The summit will also be attended by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, and European Council President António Costa.
The summit is part of the plan announced on September 29th by U.S. President Donald Trump to end the war in the Gaza Strip and achieve lasting peace in the Middle East.
„I welcome President (Trump‘s) plan to end the war in Gaza and I am encouraged by Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu‘s positive response,“ Costa said on X.
„The situation in Gaza is intolerable. Hostilities must end, and all hostages must be released immediately,“ he added.
„The European Union is ready to work with all our European partners and other allies on a peace plan to Ukraine that will ensure a just and lasting peace for the Ukrainian people. We must learn from the past. We cannot repeat the Minsk experience. We cannot repeat the Afghanistan tragedy. And for that, we need strong security guarantees. Peacemaking goes hand in hand with peacekeeping,“ the President of the European Council said.

In der ablaufenden Legislaturperiode war der 58 Jahre alte gelernte Jurist ohne formelle Koalitionsbildung vom marxistischen Linksblock (BE) und dem grün-kommunistischen Bündnis CDU unterstützt worden. Vor der Abstimmung habe es aber „keine Kontakte mit anderen Parteien“ über die Bildung der künftigen Regierung gegeben, versicherte Costa am Sonntag vor Journalisten.
