Is Israel trying to foment civil war in Lebanon?

On April 14, the Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors to the United States, Nada Hamadeh and Yechiel Leiter, met in Washington with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The goal is ostensibly to extend the ceasefire while working “on longer term disarming of Hezbollah, along with a peace deal between the countries.” During the two hours in which the meeting took place, Israel bombed at least 23 towns in southern Lebanon; afterward, Leiter said that both Israel and Lebanon were united in “liberating Lebanon” from Hezbollah.

This came less than a week after one of the most violent days in Lebanese history. On April 8, Israeli warplanes ravaged large parts of the country, killing at least 303 people and wounding 1,150.

NNA – The Ministry of Health‘s Emergency Operations Center stated that „two Israeli enemy raids on a truck and motorcycle in the town of Yohmar al-Shqif – Nabatieh district resulted in the martyrdom of 4 citizens.“

EU airlines may use ‚mixed fuel‘ amid shortages, agency says

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is developing guidance to help airlines use US-grade Jet-A fuel as Europe faces shortages linked to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a spokesperson said.

EASA said most commercial aircraft engines are certified to use both fuel types, noting that European airlines already operate with mixed fuel loads on transatlantic routes.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, when many residents really did leave New York for the surrounding suburbs and other states, the city’s vacancy rates soared and rents dropped with demand, leading to “COVID discounts” at the height of the pandemic. This trend was even more extreme for the city’s commercial real estate, where vacancy rates doubled as more companies adopted remote work and shed office space.

Today nearly every indicator points to the opposite problem: demand is running hot and supply is lagging badly, especially when it comes to housing.

Spanish parliament rejects proposal for new referendum on NATO membership

The proposal for “holding a referendum on the continuation of Spain’s NATO membership” was voted down by the ruling coalition’s main partner, the Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), as well as opposition parties including the Popular Party (PP), far-right Vox, the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV), and Junts for Catalonia.

The junior coalition partner Sumar abstained, while only the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC) and the Basque alliance Bildu supported the initiative alongside Podemos.

Doch im Grunde geht es dem spanischen Sozialdemokraten bloß darum, seine Wähler zu beeindrucken. Dass er es nicht allzu ernst meint, stellte seine Partei am Mittwoch klar. An diesem Tag stimmte das spanische Parlament auf Vorschlag von Podemos über ein mögliches Referendum zum Austritt aus der NATO ab. Die Partei von Sánchez stimmte geschlossen dagegen und demonstrierte einmal mehr ihre transatlantische Verlässlichkeit: Wir liefern weiter.

Donald Trump Angers NATO Ally U.K. Before King Charles‘ Visit with Push to Help Argentina Reclaim Falkland Islands

Reuters reported on Friday, April 24, that a recent internal Pentagon email had outlined options for the U.S. to punish NATO allies that it believes have inadequately supported its military operations in Iran.

According to the report, the Defense Department has suggested that the U.S. reassess its support for European “imperial possessions,” including the Falkland Islands, and consider suspending Spain’s NATO membership.
