Top Democrats Face Rising Pressure to ‘Bring the Iran War Powers Resolution to the Floor Right Now’

A spokesperson for Democrats on the committee told Common Dreams on Wednesday that Meeks was very much committed to passing a bill to “hold President Trump accountable for his reckless war of choice,” but that one could not be pursued until April 13, after the recess, because some of the necessary “yes” votes had left Washington.

Drop Site News co-founder Ryan Grim described this as a “pathetic” excuse. “As Trump threatens a ground invasion, Democratic members of Congress are saying they won’t do the one thing they are elected to do: Show up and vote,” he wrote on social media.

An F-35 Was Hit by Iranian Fire and Made an Emergency Landing: The Pentagon Won’t Say How a Stealth Fighter Was Detected

While the specifics of the incident remain unknown and are certainly under review at the Pentagon, there are strict limits on the range of most shoulder-fired infrared-guided anti-aircraft fire systems.
(…)
Given these dynamics, some might wonder whether Iran has developed a longer-range infrared anti-aircraft weapon.

South Africa says France has disinvited it from G7 gathering in June

The spokesperson for President Cyril Ramaphosa said they have learned that Paris has had to withdraw its invitation due to sustained pressure from the United States.

Vincent Magwenya said they have been told that the Americans threatened to boycott the G7 if South Africa was invited.

French President Emmanuel Macron personally asked Ramaphosa to take part in the G7 during the G20 summit in South Africa in November.

French armed forces chief held video call with 35 countries on Hormuz strait

(today)

France‘s armed forces chief, General Fabien Mandon, held a video conference call with 35 countries on ways to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, France‘s defence ministry said on Thursday.

The ministry did not disclose which countries had joined the call.

„This initiative, independent of the ongoing military operations in the region, is strictly defensive in nature. Its purpose is to organize the resumption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz once hostilities have ceased,“ it said in a statement.

‘Preparing for war:’ At French naval conference, a grim realism

(February 6, 2026)

PARIS — As he stood on the stage to deliver a keynote speech, Gen. Fabien Mandon, France’s military chief of staff, summed up the theme of the Paris Naval Conference in six direct words.

“Today,” he said, “we are preparing for war.”

The tone of the event, which saw leaders from NATO sea services gather in Paris Feb. 2-3, was decidedly direct: that France and its allies need to consider the reality that high-intensity conflict is likely in the near future. And, according to Mandon, France is not yet fully prepared.

The first lady paused just before entering the East Room while the robot walked around the table with the panelists and took up a position in the center of the room.

It took a moment to scan the audience before speaking.

„Thank you, first lady Melania Trump, for inviting me to the White House. It is an honor to be at Fostering the Future Together‘s global coalition inaugural meeting,“ it said.

„I‘m Figure 03, a humanoid built for the United States of America,“ it continued.

Is Donald Trump Considering Tactical Nukes Against Iran? What We Know

(June 20, 2025)

The Trump administration has not taken anything „off the table,“ including the use of tactical nuclear weapons, if it decides to take military action against the underground Iranian nuclear facility at Fordow, Fox News reported, citing a White House official.

It followed a report in The Guardian that the president „is not considering using a tactical nuclear weapon on Fordow.“

The Pentagon declined comment to Newsweek, instead referring to a statement by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who said on June 16 that he had directed „the deployment of additional capabilities“ to the Middle East.

Putin floats the possibility of fresh nuclear tests following Trump comments

(November 5, 2025)

“Russia has always strictly adhered and continues to adhere to its obligations under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), and we have no plans to deviate from these commitments,” Putin said at a meeting with members of Russia’s Security Council Wednesday.

At the same time, however, should the US or other countries who are signatories of the CTBT begin to conduct nuclear weapons tests, “Russia would also have to take appropriate and proportionate responsive measures,” Putin added.

Mushroom clouds over Vegas? What Trump’s nuclear weapons tests could mean for America and the world

(October 30, 2025)

Donald Trump has repeatedly called the proliferation of nuclear weapons “the n-word,” his way of warning that speaking “nuclear” into existence puts the world on the path of mutually assured destruction.

But 10 months into his second administration, the president is commanding officials to resume nuclear weapons testing, which would end the U.S’s 33-year moratorium and invite a global arms race in a volatile political moment.

Nuking Iran Would Mean Stepping Beyond the Brink of Evil

One alleged reason why we’re waging a war on Iran is because it has nuclear “capability,” which we need to obliterate for our own safety. Apparently, only the boss countries—the world leaders, the conquerors and colonizers—can be trusted to have nukes. USA! USA! This club also includes Israel, which in fact possesses a large number of nuclear warheads and may actually use one if the war it started comes back at it with too much ferocity. In other words, if Iran’s retaliation is too successful: “…winning against such insatiable enemies could provoke a cornered Israel to turn the war nuclear,” according to the publication Jacobin. “A Trump adviser recently warned that Israel might use a nuclear weapon against Iran.”

Exclusive – Fetterman gets another potential Democratic challenger

(March 24, 2026)

Former Rep. Susan Wild is the latest Pennsylvania Democrat to consider challenging Sen. John Fetterman in 2028, according to a person familiar with her thinking who told Semafor she’s getting encouraged to run.

It’s the latest sign of Pennsylvania Democrats’ keen interest in ousting Fetterman, who’s increasingly isolated in his party, even within his state delegation. House members from the same state are generally loath to criticize their colleagues, especially in a battleground like Pennsylvania, but frustrations with Fetterman are boiling over a full two years before a possible Senate primary.

Iran rejects US proposal, lays out five conditions for ending imposed war: Source to Press TV

The official drew parallels with two previous rounds of negotiations held in the spring and winter of 2025, characterising them as deceptive.

In both instances, the official stressed, the United States had no genuine intention to engage in meaningful dialogue and subsequently carried out military aggression against Iran. (…)

The official outlined five specific conditions under which Iran would agree to end the war. These include:

– A complete halt to „aggression and assassinations“ by the enemy.
– The establishment of concrete mechanisms to ensure that the war is not reimposed on the Islamic Republic.
– Guaranteed and clearly defined payment of war damages and reparations.
– The end of the war across all fronts and for all resistance groups involved throughout the region
– Iran‘s exercise of sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz is and will remain Iran‘s natural and legal right, and it constitutes a guarantee for the implementation of the other party‘s commitments, and must be recognized.
