UN Rapporteur Francesca Albanese on Germany’s Role in Gaza Genocide – and Repression of Dissent

May 18, 2025 #Gaza #FrancescaAlbanese #Germany
Why were three of Francesca Albanese’s lectures canceled in Germany — including at LMU Munich and FU Berlin? In this exclusive interview, the UN Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories speaks out about increasing censorship in Germany, her work documenting what she calls Israel’s genocide in Gaza, and Germany’s complicity.

Albanese also discusses how the crackdown on dissent in Germany is tied to the country’s unwillingness to confront both its past and present.

‘Israel burned the ground under our feet’: Hundreds killed in intensified Gaza assault

(May 16, 2025)

Mahmoud Muqbil, 38, lost at least 15 family members after their homes in Jabalia refugee camp were bombed on Thursday night. Ten were buried, and five remain under the rubble. “The Israeli army has intensified its targeting of hospitals and residential buildings to an extreme degree,” he told +972. “It is terrifying. I’ve been trying to calm my children from the sounds of explosions and airstrikes. The noise they make is indescribable.”

As Muqbil and his family mourned their relatives, his neighbor’s home was also struck in an overnight attack. “The Al-Ghandour family’s home, just two houses away from ours, was also targeted. We heard their screams and cries for help but couldn’t save anyone because the army was targeting anyone who moved in the area,” he recalled.

On Friday evening, the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor said in a statement that its field team documented the killing of over 115 Palestinians in northern Gaza alone in under 12 hours. The strikes, it said, hit at least 10 homes in Tel Al-Zaatar in Jabalia and Al-Salateen neighborhood in Beit Lahia, “destroying them entirely while the residents were inside, killing dozens of civilians, including women and children, in massacres that reflect the intensifying pattern of systematic mass killing against Palestinian civilians.”

Anti-Government Protesters Were Attacked by Fascists Around Israel

Fascist assailants physically attacked Saturday evening, May 17, anti-government protesters demanding the end of the war in Gaza and a hostage deal during demonstrations in Tel-Aviv, Jerusalem, Rehovot, Kiryat Ono and Gomeh Junction in Upper Galilee.

In Tel-Aviv, a gang of Kahanists attacked former Hadash MK Dov Khenin, a leading member of the Communist Party of Israel, and his wife on their way to the anti-war protest at Begin Road in front of the Israeli army headquarters. In the central city of Rehovot the attackers yell, “King Bibi,” referring to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, while other rips an Israeli flag carried by one of the protesters.

Following the assaults on former MK Khenin in Tel-Aviv and anti-government protesters in Rehovot by supporters of Netanyahu, a second group of protesters in Kiryat Ono were assaulted while taking part in a demonstration outside an event featuring Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar in the central town of Kiryat Ono. Videos posted by anti-government activists to social media appear to show a violent scuffle outside the event, as well as people identified as far-right government supporters clashing with police.

Nakba 77 Berlin – Escalation of Fascism

On May 15, Police without badge numbers escalated violence in Berlin Südstern making numerous dubious arrests detaining journalists and protesters.

The escalation of state sponsored repression in Berlin is a worrying sign of the fascist policies and measure being built to repress opposition in Germany.

Video: 100,000+ people wear red to protest at The Hague against Israel’s genocide

The march was timed to commemorate the 77th anniversary of the Nakba, the ‘catastrophe’, of 1948 in which more than 800,000 Palestinian civilians were driven by force from their homes and land, with many massacres and rapes, to create the state of Israel.

London sees historic turnout for Nakba anniversary and Gaza genocide protest

32,574 views May 18, 2025
In a powerful display of solidarity, an estimated half a million people filled the streets of central London to mark the 77th anniversary of the Nakba and protest Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza. The historic pro-Palestine demonstration called for urgent and decisive action from the UK government—including the immediate enforcement of a full arms embargo on Israel.
Reporting from the scene, Middle East Eye captured a wide range of voices, from Jewish protesters declaring “Not in our name,” to international allies like Greg Stoker, a former US Special Forces operative, who traced his solidarity with Palestine back to his military experience and disillusionment with U.S. foreign policy.

Exclusive: Any nuclear consortium must involve enrichment to happen in Iran

(May 17, 2025)

Reports claiming that the U.S. has asked Iran to cease uranium enrichment for a couple of years are also false, a second source said. „From the outset, the negotiating team tasked with discussing a potential new agreement with the United States has made it clear that a cessation of uranium enrichment is not an option, even temporarily.“ Iran also maintained this position throughout the diplomatic process that led to the signing of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2015, the source added.

Trump threatens Iran over nuclear offer Tehran calls ‘confusing’

(May 16, 2025)

Iran’s lead negotiator, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, said in a post on X later Friday that the country hasn’t received a written proposal.

“In the meantime, the messaging we — and the world — continue to receive is confusing and contradictory,” he wrote. Earlier, Araghchi had said, “What the parties to the negotiations say in the media is not the same as what they say behind closed doors.”

Araghchi also repeated his insistence that Iran retain some enrichment capacity, which has been a major sticking point. U.S. officials have given conflicting messages on the levels of uranium enrichment they would accept.
