July 4th live updates as celebrations across the USA mark America‘s 250th birthday

Historic celebrations are taking place across the United States this Fourth of July as Americans mark 250 years of independence.

Washington, D.C‘s Independence Day parade was canceled due to the extreme heat, but the capital will still host military flyovers, remarks by President Trump and a fireworks show billed as the largest in history.

Presidents use state visits as an occasion to showcase the best of American culture — and, in this case, perhaps, subtly highlight the resilience of a people who, 250 years ago, rose up and wrested themselves from a king’s control.

The shooting over the weekend at the White House correspondents’ dinner has featured the darker side of the United States at a time when Mr. Trump is supposed to be showcasing America’s 250th birthday for the British royalty. For a moment over the weekend, it was unclear if King Charles would travel to Washington at all, before he reassessed and ultimately committed to his plans for a four-day visit to Washington, New York and Virginia.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.–Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government.

Trump blames teleprompter for statement that Revolutionary War army ‘took over the airports’

“Actually right in the middle of that sentence, it went out,” Trump said when asked about the comment. “And that’s not a good feeling, when you’re standing in front of millions and millions of people on television.”

Trump’s speech was part of his July 4th “Salute to America,” which critics blasted as an attempt to politicize a nonpartisan holiday.
