Israel kills one more Palestinian journalist in Gaza

Israel killed another journalist, Mohammed al-Dayah, in Gaza on Saturday, raising the death toll of journalists since the start of the conflict to 252, the Gaza Government Media Office said.

The office condemned Israel’s “systematic targeting and killing of Palestinian journalists” and urged international press bodies and journalist unions to speak out against the attacks.

The Palestinian Information Centre paid tribute to al-Dayah, describing him as “one of the centre’s distinguished journalists.”

EU Commission’s Ribera says Israel’s war on Gaza is genocide

Teresa Ribera, the European Commission’s executive vice president, also said Europe was too divided to do anything about the starvation, displacement and killing of Palestinians.

“The genocide in Gaza exposes Europe’s failure to act and speak with one voice, even as protests spread across European cities and 14 U.N. Security Council members call for an immediate ceasefire,” Ribera told students at Sciences Po in a speech Thursday morning.

HRF and PCHR File ICC Complaint on the Nasser Hospital Massacre: Exposing the Command Chain Behind the Killing of 22 Civilians

(August 31, 2025)

Today, the Hind Rajab Foundation (HRF) and the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) submitted a formal complaint to the International Criminal Court (ICC) regarding the massacre at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis on 25 August 2025. The attack killed 22 civilians, including five journalists, three hospital staff, one doctor, a civil defense worker, and one child, 14-year-old Rayan Omar Mahmoud Abu Omar. More than fifty others were injured in what can only be described as a deliberate double-tap strike carried out with full knowledge of the civilian presence.

The Hunt for Anas Al-Sharif’s Killers: HRF and PCHR Bring Israel’s War on Journalists to the ICC

(August 12, 2025)

Following the Chain of Command

When HRF investigators began reconstructing the strike, they followed the trail from the moment a drone camera locked onto Al-Sharif’s position to the instant the missile hit.
Using operational patterns, signals intelligence reports, and expert military analysis, the foundation identified the chain of command behind the killing:

– Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir – IDF Chief of the General Staff
– Maj.-Gen. Tomer Bar – Commander of the Israeli Air Force
– Maj.-Gen. Yaniv Asor – Southern Command Commander
– Brig.-Gen. Yossi Sariel – Former Commander of Unit 8200 (Israel’s signals intelligence branch)
– General A. : Current Commander of Unit 8200
– Palmachim Airbase Commander – Name undisclosed
– “Black Snake” Squadron Commander – Name undisclosed
– Col. Avichay Adraee – IDF Spokesperson’s Unit, Arab Media Division, responsible for a sustained smear campaign against Al-Sharif

Pedro Sánchez: Europe’s response to war in Gaza has been a failure

“What we’re now witnessing in Gaza is perhaps one of the darkest episodes of international relations in the 21st century, and in this regard what I have to say is that Spain has been very vocal within the EU and also within the international community,” he said. “Within the EU, what we have done so far is advocate to suspend the strategic partnership that the EU has with Israel.”

In a world first, over 250 media black out their front pages and broadcasting programmes to protest the killing of journalists in Gaza

In an unprecedented international operation organised by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the global campaigning movement Avaaz, more than 250 news outlets from over 70 countries will simultaneously black out their front pages and website homepages, and interrupt their broadcasting to condemn the murder of journalists by the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip. Together, these newsrooms demand an end to impunity for Israeli crimes against Gaza’s reporters, the emergency evacuation of reporters seeking to leave the Strip and that foreign press be granted independent access to the territory.

Over 210 journalists killed in Gaza: RSF and Avaaz call on media worldwide to stage major operation on 1 September

On 25 August, one of these strikes targeted a building in the al-Nasser medical complex in central Gaza, a known workplace for reporters, killing five journalists and staff members of local and international media outlets such as Reuters and the Associated Press. Two weeks earlier, on the night of 10 August, an Israeli strike killed six reporters, including Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif, who was the intended target.

According to RSF data, more than 210 journalists have been killed by the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip in nearly 23 months of Israeli military operations in the Palestinian territory. At least 56 of them were intentionally targeted by the Israeli army or killed while doing their job. This ongoing massacre of Palestinian journalists requires a large-scale operation highly visible to the general public. With this unprecedented mobilisation planned for 1 September, RSF renews its call for urgent protection for Palestinian media professionals in the Gaza Strip, a demand endorsed by over 200 media outlets and organisations in June. The NGO also calls for foreign press to be granted independent access to the Strip, which Israeli authorities have so far denied.

Informal meeting of foreign affairs ministers: press remarks by High Representative Kaja Kallas after the meeting

(August 30, 2025)

Q. Can you point to one concrete step regarding Israel that the countries actually agreed on today. After today‘s meeting, do you expect a more unified EU putting pressure on Israel and taking concrete steps?

First, we had an informal Council, so that means that we actually do not adopt decisions here, but we really have the political debates on where is the room. So, no decisions today.

Still no EU action on Israel, despite Gaza famine

Most Israel sanctions options – such as blacklisting settlers, banning settler imports, or imposing an arms embargo – required EU consensus, meaning the Czechs and Israel‘s other top EU ally, Hungary, would veto them.

Some options – such as freezing Horizon or Israel‘s EU free-trade perks – could be done by a qualified majority in the EU Council, but there was no majority without Germany and Italy on board.

Open Letter co-signed by 206 former EU and Member State Ambassadors and Senior Staff: Calling for immediate implementation of EU measures against Israel’s unlawful actions in Gaza & the West Bank

We, a group now comprising 206 former EU and Member State ambassadors and senior officials, are writing in furtherance of the nine proposed EU actions that we compiled in our open letter of 28 July, in response to the Israeli government’s unlawful actions in Gaza and the West Bank, following Hamas’ heinous attacks on 7 October 2023. We note with dismay that, in the ensuing four weeks since our letter, no ceasefire has been agreed in Gaza, no Israeli hostages
have been released, and, alarmingly, the Israeli government has begun implementing plans to empty Gaza City and its environs of one million Palestinians, by forcing them into concentration areas in the south, in preparation for possible large-scale deportations to third countries with the risk of fomenting a migration crisis. If this was not bad enough the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) confirmed on 22 August that a man-made famine now exists in these same areas of Gaza, with half a million people there facing starvation, destitution and death. Malnutrition now threatens the lives of 132,000 children under five through June 2026 and by the end of September 2025 it is estimated
that 640,000 people (a third of the population) will face catastrophic levels of food insecurity. Tragically, already over 200 Gazan citizens, including over 60 children, have succumbed to malnutrition-related deaths. Furthermore:

● Estimates suggest that just since our letter of 28 July more than 2,600 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, many of them women and children, with over 12,000 injured;

That compares to a previous letter sent in July, which had 58 signatures.

Israel is systematically killing witnesses to genocide: Journalist

“Israel is trying to systematically murder the witnesses to its genocidal actions, to the burning of children alive in tents, to the forced starvation of people and massive bombing of whole cities, razing them to the ground,” he told Al Jazeera from Zadar in Croatia.

Scahill said the “double tap” strike used by Israel to kill the journalists at Nasser Hospital was pioneered by the US during the infamous “war on terror” – when an initial drone strike would be followed by another attack to kill those trying to help the victims.

He said Western news organisations also contributed to “systematically dehumanising” Palestinians from the start of the war, and “serving as conveyor belts for the lies of an Israeli regime intent on wiping Palestinians off the map”.

Sixth Palestinian journalist confirmed killed by Israel on Monday: Gaza media office

A sixth journalist is now confirmed killed by Israel on Monday.

Prominent investigative journalist Hassan Douhan was the editor-in-chief of Gaza‘s al-Hayat al-Jadida, and trained many rising journalists in the enclave.

He was shot dead by Israeli soldiers in Khan Younis, according to the Gaza media office.

In addition to the five journalists killed earlier in the day in the bombing of Nasser Hospital, the total number of Palestinian journalists killed since 7 October 2023 now stands at 246.
