Israeli Doctors and Health Professionals to Join General Strike to Protest Judicial Overhaul

In a statement, the healthcare professionals‘ civil organizations said: „Israeli democracy is under brutal attack and we must not stand by. The dangerous changes promoted by the government will fatally harm the physical and mental health of the public, and healthcare in Israel. This is a matter of saving lives, and we do it out of commitment to our patients, and for the future of Israel.“

On Tuesday, protest leaders called for a shutdown of Israel’s economy next Monday in response to the far-right government’s plan to overhaul Israel’s legal system.

Hazan, a senior lecturer and an expert on macroeconomics and growth at Tel Aviv University, was a member of the bank’s six-person monetary committee which is tasked with setting the interest rate every six weeks. A replacement for him will be sought.

In Hazan’s letter of resignation, he cited his intent to “become involved in the sociopolitical sphere.”

In Battle Against Judicial Overhaul, Protest Leaders Call for Shutdown of Israeli Economy

The leaders added that they will stage a protest in front of the Knesset in Jerusalem at the same time the government is slated to bring parts of the plan to weaken the judicial system before the Knesset for a first vote.

„The plan to swiftly pass the laws of the dictatorship will face the people of Israel, more determined than ever to maintain their independence,“ the organizers said in a statement.
