His announcement comes after the US Supreme Court last week rejected his request to allow him to deploy the guard to Chicago to protect ICE agents as part of the administration’s ongoing immigration crackdown.
LIVE: Israel’s ban on 37 aid groups kicks in, Gaza starts 2026 with despair
Israel’s decision to revoke the licences of 37 international NGOs, including Doctors Without Borders, known by its French initials MSF, has come into effect as the Israeli government pushes to demonise organisations that assist Palestinians, among them United Nations agencies, with unproven accusations of links to Hamas.
People in Gaza have started 2026 not with hope or certainty, but with despair as they face more Israeli restrictions amid a humanitarian catastrophe, Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud reports from Gaza City.
UN chief condemns Israeli amendments targeting UNRWA operations
The UN Secretary-General has condemned amendments adopted by Israel’s Knesset to a law aimed at ceasing the operations of the UN agency assisting Palestine refugees (UNRWA), saying the measures must be immediately repealed.
The amendments, adopted on 29 December, to the Law to Cease UNRWA Operations “seek to further impede UNRWA’s ability to operate and carry out its mandated activities,” said a statement issued by the Spokesperson for Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
“The Law and its amendments are inconsistent with the status and international legal framework applicable to UNRWA and must be immediately repealed,” it added.
Another child dies in extreme conditions in Gaza: UNICEF

The development comes as aid agencies urged Israeli authorities to reconsider revoking the licences of dozens of humanitarian partners that provide assistance across the devastated enclave from 1 January.

Videos released in Epstein files raise fresh questions about jail footage
Specifics about what cameras were and were not operating comes mostly from a 2023 report by the Department of Justice‘s Office of the Inspector General.
(…)
Among the files released by the Justice Department on Dec. 24 were more than 400 one-hour clips of surveillance videos from MCC. The footage spans non-sequential, seemingly arbitrary time periods dating back to July 5, 2019, more than a month before Epstein‘s death.
According to internal DOJ emails included in the disclosure, the surveillance system was configured to retain only 30 days of footage. That raises an immediate question: Why do videos from July 5 exist at all?
(…)
The new cache of video also includes footage from five more cameras inside the prison. Most notably, the release includes several hours of footage from a camera previously described as non-recording. It provides an unobstructed view of the primary entrance to the SHU and the stairs leading to Epstein‘s tier.
The four non-sequential one-hour videos from this camera are all dated Aug. 12, 2019 — two days after Epstein‘s death. However, Department of Justice correspondence states that the surveillance system stopped recording on July 29 and was not repaired until Aug, 14.
US Bombed Seven Countries in 2025 as Trump Dramatically Expanded Airstrikes
According to a report from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data (ACLED) released earlier this year, Trump launched nearly as many airstrikes in just his first five months in office as President Biden did during his entire four-year term.
If Trump’s claims of a Christmas Eve attack on Venezuela and reports that it was a CIA drone strike are true, the US has bombed seven countries this year, on top of the airstrikes targeting alleged drug boats in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific Ocean.
US Imposes More Venezuela Oil Sanctions on Four Companies and Four Tankers
The US Treasury Department on Wednesday imposed sanctions on four companies and their associated oil tankers for allegedly transporting Venezuelan oil as the Trump administration seeks to escalate its pressure on the country.
The new sanctions come after the US seized two tankers off the coast of Venezuela that were carrying Venezuelan oil, cargo that President Trump has said the US intends to keep, an action that amounts to outright theft.
US military says at least eight killed in new strikes on alleged drug boats, with survivors abandoning ship
On New Year’s Eve, US Southern Command said the military struck two boats “operated by Designated Terrorist Organizations,” killing five people.
The day before, Tuesday, the US struck what it described as a “convoy” of three boats participating in the trafficking of narcotics, SOUTHCOM announced in a post to X on Wednesday. Three people aboard one boat were killed, while those in the other two abandoned their vessel.
SOUTHCOM said it notified the US Coast Guard after Tuesday’s strike to activate search and rescue efforts. It’s unclear whether any survivors have been recovered.
