely key in terms of our 1.5-degree future”.

Mr Sharma said countries who are attending the international Cop26 climate talks in Glasgow in November “must send a clear market signal to get the transition moving faster”.

‚Code red for humanity‘: UN report gives stark warning on climate change, says wild weather events will worsen

– Evidence shows that carbon dioxide is the main driver of climate change, the report says.
– Almost 200 countries have signed up to the Paris climate accord.
– The report comes three months before a major climate conference in Glasgow, Scotland.

Cop26: Glasgow climate change conference 2021 – Governments must agree to end use of coal power, says UK’s Cop26 president

(26.07.2021)

This week’s meeting was the first in-person meeting of climate and environment ministers since the last Cop [conference of the parties under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change] in December 2019, just before the Covid-19 outbreak became a pandemic. The lack of in-person meetings has been an obstacle to achieving the progress needed on key issues including emissions cuts, technical agreement on implementing the Paris climate agreement, and climate finance.

(14.07.2021)

‘It Is All Connected’: Extreme Weather in the Age of Climate Change

(today)

The question is, how much did climate change affect this specific storm and the resulting floods?

A complete answer will have to await analyses, almost certain to be undertaken given the magnitude of the disaster, that will seek to learn if climate change made this storm more likely, and if so, by how much.

But for many scientists the trend is clear. “The answer is yes — all major weather these days is being affected by the changes in climate,” said Donald J. Wuebbles, a professor of atmospheric sciences at the University of Illinois.

Macron’s top-down approach to fighting climate change serves as a cautionary tale

While world leaders gather in Katowice, Poland, for the COP24 climate summit, protesters in the streets of Paris have successfully forced French President Emmanuel Macron’s hand, undercutting his efforts to impose a carbon tax on French energy sales. Macron has made climate change and lowering greenhouse gases a central component of both his domestic and foreign policies, only to face dramatic failure at the hands of his „yellow vest“ countrymen.

France’s fuel tax retreat dismays COP24 climate talks

France’s sudden U-turn over an unpopular fuel tax in the face of violent anti-government protests sent shivers through the COP24 climate summit.

That’s because the sight of one of Europe’s most climate ambitious countries beating a hasty retreat over a proposal that would have hiked gasoline tax by 4 cents, or just under 3 percent, highlighted the difficulty of imposing any economic pain in the name of tackling climate change.
