The Rich Promised to Flee Mamdani’s New York. They Haven’t.

One of the strongest indicators of whether people or businesses are actually fleeing from a city is the housing and real estate market. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when many residents really did leave New York for the surrounding suburbs and other states, the city’s vacancy rates soared and rents dropped with demand, leading to “COVID discounts” at the height of the pandemic. This trend was even more extreme for the city’s commercial real estate, where vacancy rates doubled as more companies adopted remote work and shed office space.

Today nearly every indicator points to the opposite problem: demand is running hot and supply is lagging badly, especially when it comes to housing.

Columbia Student Is Released From ICE After Mamdani-Trump Meeting

It was the clearest sign yet that Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who has vocally opposed Mr. Trump on immigration enforcement matters, holds enough sway with the president to bend a highly charged situation through personal relationship and persuasion.

Elmina Aghayeva, GS ’26, released from ICE custody, after Mamdani, Trump talks

Aghayeva’s release comes after Mamdani shared his concerns about her arrest with Trump, after which the president informed him “that she will be released imminently,” Mamdani wrote in a Thursday afternoon X post. Mamdani’s advocacy came during an unannounced meeting about housing with Trump at the White House.

Columbia celebrated the news in a Thursday X post, writing that it was “thrilled” about Aghayeva’s release. The University added that it would have “additional details” to share Thursday evening.

(…)

A DHS official wrote in a Thursday statement to Spectator that the DHS terminated Aghayeva’s student visa in 2016 during the administration of President Barack Obama, CC ’83, for “failing to attend classes.”

“Ultimately, it’s for the good of New York,” Trump said, of the two men’s goals. “I don’t care about affiliations or parties or anything else. … If he could be a spectacular success, I’d be very happy.”

Trump said he and Mamdani discussed crime in New York City, without getting bogged down in their political differences over ICE.

“What we did is we discussed crime, more than ICE per se, we discussed crime. He doesn’t want to see crime and I don’t want to see crime,” Trump said. “And I have very little doubt that we’re not going to get along on that issue.”

“We will make that decision, likely in late January or early February, shortly after we see the governor’s executive budget proposal,” Gripper said. “She’s going to have to prove to her own party why she shouldn’t be primaried.”

Election Day 2025: Race for NYC mayor, New Jersey governor and more | Live updates

Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa are all vying to become the 111th mayor of New York, the economic and cultural capital of the country.

And Mikie Sherrill and Jack Ciattarelli are running against each other to become New Jersey‘s governor in a contentious race that has gained considerable national attention.

New Jersey is one of only two gubernatorial races across the country, and since it comes one year after a presidential election and one year before the midterm elections, it is often seen as an indicator how both the White House and Congress are doing.

Running to Hochul’s left, Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado says tax hikes on the wealthiest may be on the table

(June 18, 2025)

Earlier Wednesday, Gov. Hochul told Pix 11, “I don’t want to lose more people to Palm Beach“ when asked about New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani’s plan to raise taxes. Delgado referenced the governor’s comment when explaining his own position on taxes.

“All options should be on the table, and the notion that we wouldn’t contemplate raising taxes on the super wealthy, or that we wouldn’t contemplate making sure that larger corporations pay more into the system, to me, is the exact type of ‘maintain the status quo, do what you need to do just to maintain power’ as opposed to actually thinking about what is required,” he stated.

Hochul has raised corporate taxes, but has held the line on raising new income taxes.

In Final Debate, NYC Mayoral Candidates Condemn ICE Raid on Street Vendors

Mamdani tied the raids to the city’s failure to pass a package of street vendor reform legislation that would lift the cap on street vendor permits. Currently, there are over 10,000 people waiting for vending permits.

“What we need to do is actually pass the street vending reform bills that have been in the city council, some of which this mayor has actually overridden,” said Mamdani. “That’s an example of how we can both protect street vendors, ensure quality of life, and leave no stone unturned in delivering for the people of the city, as opposed to working with the president, who is looking to declare war on those same people.”
