Jeremy Corbyn’s would-be Foreign Secretary, Emily Thornberry, has today urged the government to delay Brexit as Labour continue to try and stop the UK leaving the EU on 29th March 2019.
Thornberry today told Parliament that the “sensible, cautious” thing to do would be for the government to seek a “temporary extension of Article 50” that could allow the UK to “pursue a different path”.
Asked more specifically about Venezuela, where Guaido has called for a new, fair presidential election after the disputed vote won by President Nicolas Maduro last year, Thornberry said: „Of course there needs to be new elections, and its a question of ensuring that happens in the timely and effective way.“
The party had previously said it would „oppose outside interference“ in the country, which is in the grip of a worsening humanitarian crisis.
But the shadow home secretary said the quote was in response to „extremes“, such as threats of invasion.
