Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 amid a descent into conflict and, despite having its own government and currency, had never been recognized by any nation in the world until Friday.
The African Union Chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, said any attempt to undermine Somalia’s sovereignty risks peace and stability on the continent.
Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as an independent country has triggered instant reaction from Türkiye and Saudi Arabia.
In a brief statement the Foreign Affairs Ministries of both countries issued hours after Israel became the first country to recognize the independence of Somaliland, they said the recognition is “unlawful.”
The sharp rebuke came a day after Israel became the first nation in the world to formally recognise Somaliland, triggering swift condemnation across African and Arab nations, and raising concerns about whether the move was part of an alleged Israeli plan to forcibly displace Palestinians.
Somaliland broke away from Somalia in 1991 following a brutal civil war but has never secured recognition from any United Nations member state. The self-declared republic has established its own currency, flag and parliament, though its eastern territories remain disputed.
It wasn‘t known why Israel made the declaration now or whether it was expecting something in return.
Earlier this year, U.S. and Israeli officials told The Associated Press that Israel had approached Somaliland about taking in Palestinians from Gaza as part of Donald Trump’s plan at the time to resettle that territory’s population.

Was ist nun das Problem? Die Bürokratie. Die BauNVO (Bau-Verordnung) muss noch überredet werden, damit Clubs da offiziell als „Kulturstätten“ drin stehen. Und das ist ultra-langsam. Bis 2025 ist das nicht durch.
Zwar würden seit der Corona-Pandemie wieder mehr Menschen feiern gehen, aber Energie, Mieten, Gagen und Löhne seien spürbar teurer geworden, sagt OKA-Geschäftsführer und Vorstand der Live Initiative Sachsen (LISA), Felix Buchta. „Die Situation der sächsischen Clubs und Livemusikspielstätten ist weiterhin extrem prekär und für viele existenzbedrohend“, sagt er.
„Viele Clubs arbeiten am Rande der Rentabilität und überleben seit der Corona-Pandemie nur mit massiven Anstrengungen, dank der Solidarität in der Szene und durch persönliche Ausbeutung“, erklärt Buchta.

Die Gründe könne man an einer Hand abzählen, sagt Demirkaya. Es seien die Nachwirkungen der Corona-Pandemie und die Kostenexplosionen, insbesondere im Energiebereich. „Unser Stammpublikum besteht aus Studierenden. Die verdienen wenig. Und die spüren die Inflation natürlich mit am stärksten“, sagt Demirkaya.
Pubs are disappearing. In Germany’s largest state, North Rhine-Westphalia, almost half of all pub owners have thrown in the towel in the last twenty years. In Brandenburg, eastern Germany, the government recently reported that in some districts more than 70 percent of pubs have closed their doors over the last decade. The much-lamented demise of pubs is the talk of the town in Germany and the world over.

Kyiv came under a mass combined missile and drone attack overnight on Dec. 27.
The attack started with Russia launching several Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, Iskander ballistic missiles, and a group of Kalibr cruise missiles at the capital shortly before 2 a.m. Kyiv time, monitoring channels reported.
