Why We, Palestinians and Israelis, Insist on Mourning Our Dead Together

(22.05.2019)

Mourning is a personal matter. When it comes to mourning victims of war, terror, and state-sponsored suppression, mourning is also a political matter—especially in Israel and Palestine. We, a Palestinian man from the West Bank who served 10 years in an Israeli prison and an Israeli woman who served in the Israeli army, are not supposed to care about each other’s dead. We are taught this constantly. But, out of a commitment that is both concretely political and inherently human, we have decided to reject this logic and fight for a public space in which we can feel pain for the dead on all sides.

Will Israel‘s Left Wing Form an Alliance Ahead of the New Election? First, Heads Need to Roll

„The present need calls for a big and significant left-wing bloc alongside the center,“ said Zandberg, repeating a similar call she made before the last election, which Gabbay rejected after polls held by both parties at the time showed a merger wouldn‘t increase their total number of seats.

Zandberg‘s rushed proposal also signals to left-wing voters that if such a union never comes, the fault would rest with Labor.

Other Labor member do not support a union with Meretz. „In the Labor Party‘s current condition, we need to join Kahol Lavan and run on a joint slate,“ said one of the party‘s lawmakers.

Israel‘s Brain Drain Is the Flight of the Left

The brains and the money of the left are abandoning Israel. That isn’t just a feeling, those are the facts. Benjamin Netanyahu’s supporters, who call leftists “sourpusses,” like to boast of the decline in emigration from Israel in the past several years. But when it comes to leftists, the exit numbers are worse than ever. The leftists are fleeing. It’s called brain drain. In Israel, brains and leftists are one and the same.

Israeli Soldiers Cuffed, Blindfolded and Detained Left-wing Activists Without Cause, Authority

The three were released without being questioned and without being informed whether they were suspected of anything. Israeli soldiers are not authorized to arrest Israeli civilians in the West Bank, but are entitled to detain them until the police arrive. The three said they never came in contact with the police.

The activists were members of the left-wing organizations Combatants for Peace and the Jordan Valley Coalition.

Pamela Anderson: Assange Is a Scapegoat, Not a Criminal

So you say Julian is to blame for Hillary’s defeat? Well, then I’ve got news for you: When the truth was exposed about Hillary, most voters did not like what they saw. Did Julian disclose the evidence? Sure, that’s what investigative journalists do. But should he be persecuted and jailed for that? No, that’s what repressive dictatorships do. While Julian may have influenced the election, he certainly has not interfered with it. Hillary lost the election herself, simply because the Electoral College resulted in a majority for Trump. And if you believe the culprits were Russian hackers, well then sort it out with the Kremlin, but keep your hands off our freedom of the press!

Jacobin editor Bhaskar Sunkara makes a fool of himself

Politically, the most obvious conclusion to be drawn from the interview is that Sunkara is little more than a moderate Democrat. For this he receives the praise of the Democratic and Republican commentators.

While proclaiming his support for the presidential campaign of Bernie Sanders, Sunkara also declares that he will back Elizabeth Warren if she beats out Sanders and Joe Biden if he is eventually the Democratic Party nominee. “I think the mentality has to be to call for people to vote for Joe Biden, especially in swing states,” he states. It is necessary “to avoid a third-party candidacy”—that is, any break from the Democratic Party—on the basis of the “strategic knowledge and commitment to getting rid of Trump.”

Sunkara adds, “Even a Biden presidency would be great” because there “will be plenty of room for socialists to be opposition.” There are, in other words, positions to be acquired.

The United States of Socialism? A debate with Jacobin editor Bhaskar Sunkara

Why is socialism having a moment in America right now — and is it the future of the political left? This week on “The Argument,” Michelle Goldberg talks with Bhaskar Sunkara, the editor of Jacobin magazine, about his new book, “The Socialist Manifesto.” They discuss what distinguishes democratic socialists from liberals, the failures of past socialist movements and why Sunkara favors Bernie Sanders over Elizabeth Warren in 2020.

Then, Ross Douthat and David Leonhardt join Michelle to debate socialism’s role on the political left.

DAN HODGES: Is Labour about to declare itself the party of the smug metropolitan elite?

Someone needs to wake up and recognise that fact. Labour is preparing to abandon the North. It’s preparing to abandon millions of supporters who have helped sustain the party over generations.

And it’s about to create a political vacuum that will see what’s left of a once-proud party implode.

The Iron Saj? Javid reveals he is ready to take Britain out the EU with No Deal and RULES OUT backing a second referendum or calling general election

His 5-point blueprint

1. ‚No, no, no‘ to a second referendum, early general election or revoking Article 50.

2. Prepare fully for No Deal, including an emergency Budget, to show EU we are not afraid of walking away.

3. Accept deal will only get through Parliament if Irish backstop is amended to include time limit or exit clause.

4. Build trust with Dublin and agree to cover cost of implementing new border technology.

5. Get revised deal through Parliament by October 31 – or leave without one, having done everything to minimise disruption.

No Deal? No fear! Public opinion swings behind hard Brexit as voters flock to back Tory frontrunner Boris Johnson because of his uncompromising stance on leaving EU

Leaving the European Union without a deal will pose no threat to public safety, the Security Minister has declared – as a new Mail on Sunday poll shows voters are becoming less concerned about the effects of a hard Brexit.

A total of 45 per cent agree that a No Deal scenario is ‚nothing to fear‘ or would cause only ‚short term problems‘ with ‚few or no consequences for the UK‘.

Michael Gove tells Cabinet ministers he is prepared to delay Brexit until late 2020

The Environment Secretary has told colleagues that a no-deal Brexit in October risks triggering a General Election that will put Jeremy Corbyn in Downing Street.

His position puts him directly at odds with other Brexiteer leadership candidates including Boris Johnson, the former foreign secretary, who have committed to leaving on time with or without a deal.

Any Tory who won‘t take us out of the EU by October 31st doesn‘t deserve to be PM

As this list has grown and grown, what has gone missing is the important point that this leadership election is about picking the next Prime Minister. Those who have thrown their hats into the ring, with minimum support but imbued with an enormous sense of self-worth, need to think a little more carefully.
