As thousands across the US take to the streets for another day of protests demanding justice for George Floyd, more than 17,000 members of the National Guard are standing ready to support local law enforcement.
That represents approximately the same number of active duty troops deployed in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan.
As of Monday, nearly half of the US has activated guard members to respond to civil unrest.

The “battle space” of America??? Not what America needs to hear…ever, unless we are invaded by an adversary or experience a constitutional failure…ie a Civil War…
America’s military, our sons and daughters, will place themselves at risk to protect their fellow citizens. Their job is unimaginably hard overseas; harder at home. Respect them, for they respect you. America is not a battleground. Our fellow citizens are not the enemy. #BeBetter
CBP is the largest law enforcement agency in the country, & it very well may be one of the most dangerous. They do NOT have oversight. Not even the measures local PDs have. Their culture is toxic, they have 0 accountability,& Congress gave them a blank check. This is dangerous.

The NYPD is run by an illegal union, the Police Benevolent Association (PBA). Have the city stop empowering it by refusing to deduct their dues money from cop‘s paychecks every pay period. And, ban union delegates from station houses.
Cuomo is absolutely right. @NYCMayor and #NYPD, were focused on the protesters instead the organized looters using the protests as cover to create havoc.
The vast majority of protesters are peaceful. They are separate & distinct from the criminals who are opportunistically using this situation for their own purposes. Criminal activity & looting MUST stop. Not only is it illegal—it distracts from the point of the protests.
Live Protest Updates: Police Scanner Broadcasts Calls To Shoot And Run Over Protesters
1:40 p.m. As tens of thousands of peaceful marchers flooded New York City streets Monday evening, just before 7 p.m, NYPD officers were overheard chattering on the citywide police scanner threatening physical violence against protesters.
At around 6:20 p.m., marchers headed to the 77th Precinct in Brooklyn and had surrounded it. One person called in to describe the scene.
“There’s a group headed the 77th Precinct there’s a group, may be heading towards there please.”
Another voice responds: “Shoot those motherfuckers.”
Cuomo calls on NYPD to ‘do a better job,’ slams de Blasio as looting and unrest rock NYC
Gov. Cuomo said Tuesday the NYPD and Mayor de Blasio must “do a better job” at curbing looting and violence erupting amid civil unrest over police brutality against African-Americans.
“The police in New York City were not effective at doing their job last night. Period,” the governor said during a press briefing in Albany. “They have to do a better job.“
Arlington County withdraws police from DC after being ‚put in a compromising position‘
„The County is re-evaluating the agreements that allowed our officers to be put in a compromising position that endangered their health and safety, and that of the people around them, for a purpose not worthy of our mutual aid obligations,” the statement reads.

A U.S. military helicopter used a „show of force“ maneuver as protesters gathered in Washington, D.C. on Monday night. It‘s a tactic often conducted by low-flying jets in combat zones to scare away insurgents.
Correction: We deleted an earlier tweet that misidentified the type of military helicopter pictured using a „show of force“ maneuver. It was a Lakota, not a Black Hawk. A Black Hawk was also seen using the tactic in Washington on Monday.

Live updates: Trump poses for photos at church after police gas, force out peaceful protesters
President Trump on Monday threatened to deploy federal troops if state and city leaders don’t act to quell acts of violence and looting amid the protests over the killing of George Floyd. Moments earlier, just outside the White House, federal authorities used rubber bullets, flash bangs and gas to clear peaceful protesters from the area. Then Trump, who walked across Lafayette Square to St. John’s Church, where a fire was set Sunday evening, held up a Bible and nodded to media cameras and posed for photos.
Trump says he will deploy military if state officials can‘t contain protest violence
The president said he was an „ally of all peaceful protesters“ as police and the National Guard forced protesters away from the White House.
I‘ve seen enough reports of this from around the country that „Police are going after peaceful protestors and ignoring looters as a deliberate strategy because they want people scared and deferential“ seems like the only viable explanation
Chicago police and city leaders defend handling of protests and looting as questions swirl over response some found lacking
Questions came over the decision to largely seal off downtown, effectively forcing some of the protest action into outlying neighborhoods, and over what appeared at times to be an outnumbered police department’s choice to stand back as looting began.
Tribune reporters observed officers who had been deployed to hot spots to contain a situation keep their posts without engaging looters.
The largest police force in America and they couldn’t prevent looting on Broadway and University Place, despite the fact people vandalized and looted here the last two nights in a row? Where is the NYPD?

Aaron Landy watched for hours on Saturday night as people on foot and then in cars moved up and down Melrose Avenue looting stores and setting them on fire, doing wheelies in the street and tagging walls with graffiti.
All the while, not a single police cruiser rolled by, Landy said, even though officers were staged in huge numbers not far away, squaring off with protesters.
Landy’s longtime Fairfax neighborhood, it seemed to him, had been completely abandoned to lawlessness.

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was arrested on Friday and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter in the death of George Floyd, but his arrest was not enough to stem the spread of protests throughout the country over the weekend.
