The Interview – ‘A Terrifying Line Is Being Crossed’: Mayor Jacob Frey on the Turmoil in Minneapolis

We’ve got 600 police officers. They have between 3,000 and 4,000 federal agents. They are saying, and I’m hopeful that they are being honest and candid, that those numbers will be significantly drawn down. They are saying that the way that ICE and Border Patrol have been conducting themselves will change dramatically. So not these marauding gangs of guys just walking down the street indiscriminately picking people up, but having more of a targeted operation. This is not about ICE doing regular ICE stuff. What we have seen feels like an invasion.

Trump strikes a positive tone on Tim Walz after phone call with the Minnesota governor

It marks a noticeable shift in the way the president has talked about Walz, whom he’s repeatedly criticized for his handling of a fraud scandal in Minnesota and blamed for unrest that has led to federal officers shooting and killing two people in recent weeks.

As recently as Saturday, after a federal agent’s fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, Trump accused Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, who is also a Democrat, of „inciting Insurrection, with their pompous, dangerous, and arrogant rhetoric“ and slammed them as „sanctimonious political fools.“

Walz and Frey both talk to President Trump today; Say positive conversations

Trump and Democratic Gov. Tim Walz spoke in a phone call and later offered comments that were a marked change from the critical statements they have exchanged in the past. Their conversation happened on the same day a federal judge heard arguments in a lawsuit aimed at halting the federal immigration enforcement surge in the state.

“We, actually, seemed to be on a similar wavelength,” the president wrote in a social media post.

Walz, in a statement, said the call was “productive” and that impartial investigations into the shootings were needed

Prosecutors Subpoena Minnesota Democrats as Part of Federal Inquiry

The subpoenas sought documents from Gov. Tim Walz, Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis and Mayor Kaohly Her of St. Paul related to their policies on immigration enforcement efforts in the state. Two Minnesota prosecutors, Keith Ellison, the state attorney general, and Mary Moriarty, the Hennepin County attorney, were also sent similar subpoenas.

Justice Department opens investigation into Minnesota governor and Minneapolis mayor

Walz, in a post on X, did not explicitly address the news reports, but said: „Two days ago it was Elissa Slotkin. Last week it was Jerome Powell. Before that, Mark Kelly. Weaponizing the justice system against your opponents is an authoritarian tactic. The only person not being investigated for the shooting of Renee Good is the federal agent who shot her.“

The killing of Renee Macklin Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer last week became a flashpoint for the simmering opposition to federal agents operating within the state.

The Killing of Renee Good: Minnesota Officials Fear Cover-Up After FBI Halts Cooperation with State Investigators

(January 9, 2025)

Local officials in Minnesota have denounced the FBI for preventing state authorities from being part of the investigation into Renee Good’s death. On Thursday, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said the FBI had blocked the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension from accessing case materials, scene evidence or investigative interviews. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey wrote online, “Let’s call a spade a spade: Kristi Noem watched the videos and doesn’t want an impartial investigation because she knows her narrative about domestic terrorism is bullshit.”

Videos show fatal ICE shooting in Minneapolis

Video shows the moment an ICE agent fatally shot a woman in Minneapolis on Jan. 7, 2026. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey calls the claim the shooting was self-defense „bullshit“ and is a „garbage narrative“ after seeing video of the shooting.

‘I’m Not For Abolishing The Entire Police Department’: Mayor Frey Speaks Out At Mpls. Protest

WCCO caught Mayor Frey afterwards and here’s what he had to say:

“If you’re asking whether I’m for massive structural reform to revise a structurally racist system the answer is ‘yes’. If you’re asking whether I will do everything possible to push back on the inherent inequities that are literally built into the architecture the answer is ‘yes’. If you’re asking whether I’m willing to do everything I possibly can throughout the rest of my term to make sure that the police union, the police contract, the arbitration system, and some of these policies that have resulted in problems for specifically Black and Brown people and murder over series of generations, I’m all for that. I’m not for abolishing the entire police department, I will be honest about that.”

If most people, particularly people of color, had done what a police officer did late Monday, they’d already be behind bars. That’s why today I’m calling on Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman to charge the arresting officer in this case.
