Gaza death toll rises to 55,959 as Israeli continues the genocide
GAZA, June 22, 2025 (WAFA) â Medical sources said on Sunday that the death toll in the Gaza Strip has risen to 55,959, the majority of whom are children and women, since the start of the Israeli occupation‘s aggression on October 7, 2023.
The same sources added that the death toll has risen to 131,242 since the start of the aggression, while a number of victims remain under the rubble, unable to be reached by ambulance and civil defense crews.
They indicated that 51 slain people (including 3 whose bodies were recovered) and 104 injuries arrived at hospitals in the Gaza Strip in the past 24 hours.
Gaza: UN warns of âweaponised hungerâ and growing death toll amid food chaos
Speaking to journalists in Deir al Balah on Saturday, Jonathan Whittall, who heads the UN humanitarian coordination office (OCHA) in Gaza and the West Bank, said: âThe attempt to survive is being met with a death sentence.â
Since Israel eased its total blockade last month, more than 400 people are reported to have died trying to reach food distribution points.
Mr. Whittall said humanitarian agencies are capable of reaching every family in the shattered enclave but are being systematically blocked. âWe have a plan…but we are prevented from doing so at every turn.â
He described the situation as âweaponised hungerâ, âforced displacementâ, and âa death sentence for people just trying to surviveâ.
âThis is carnage,â Mr. Whittall said. âIt appears to be the erasure of Palestinian life from Gaza.â
He urged the international community to act: âWe need a lasting ceasefire, accountability, and real pressure to stop this. This is the bare minimum.â

Iraqi Defense Minister warns of firm response to any threat
On Sunday, Iraqi Defense Minister Thabet Al-Abbasi warned that the country will respond firmly to any external threat or violation of Iraqâs sovereignty when necessary.
During a visit to the 9th Armored Division, Al-Abbasi stated that Iraq is capable of protecting its territory from any external or internal threat. He further noted that plans are underway to equip the armed forces with advanced technologies, while continuing to train and cooperate with international institutions to enhance defense capabilities.
Trump administration was anticipating retaliation from Iran, White House official says
âWe knew theyâd retaliate. They had a similar response after Soleimani,â the official said, referring to Qasem Soleimani, the Iranian commander killed in a US airstrike in 2020.
The official said initial assessments were that the missiles fired by the Iranians on Monday didnât hit their intended targets. Qatarâs Defense Ministry said its air defenses intercepted an Iranian missile attack on the US air base in the country.

Iran launches missiles towards US bases in Qatar and Iraq
Iran said it launched a „devastating and powerful“ missile attack at the US‘s Al-Udeid base in Qatar on Saturday in retaliation for the US‘s strikes on their nuclear facilities over the weekend.

Video footage shared with MEE showed missiles flying above the gleaming skyscrapers and marina of the Qatari capital. In another video air defence systems appeared to be engaging the missiles.

Germany‘s Merz sees no reason to criticise Israeli, US attacks on Iran
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Monday that there was no reason for him to criticise attacks by Israel and the United States on Iran.
„There is no reason for us, or for me personally, to criticise what Israel started a week ago, nor is there any reason to criticise what America did last weekend,“ Merz said at an event organised by the BDI German industrial lobby group.
Report: Israel attacks Iran‘s Fordow nuclear site
„The aggressor attacked the Fordow nuclear site again,“ Tasnim news agency reported, quoting a spokesperson for the crisis management authority in Qom province where the site is located.
The UN nuclear watchdog says Iran had informed it about „special measures to protect nuclear material“.

Bushehr is Iran‘s only operating nuclear power plant and was built by Russia. Located on the Gulf Coast, at Bushehr, Russian fuel is used and then taken back to Russia when its spent in order to reduce nuclear proliferation risk, reported Reuters.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia has up to 600 staff at Bushehr, including 250 permanent workers and others on temporary assignment. He said Israel had issued a promise to Russia over their safety.

One of the militaryâs initial option plans, as presented to the White House by the Pentagon this winter, calls for the use of a bunker-buster tactical nuclear weapon, such as the B61-11, against underground nuclear sites. One target is Iranâs main centrifuge plant, at Natanz, nearly two hundred miles south of Tehran. Natanz, which is no longer under I.A.E.A. safeguards, reportedly has underground floor space to hold fifty thousand centrifuges, and laboratories and workspaces buried approximately seventy-five feet beneath the surface. The lack of reliable intelligence leaves military planners, given the goal of totally destroying the sites, little choice but to consider the use of tactical nuclear weapons. âEvery other option, in the view of the nuclear weaponeers, would leave a gap,â the former senior intelligence official said. â âDecisiveâ is the key word of the Air Forceâs planning. An unnamed Trump administration official told Fox News senior White House correspondent Jaqui Heinrich that „none of the options are off the table,“ denying a Guardian report that said the president was „not considering using a tactical nuclear weapon“ on Iran‘s heavily entrenched Fordow nuclear site.
Trump‘s reported consideration of a nuclear option comes amid internal concerns that the 30,000-pound bunker-buster bombs the U.S. possesses within striking distance of Iran would be insufficient to destroy Fordow.
