US official says Washington may advance Saudi deal without Israel: Reports
According to The Jerusalem Post, the US official told attendees Israel could face “a much heavier price” if it continues to oppose a ceasefire deal.
“President Trump is determined to move forward with a significant deal with Saudi Arabia, even without Israeli involvement,” the official reportedly said. “The ceasefire agreement with the Houthis is just a prelude. If Israel doesn’t come to its senses, even the ‘Deal of the Millennium’ will happen without it.”
The report said families of the captives hoped the meeting would result in greater international pressure on Israeli leaders to act.
Trump says he is not planning to visit Israel as part of upcoming trip
(May 6, 2025)
While the White House has never confirmed that Israel would be part of his upcoming trip, there have been widespread rumors in diplomatic and national security circles that he would extend his trip to visit the U.S. ally.
Russia’s 72-hour ‘Victory Day’ truce begins
The pause in fighting, set to last until midnight on May 10–11, has been described as a humanitarian gesture marking the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany. The Kremlin says the ceasefire also aims to create space for direct peace talks with Ukraine, without preconditions.
”Yes, this is an initiative by the Russian side, by President Putin. It remains in force,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed on Wednesday, stressing that Moscow is committed to honoring the truce despite Ukraine’s record-breaking drone assault ahead of its start.

For Jack Appel, 101, the Allies‘ victory in Europe − made official on May 8, 1945 − wasn‘t just vital because otherwise, as he said, „we‘d all be speaking German now.“
„World War II was a major, major fight for civilization,“ the World War II veteran told USA TODAY this week as the globe marks the 80th anniversary of V-E Day.

What a ‘peace summit’ reveals about the state of the Israeli left
To be clear, these words are not written out of cynicism; I truly hold deep appreciation for the organizers of the conference and its many participants. I have no doubt of their good intentions and sincere commitment to changing our horrific reality. Yet as Israel systematically starves people in Gaza’s extermination camp, the Israeli left can no longer remain in its comfort zone.
What good are dialogue workshops, discussions about the sanctity of Jerusalem, interfaith prayers, or panels on political solutions while a genocide rages? These are privileged distractions we can no longer afford. To transform reality, we must first stare directly at its horrors and name them without flinching. If this conference cannot even convene a single panel on Gaza’s genocide, much less demand an end to complicity in it, how can it hope to drive the change it claims to pursue?
Die Zombie-Linke
(January 20, 2020)
