War on Gaza: Former French president Hollande calls Gaza dead ‘collateral victims’

The comments were made on Wednesday during a ceremony in Paris, after a journalist asked whether there was a double standard in the reaction to killings in Israel and in Gaza and whether the latter also deserved a tribute.

In a widely circulated response, Hollande said: “It cannot be the same tribute. A life is a life and one life is equivalent to another but there are victims of terrorism and victims of war. Being a victim of terrorism means being attacked as a French person or as a defender of a way of life. A collateral victim, you are in war
 it‘s not of the same nature.”

Pressefreiheit: Frankreich nimmt Journalist*innen in die Mangel

Im Fokus der aktuellen Debatte steht die französische Journalistin Ariane Lavrilleux. Sie deckte 2021 fĂŒr das Magazin „Disclose“ auf, dass der französische MilitĂ€rgeheimdienst DRM mit der Ă€gyptischen Regierung zusammenarbeitete und dabei auch indirekt an Hinrichtungen beteiligt war.

Wegen dieser Recherche wurde die Journalistin am Dienstag festgenommen. Beamte des französischen Inlandsgeheimdienstes durchsuchten ihre Wohnung sowie ihre digitalen GerĂ€te. Anschließend wurde Lavrilleux auf einer Polizeiwache verhört und kam erst nach 39 Stunden wieder frei. Die Sicherheitsbehörden sind wohl auch auf der Suche nach Lavrilleuxs Quelle. Dieser drohen laut SĂŒddeutscher Zeitung wegen Landesverrats bis zu sieben Jahre Haft.

AREVA and EDF sign agreements related to Saudi nuclear program

This coincided with French President François Hollande’s visit to Riyadh.

The two companies have signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with 5 Saudi industrial partners (Zamil Steel, Bahra Cables, Riyadh Cables, Saudi Pumps, Descon Olayan).

These agreements aim to develop the industrial and technical skills of local companies. They reflect AREVA and EDF‘s desire to build an extended network of Saudi suppliers for future nuclear projects in the country.

Ohne die IntegritĂ€t von BBC-Reporter Mark Urban in Zweifel ziehen zu wollen: meiner EinschĂ€tzung nach handelt es sich bei diesen (auch ihm gegenĂŒber) gezielt gestreuten entsprechenden Informationen ĂŒber Pakistan als Quelle der saudischen Atombombe um “operative Informationen”, wie man im Apparat zu Deutschland zu sagen pflegt, um solche Begriffe wie “psychologische KriegfĂŒhrung” oder schlicht “LĂŒge” zu vermeiden bzw aufzuhĂŒbschen.

Meiner EinschĂ€tzung nach bieten sich statt Pakistan zwei weitere expansive, kriegfĂŒhrende, imperialistische und skrupellose Atom- und KolonialmĂ€chte fĂŒr die Proliferation von Atomwaffen bzw der dafĂŒr notwendigen Technologie nach Saudi-Arabien an: Israel und Frankreich

France’s sabotage of a compromise agreement on Iran’s nuclear program is a textbook case of how the new Saudi-Israeli alliance can disrupt President Barack Obama’s strategy for resolving Middle East disputes through diplomacy, not war.

Over the summer, Saudi officials including intelligence chief Prince Bandar bin Sultan visited European capitals dangling financial deals and energy concessions to countries if they would line up behind Saudi and Israeli desires for military intervention in the Syrian civil war and heightened economic warfare against Iran.

The carrots were particularly appealing to the French who are struggling with a sluggish economy, high unemployment and a recent credit downgrade. So, the flash of Saudi petro-dollars got the attention of the French government.

Student sets himself on fire in France over struggle of living on ÂŁ388 a month

The 22-year-old man posted on social media about his financial difficulties just hours before he attempted to self-immolate in front of a university restaurant in Lyon on Saturday.

The man, who is a student at Lyon 2 University, said he could no longer carry on living on €450 (£388) a month.

France‘s national assembly votes to extend state of emergency

It is the fourth time that parliament has proposed prolonging the state of emergency, and the move now needs to be approved by the Senate.

President Francois Hollande had last Thursday announced a plan to lift the emergency measures, but he changed tack hours later after a truck driver ploughed through a crowd at a 14 July fireworks display in Nice, killing 84 people. The attack was later claimed by the Islamic State group.
