Relief is on the way for Georgia drivers who have been feeling the pain at the gas pump. Gov. Brian Kemp has signed a bill that temporarily suspends the state‘s gas tax for 60 days.
On Thursday, the Senate passed House Bill 1199 with a 51-0 vote, sending the bill to Kemp‘s desk for his signature. Officials are hoping that putting it on pause will help lower fuel prices.
Gasoline prices are up in every state since the U.S. and Israel launched attacks on Iran at the end of February, according to AAA’s average fuel prices. Those with particularly competitive races like Arizona, Georgia, Wisconsin and Michigan have seen price jumps of at least $1 per gallon.

Kemp, a onetime ally of the former president, stirred Trump’s ire following the 2020 presidential election after he rebuffed his pleas to overturn President Biden’s electoral victory in Georgia. Trump vowed to campaign against Kemp, eventually persuading Perdue to enter the race for governor in hopes of ousting him.
But despite carrying Trump’s endorsement, Perdue struggled to gain traction among Georgia Republican voters.

When a voter requests an absentee ballot on a paper application, he or she must sign it. Election officials compare that signature to the signature in voter registration files before a ballot is sent to the voter, Raffensperger said.

The supervisor, Marcia Ridley of the Spalding County Board of Elections, had initially attributed the problem to a vendor’s 11th-hour update to the equipment. But log files for the devices — electronic poll books that poll workers use to sign in voters at precincts — show that no such update occurred to the devices the night before Election Day, Ridley said in a statement to POLITICO on Thursday. However, she said she stands by her previous statements last week that a representative for the election technology vendor, Dominion Voting Systems, told her office that it had uploaded some kind of update the night before the election and that this had created the glitch.
The party’s 2024 hopefuls are set to blanket the Peach State ahead of the Jan. 5 runoff elections, but GOP senators say they hope that Trump, who is locked in a myriad of legal challenges surrounding the presidential race, is able to lend his megaphone to help hold onto the Senate majority.

The Spalding County Sheriff‘s Office wrote in a Facebook post Tuesday that „the computers at all polling locations across Spalding County are down. The problem is being worked on and hopefully will be resolved quickly. Until the issue is fixed, paper ballots are being used at all locations.“
A spokesperson for Dominion Voting Systems, the voting equipment manufacturer that was awarded a contract by Georgia state officials to implement new voting systems last year, told The Hill that the company had “tech support onsite to assist the county with real-time help and all challenges are being addressed as quickly as possible.”
