Seine Aufgabe: Allein aus Geräuschen die Position einer Schießerei ermitteln – und das mit hoher Effizienz, wie der Hersteller wirbt.

It’s called ShotSpotter, a large tracking system which detects gunfire and then triangulates the position of the sound. Acoustic sensors are placed in strategic areas, mostly along rooftops or atop telephone poles. Once installed, the sensors pick up street noise and listen for gunshots.

In 2012 machten die U.S.-Behörden über die „New York Times“ öffentlich, dass ein solches Netzwerk von Mikrofonen bereits zum damaligen Zeitpunkt in fast 70 Städten installiert und im operativen Einsatz war. Staatliche Ausreden: Gefahrenabwehr für die Stadtbewohner wahlweise vor sich selbst oder Außerirdischen („Aliens“), zur Erfassung von Schusswaffengebrauch („ShotSpotter“), Aufklärung von Verbrechen, etc., etc. Seit geraumer Zeit wird dieser Einsatz stadtweiter akustischer Überwachung für Deutschland propagiert. Erfahrungsgemäß heisst das: es wird bereits eingesetzt.

(10.12.2012) Transit authorities in cities across the country are quietly installing microphone-enabled surveillance systems on public buses that would give them the ability to record and store private conversations, according to documents obtained by a news outlet.
The systems are being installed in San Francisco, Baltimore, and other cities with funding from the Department of Homeland Security in some cases, according to the Daily, which obtained copies of contracts, procurement requests, specs and other documents.
